How severe are they?

I have developed a sensitivity to noise which has all but diminished my social life. I can't go to the pool hall on the weekends with friends, because the music is to loud. I can't go to Karokee with friends from work every week like I used to... it's to loud.

I have tinittus that only bothers me when it's silent. I HATE silence. I always have something on, and I have always feel asleep with music on, so no real lifestyle change there. I fear tinuttis that rings LOUD and I am aware of all day.. that is my worst fear, besides deafness itself.

I don't even know if I have TMJ yet. I will know soon I hope, as I am a prime candidate and I have a lot of it's symptoms.

At least if I have TMJ, I know from the quality of people on this site that I am in good company!

My ear sensitivity was better when I started wearing earplugs. I would wear Mack's earplugs, they are made of silicon. With these types I had the ability to form them to my ears. The earplugs help to filter out the harsher noises. I would walk around like I was a stereo without its cover on. Since I have been going to pt my ears have gotton way better. I am now almost all the way out of my earplugs which I find to be a miracle since I have been wearing them everyday for years. I still can't go to the movies without them, but I feel lucky that I can even go ( I was not able to before). Since I got tmj from a theme park I am not so quick to go back, so I can't tell you about those. I have been trying knew places now without earplugs but I do still bring a pair, just in case. Some places are still really loud even when I wore earplugs. When do you find out legally if you have tmj? I had ear tests done and they only told me that I HAVE REALLY SENSITVE HEARING,(that was the whole reason why I had the test done). When my ears began to be really sensitive it concerned me because before I did not have that great of hearing. Even when I was really little I had tubes in my ears because I could not hear motor sounds. I just recently quit my job, but at the school the kids could not pull anything past me because I heard it all. Sometimes I just had to let them slide, so they could be kids. My ear problems have always been the one symptom that no one could ever figure out...until now.

I have an appointment on May 1st with a TMJ doctor.

Yes, I am in the same boat. I had tubes as well when I was a kid. My hearing was "ok", but since I had my braces (i can't remember being this way before) my voice seemed to be louder when I talked. I'd get weird pulsating in my ears when I finish talking. Silence is now this roaring head noise.. but I am good at "controlling it". I have ALL ear symptoms, but now I am getting other things to. Jaw pains, temple pains, pressure headaches etc etc.. all stuff I can say with confidence I didn't have much off before my braces 4 years ago.

My hearing test was fine. My ears are sensitive to noise, I cringe when I hear certain noises. Did you know that ear plugs are only to be used in environments that "everyone" would have ear damage from (ie: Concert, LOUD movie theater etc). If you block your ears from re-adjusting to sounds, it can make your sensitivity worse. If you want more information about that, let me know and I will post a link for you.

I went to my doctor because it all started as this weird feeling in my right ear, that I chalked up to ear damage from 2 concerts I went to back to back... but now I am not so sure because of all the other symptoms I have.

Also, it's getting worse. When damage is done, it's usually done. My ears however are better some days, full the next day, popping the next day, sensitive sometimes and fine some other times. I have a whole bunch of EAR symptoms, but the ENT I saw told me I have ETD and the spray would fix it. Spray made me feel worse. Ok, good.. I have ETD. Now, I wanna know WHY.. and I think TMJD has a good chance of being the culprit.

I just seem to fit a bunch of the criteria, so better safe then sorry. I also see ANOTHER ENT/Octologist in June. She's supposed to be one of the best in our area.

I would love the info on ear sensitivity and earplugs.
I am no doctor but it sounds like tmj to me. Do you also get headaches?

hey,

Here is a disussion on the Hyperausis site (sound sensitivity). It's scary to read what some of these people go through.

Also, check out the "Supplement" (newsletter) and other information on the site.

Hey twiztid,

You sound alot like my son. He says that the tinnitus is driving him crazy. He's never been sensitive to noise before, until now. He used to listen to his stereo (like most teenagers do) fairly loud, and now he never has it on. Bothers him when the dogs bark, even to go to a movie theater! As for the headaches, they're constant too. He explains it like his head is in a vice. I'm not a doc, but it sounds like you have tmj. Oddly enough, you both had braces. He only had his on for 9 months and this all started, so I had them rip them off! Anything helping you? Once you get an actual diagnosis, you'll have a better idea of which way to turn.

Cheryl,

As far as the "head noise", I only get it when it's silent. To me, I have fun with it sometimes. I concentrate on the sound, and it goes REAL loud. I see how loud I can make it sometimes. Then, if I want it to "turn down" I just create some kind of noise, or stop focusing on it.

I have also started sleeping to some "relaxation cd's" with sounds of ocean waves and stuff. I have always slept to music or my computer fan is loud enough that I don't hear the head noise. The ocean waves don't help my symptoms, but it's a very soothing way to sleep. This CD I have has a whole bunch of sounds and music that triggers things in your head long after you've slept that induces a better sleep. I was skeptical, but I have been waking up refreshed since using it this past week.

