Hi Guys:
Have any of you guys ever gotten a metal taste in your mouth? I have this on and off. It's just awful. Have any of you ever had this happen?

Yes...I have this, too!! (I've never seen this mentioned before) It's driven me crazy this past year. I've eliminated all aluminum cans, (thinking that was the cause) and it still hasn't helped. It's off and on, though. Wow, someone else has this, all this time, I thought I was 'lacking' something!!! Is there a connection???

Hi Tiffany and Cheryl,
I bumped up that old post "A World...." This symtom is listed, but does not give an explanation. I have seen it on lists of symtoms elsewhere, but again, no explanation as to why. Many people have this symtom.
Hope you're both OK,
Cymy Sue

hi guys
i get that metal taste in my mouth too but i think mine is from my crowns. my front teeth were redone about 1.5 years ago and thats when the "penny" taste started. just curious to see if any of you have dental work that could be causing this.

Cheryl, Cymy Sue, Anastasia:
I had no idea that so many of my fellow TMJ sufferers also had this problem with a metallic taste in their mouth. As Anastasia mentioned I thought perhaps it was my crowns but if I cover my crowns and touch the inside of my jaw with my tongue I can still taste it. But I do agree that where I have gold crowns the metallic taste is worse. Cheryl, this metallic taste I have is like yours...it comes and goes but honey when it's here it can drive a person mad. Do you feel that way too when you have it really bad? This board is just so great because if I didn't have this place where I could come and discuss stuff like this I would think I was just crazy. You know, sometimes with all these odd symptoms I begin to think I'm just a hypochondriac(sp). I think because there are just so many different types of symptoms I start thinking it's just in my head. Isn't it amazing all the symptoms that are attached to TMJ? Today the metallic taste is a bit better than yesterday. It usually hangs around for a day or two when I get it but those couple of days are miserable ones.

Some people with a mouth full of dental amalgams can experience a metal taste. These amalgams contain about 50 percent mercury, and the rest of the amalgam contains silver, tin, copper, zinc and maybe a few other metals as well. I've read that the mercury and silver (and possibly others too) continually leak and are deposited throughout your body. They are stored there for a very long time (particularly the mercury).
I have an interest in it, since I've been cured of my fibromyalgia problems (for the most part), after my amalgams were replaced with less toxic ones, nearly 10 years ago. That's the case where I've heard of people having a metal taste in their mouth. I seem to recall having some metal taste too, when my tongue touched the gray-black filling.
For me, it wasn't real bad (the metal taste that is....), but it often depends on how many amalgams a person has and the type. High copper amalgams will leak much more mercury then low copper ones. If a person has both gold and mercury fillings (called "silver" fillings by dentists), then by galvanic action, the metals can be encouraged to leak even faster. People who chew gum or grind their teeth are even more susceptible by an extremely large margin.
If you don't have these mercury fillings in your mouth, then you would have to look for other sources that possibly are causing you to have this sensation of tasting metal in your mouth - such as crowns or braces etc.

Hi Tiffany,
Yes, you're right, when I have those 'metallic' days, it drives me nuts. No matter what I eat, I can't seem to get it to go away. After eating, it's almost like I was chewing on aluminum cans or silverware! I don't have any crowns or fillings, so I know that it's not related to any dental work. It does seem like TMJD does have a large assortment of symptoms. When I've gotten weird symptoms, such as this, I usually don't tell my Doctor, he'd probably think that I'm nuts!!!! (there's just too many!) I hope you're having a better day.
Take Care,
Cheryl
Cymy Sue-Thanks for bumping up that post. I did read that post in the past, and never thought of the metallic taste, until Tiffany brought it up. Hope all is well with you.

Considering that a 'metallic' taste in one's mouth is also a symptom of gingivitis (a common gum disease), perhaps the TMJ metal taste is somehow related to how TMJ affects the gums or teeth...just a guess

Another possible cause is that the medial pterygoid muscle entraps a portion of the lingual nerve causing an extremely bitter metallic taste in the mouth.
