I've posted before about the pain around the collar bone in the chest area...the research I've done concerning the sternocleidomastoid muscle basically tells that this muscle can refer pain to the ears, among other places but doesn't really say that it can be painful around the collar bone or chest itself. Anyone else have this pain quite frequently? What do you do to relieve it?
Thanks, jladams

jladams,
I don't know how to make it go away, but I also have pain there. I sometimes ice it, it feels good, but the pain still comes back after ice.

Hi jladams,

The sternocleidomastoid (this is kinda rough) attaches up around your ears, goes down the side of your neck, attaches to the clavicle or collar bone and then to the sternum. If you do a search on it, the picture is worth a thousand words. It's a very large muscle and when it gets tight or spasms, can cause major problems. It can make your ears hurt, make you have that pushing or choking feeling in your throat, make your entire collar bone and surrounding area sore and can make you have chest & back pain. (Again, seeing everything this muscle attaches to, will help you understand the misery it can cause.)

I've had problems several times and massage therapy has worked the best for me. Mild stretches can sometimes help.

Take Care,

Cymy Sue

I HAVE PAINS ON MY COLLAR BONE AS WELL. IT SEEMS TO TARVEL INTO MY LEFT EAR AS WELL. IT IS A SHARP PAIN IN MY EAR. TO RELEAVE THE PAIN IS TO GENTLY MASSAGE UPWARD AND IN A CIRCULAR MOITION TOWARDS THE HEART AND TAKE 3 DEEP BREATHS. ALSO I HEARD POOL THERAPY IS VERY GOOD FOR CHEST PAIN. AS FOR THE EAR I STILL CANNOT FIND OUT WHY IS HURTS. HANG IN THERE.

Oh yes, that is what I'm suffering with majorly today. Can't wait to get home to my jacuzzi. You can try to massage the muscle yourself - it's a little painful, but my massage therapist suggests it.

I don't know if costocondritis is related to the SCM or not, but that is most likely what the pain in your chest/collarbone is as well.

Hi all,
Here is a clip describing trigger points int he scm muscle... as Sue said though... do a search because the picture is very helpful in understanding the anatomy of this muscle. I have big issues with the scm. My problems here began after a spinal leak (from a myelogram). Seems one thing led to another and triggered the whole tmjd thing as well. These muscles can be injected (I've done this)...or trigger point massage may help disove the trigger points some.
I can grab my scm by turning my head to the opposite side and looking up slightly - then squeezing the muscle between my thumb and index finger. It's not a pleasant muscle to massage...but this may bring some relief. Best to you, Robyn

Sternocleidomastoid Muscle

The sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) is a large muscle on either side of the neck. It attaches to the sternum, the clavicle (collar bone), and the mastoid process of the temporal bone of the skull, right behind the ear. This very important muscle often develops trigger points (with or without a TMJ problem) and frequently causes forehead headaches, which are often misdiagnosed as frontal sinus headaches. Also, trigger points in the SCM may cause pain in the ear, over and around the eye, the chin, and below the eye (which may cause a misdiagnosis of maxillary sinusitis).
