HI
I am going for my second appointment to the OS tmj specialist WHO DOES NOT BELIEVE IN JAW SURGERY tomorrow. I am looking forward to seeing him. He rushed through the appliance to go on my lower jaw. That is all that I really know. And he is going to preform this computerized test that will measure how much my jaw deviates and will tell us if braces have any chance of helping my deformed jaw. I wish I knew more. It seemed like last Thursday the facts were flying too fast for me to comprehend it all. I am not sure if my mind is playing tricks on me or if it is just coincidence but I have had a very bad week with pain. My jaw cracking hurts so badly at the first real pop that I find myself not going beyond that point even when it is not locked up. Wish me luck, will keep you posted. Oh, and does anyone know if this new appliance will have me uncomfortable for a few days? I have a funeral out of town among other things this weekend.

Mary,
I'm not sure if you'll get this before you leave or not. I was only slightly uncomfortable when I first got my splint. And it was because it was rubbing funny againt my gums. I just stopped using it and went in for an adjustment the next week. I did notice that after some adjustments I would be sore for about 3 or 4 days, but the more I wore it the sooner it didn't hurt.
I also wanted to tell I'm glad you liked the doctor. I hope all went well today with the testing. Kinda a strange feeling huh? I'm getting ready to leave work, so let me know everything went next week.

Hi!
I am wearing this new splint. It seems a bit big and bulky right now. It fits on my lower jaw and puts my jaw into the position it needs to be in. This position is nothing like the position I am used to. The Dr. (by the way, his name is D. Gary Wolford in St. Clair Shores MI, suggested by Sue) said that my jaw is off so much that he is going to have to do this gradually. His course of action for me is for me to get braces to try to align my jaw better. He is sending me to a dentist who has studied the mechanics of the jaw more than mose Orthodontists have. He told me that he is not sure if I will be able to recapture the disks through this or not. But he wants me to give this plan a try to hopefully avoid serious surgery which would include cutting the upper jaw and lenghthening it. (OUCH) He did say that there is a good chance I will need the disks surgically placed back if nothing else works first, but that he wants to try these things for a few years. Sue, I feel like you reccommending him to me was an answer to many prayers of mine! Thanks so much! I hope you are finding some relief too!
Wow, was that tens machine weird or what???

I just got my bite splint a few weeks ago. I don't think it's working that great at all and I've had to take it out alot. I read that they help a good percentage of people with tmj but my jaw needed to come forward also. I read about this double block bite splint that fits on the top teeth and the bottom and never needs adjusting. My other doctor was supposed to use that type but I decided to go with this guy so we'll see.
I'm going to do the same thing use the splint to get my jaw dropped somewhat (hopefully) then I'm getting these braces using Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics. The last set I had didn't move my teeth enough and I was told regualar braces generally only tip the teeth. With this a peridontist loosens your gums and then they're off in 10 months, expanded to the borders of ur pallette. The doctor Im seeing Dr. Wilco came up with the procedure but there are doctors all around the country who perform his technique. I'm thinking about starting soon whether this splint helps or not. He makes the RSI device too so I'm considering that. Take care everyone.

Give the splint at least 4-6 weeks before you feel it's not working. Mine took at least 4 to start (I was only wearing at night when it was supposed to be 24/7). The ringing in my ears stopped but it took much longer for the spasms to stop. My spasms are usually under control unless I'm stressed out. Last weekend when I tried the MRI I completly went into spasms. Just give it time and think positive, it WILL work. Good Luck, Jill