I find that the more I stay away from sound, the better I am. If I am in the car, I can have the stereo turned up abit when I have the windows down. I think the car bugs my ears because of the pressure, it's either that or the noise of the wind helps take the toll of the music off my ears.. not sure.

I have slowly been avoiding situations. It sucks, because I am a very social and active person and now I am scared to go out anywhere in fear of damaging my ears further (if I have ear damage)

If I find out I have TMJ, I am going for the splint therapy and will be "re-training" my ears slowly to handle louder noises. I will then make some big lifestyle changes.. if I EVER go to a concert again, it's ear plugs in my ears. Clubs, I will also wear the flesh coloured plugs if it's to loud. I don't care what people think.. 40 years from now, I want to be able to hear.

I used to be afraid of "losing my hearing".. but I have since learned that there is worse. Ringing in your ears, over sensitivty to noise... sometimes, I think it'd just be easier to be deaf. It ain't that easy, even some deaf people still hear the ringing!

It's scary stuff.

BEST of luck to you and your son!

I will keep everyone posted when I know more about my situation. If this TMJ doc says I don't have TMJ, I will get a 2nd opinion to make sure.

I am taking all the steps I can, and until I know what's going on.. I am avoiding situations that will worsen my mystery illness.

twiztid,

I'm going to mention to my son about you using relaxation tapes; waves and so forth. Some nights he leaves his computer on, too, for some noise to tone down the ringing he gets. Good luck to you and keep us posted.

Cheryl,

Different sounds help different people. "White noise" is all that has helped me to sleep the last couple of years. I've had a "Jet-Roar" type noise and the white noise drowns it out.

My Tinnitus, as with many here is TMJD related and is much better with the "Splint Therapy". I just thought I would let You, Mike, & all know, it can go away if you can get help with the TMJD.

Take Care,

Cymy Sue

Cymy Sue,

Thanks for responding. Things are sort of at a stand still right now until test results come back and I see his current tmjd doc on wednesday. I agree that once we get with the right splint,(and the right doc) that could help his tinnitus. At this point, I was only looking for short term "help" to try to get his mind off of it. As soon as it all comes back, there are a few ideas I'd like your advice on, as well as others on this board. Unfortunately, I'm not one to believe that this problem is going to carry a "next day cure". It will take time. I did read old posts of yours, and you described the jet engine noise-sounds awful! He said that just the ringing is sometimes maddening. Talk to you soon.

Cheryl

I'd call your dentist and get your Daughter to a TMJ Specialist.

Most doctor's try to treat the "refered pain" instead of the root of the problem.

My doctor never even mentioned TMJ to me. I had to bring it up, which insulted his intelligence. He told me that people with TMJ have "clicking jaws"

3 mins on the Internet, and anyone would know that his statement is false. Maybe he's right and I don't have TMJ... but persue it until you are satisfied.

I do not have TMJ. Noise like fridge fans car fans overhead balast lights. I need total silence. Unplug my fridge. Turn off floresent lights. Much better for me.

I have had tinuttis for over 6 or 7 months now ever since I started singing with a band, previous to that I never noticed if I had tinuttis or not (although I have been singing for at least 15 years), it seems though to have started after rehearsals with the band. I asked them to play lower they did, and then I got myself earplugs (the specially molded kind) and I use them when we'd perform. They were quite helpful and everything seemed to be going ok. However when I watched another band a week ago, which was extremely loud (even with the ear plugs) the tinuttis started up again and it seems worse. It feels like its gonna upa notch. Im also recovering from a cold so Im not sure if its also that which is affceting me. I am totally frustrated and considering quitting the band I am with because I feel like the tinuttis is only going to get worse if I expose myself to louder than usual sounds. Also I sometimes wear the earplugs to sleep because our airconditioner makes a noise which can be irritating, is this bad? I read somewhere that wearing plugs when unnecessary is bad.. Im going to have my ears checked , but I just want to know if anyone has had a similar situation? Its very frustrating:confused:

teresaac- I have the same symptoms as your daughter. Right tight neck and R. facial spasms, pretty constant. My joints don't click either. I am being treated for tmj for what they call muscular tmj, seen a neruo surgeon for my neck but he didn't see a need for surgery.

I have yet to find an answer. PT didn't help, ultrasound short lived, and bi weekly osteopath treatments are getting it either. I wonder sometimes about botox.

Has your daughter had an injury to her neck or anything? My symptoms are mainly on the right side.

I just want to say that its gotten better. After a week of duxaril, 2x a day, I feel Im returning back to normal thank God. I have a terrific doctor, Dr Agcaoili, and he says I need to not expose myself to loud music for about 2 weeks at least , after all it did take time exposing myself, so I also need time to get myself back to normal. I cary around ear plugs, which helps me a lot. I still have sensitivity to certain frequencies but he says that will improve also over time. I suggest anyone who is suffering from tinittus to seek help and to protect yourself now. It was a crazy feeling last week I wouldnt wish on anyone
