Does anyone know why they say wisdom teeth extractions cause tmj? I thought maybe it was because you are asleep
and they are stretching the jaw?
and they are stretching the jaw?

I had my uppers out in February....
I got TMD as a result..
BUT, see it's one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't...if you NEED your wisdom teeth out (like mine, they were pushing my other teeth out in the front, plus they were hurting my entire mouth), you just HAVE to....
it's a risk, but then again you may be one of the normal people and get thru it fine...

scotianprincess,
I hear ya...my son had his braces taken off early due to tmj problems...now, his wisdom teeth are going to have to eventually be removed...and I'm afraid! Don't need any more problems. I plan on waiting until they're giving him grief...but what to do if he's still in pain due to tmj, and they have to come out, due to pain from them?! It sometimes seems to be a never ending struggle.

Last year when I start going to the first doctor who said I had TMJ, he took out my wisdom top teeth because he thought that with my clenching I bashing against them. It didn't seem to make it better or worse. I had this done before I had found this site, I'm not sure if I would have it done if the same thing were to happen today. Although I do know that my gums near where they were aren't as sore now as they were before.
I am unsure what to do, since I was advised by my son's orthodontist to have his removed. They aren't bothering him now, but he said they could cause problems later. It is especially confusing because my new tmj doctor, has mentioned that a lot of jaw problems are caused by braces. What if having his wisdom teeth removed cause him to have tmj too. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.
Let me know what anyone else thinks
thanks

Hi there Cheryl,
Do you know for sure he will need his wisdom teeth out? I have three impacted wisdom teeth and one that came through partially weirdly late in life for wisdom teeth, at 28. They have never given me any problems even though noises were made about how I might need them out, or how they might move my other teeth around. I don't know if your son's wisdom teeth are actually coming through, or if they are already causing any pain, but if not, that's why I'm asking. I think wisdom teeth removal is over suggested by dentists. They may never give him any trouble at all.

hbep,
I agree with you 100%. Dentists have told me over the years that I needed to get mine out, before they'd cause me a lot of trouble. I felt that unless I'm in pain, they're staying! All these years later, they're still in my mouth. I intend to do the same with him, unless they absolutely have to be removed due to pain, they're staying. I do think that they're unneccessarily removed quite often. His aren't causing him pain, and aren't coming through yet. So, unless they do give him grief, he's keeping them!!

hbep,
1 more thing-you'll like this. In the middle of this tmjd mess, his dentist wanted him to go to an oral surgeon to have them removed now!!!! I'm sure you know that I said, NO WAY!!!! Are they nuts?
