I've never done this sort of thing before and I forgot to ask if TMJ is a type of eating disorder. My niece is Kim and I don't know if I should call her mother. If she is anorexic I think I must call her about her daughter. Does anyone here have any experience with TMJ and anorexia?

Hi Susan, I love the fact that you are so concerned about Kim. I can tell you really care for her. TMJ is not an eating disorder, but it an make it difficult to eat things. I mentioned some things you can do to help her in your other post "Hi".

I am grateful for you help Heather. I just sent in an answer to you on my other question. You seem to know alot about this problem. Do you have trouble keeping your weight up? Kim is so thin and she looks very good in the clothes young people wear but I think she's too thin. Do you have this sort of problem too? What kind of doctor do you see?

Thanks very much for your help. Kim is home now and we're going to talk after dinner. If she wants, I'll suggest she write to all of you. I hope she eats better tonight than she usually does. I have chicken soup, bread, and salad for dinner.

On Healthboards.com there is a section for eating disorders. I think it would be great for her to go there. I actually wrote something last night. For years I was anorexic and bolimic, so she might seek help there, but best bet is a therapist.

thank you shelly for directing me to the group discussing eating disorders. I want to talk to my niece about this because it's really very possible that she is chosing not to eat. her friends are so thin and some of them smoke. do you think smoking is the key to all of this?

i work in an office and my time at the computer is limited. tomorrow when i go to work i'll try to get online to read this group's messages. my job is pretty much on my own time but i have to get my work done before taking time to get on the net.

when i talked to kim at dinner i asked her about her tmj and who told her that she had it. she said no one really told her except that some friends of hers had some bite plates and they had the same problems as her. all of them had trouble eating and when i asked her if she though she might have an eating disorder she got very upset with me. she said she would eat more if it didn't cause her so much pain to eat.

i really felt terrible because the chicken soup was more or less okay but she said the salad was too hard for her and the french bread was too tough. so i don't think she has a disorder of eating because she's so upset my it all. i think something else is her problem .

this dentist on her health plan might be the best idea. i can't force her to do anything because she's over 18. if she were younger i could take her to my children's pediatrician.

i'll try to look in tomorrow while i'm at my desk at work. thanks to anyone for your ideas.

Hi Susan:
TMJ is not an eating disorder. I have in the past suffered with anorexia. That was in years before my TMJ was as bad as it is now. TMJ can make it extremely difficult to eat. But I must admit when I was really anorexic I would use any excuse to not eat. I would even make up excuses or out and out lie. Eating disorders are mighty powerful things. The best of luck you in helping your niece.

Just to clarify - TMJD means "Temporo Mandibular Joint Disorder".
The temporomandibular joint is where your lower jaw connects to your upper jaw. TMJD is like having a stone in your shoe. The pain is not limited to the joint, it can affect many aspects of ones life.

This last month, because I have been in so much pain and could not eat, I've lost 7 lbs. No I don't think Kim has an eating disorder. Soup, I too can eat, but no way can I eat salads, or hard bread.
I think her seeing her dentist would be a great thing to do.
