Hi Everybody,
I have a question for those of you that have ringing in the ears from tmjd. First of all...I have ringing in the ears also... but I don't know if it is caused by my tmjd or from my nerve deafness from birth ( 60% right/stone deaf left). I understand that some people with hearing loss do have tinnitus...anyway...what I need to know from any of you that have ringing in the ears from tmjd is how often do you hear it or what does it sound like in your ears? I am trying to determined what causes my ringing....so any feedback would be really appreciated...thanks.
Sandi

Sandi,
My Son has complained about having tinnitus since this all began. His is constant, and he explains the sound as a high-pitched noise, or whine.
Take Care,
Cheryl

Same here. I am still not sure whether it is from TMJ or nerves. It started after dental work. It is difficult to determine the exact cause if you also have hearing loss. You many need to treat TMJ by a very qualified doctor if your TMJ symptoms are bad, and then hope the tennitus decreases with treatment. Alex

Hi Sandi,
Mine is/was somewhat Like Ana's. Mine started about 3 years ago, about 22 years after being diagnosed with TMJD. It was like a Jet Roar, "CONSTANTLY". Mine was totally TMJ muscle related. I have no nerve damage to my ears. Sometimes, nerve damage is the cause.
Splint Therapy has helped tremedously and I only have a slight hissing every few days, now.
I had no luck with regular ENT's (5 total) with this. They don't make the connection. A Neurotologist made the diagnosis and told me it was entirely related to the TMJ problem.
The year prior to knowing what was causing my "T", I did try Dr. Jastreboff's TRT Program and it did help me deal with the noise.
If TMJ muscle problems are contributing to or causing the ringing, Splints and other therapies that relax the muscles will help.
Take Care,
Cymy Sue

To everybody that responded...thanks alot. The information that I am getting from all of you is that your ringing/noise seems to be CONSTANT all the time...whereas in my case my ringing is NOT CONSTANT. I had it sometime after my whiplash...but I can't be positive... I don't seem to remember if I had it since childhood because of my nerve deafness...I really don't know. But I do know that sometime years later after the whiplash I noticed the ringing or I was more aware of it...it would come and go, only on some occasions...last maybe 10 to 15 secs at the most with a high pitched ringing. I had always thought at the time it must be part of the nerve deafness and I knew then that most people who have hearing loss would have ringing in the ears. I had it for years...still had it after my full blown tmjd...but the ringing remained the same...no change. Even after wearing my splint for 10 years there was no change in it. My ringing has never been constant...just comes once in awhile...like maybe 3 times a month. That's why I ask you guys how often you have it. So, I am thinking that maybe my ringing has nothing to do with my tmjd but with my nerve deafness...because my seems different from the rest of you. But if my ringing is caused by the tmjd...wouldn't you think that it would be gone by now with splint therapy for 10 years?
Anybody have any thoughts on this...what do you think?

Thanks everybody,.....oh, sorry for the second post...computer very very slow...
The information you guys have given me has made me think that maybe my ringing in the ears may not be related to tmjd but to my nerve deafness. I don't want to get in alot of details why I think that...but what I did noticed from all of you is that your ringing/noise is a CONSTANT noise. In my case I had it for years after my whiplash, maybe had it since childhood...don't really know...had it after my full blown tmjd with no change it in...it remained the same. I have it maybe 3 or 4 times a month with a high pitched ringing that last about 10 to 15 secs at the most...but it is not CONSTANT. That's why I am wondering if my ringing is related to my nerve deafness rather than my tmjd. So, I have one more question to ask from you guys...If my ringing is caused by my tmjd and I have been in splint therapy for years...wouldn't you think that the ringing would have stopped a long time ago with the splint?
Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Anastasia,
You said your noise is not constant? Is it a ringing noise....how often do you have it...and how long does it last when you have it? Are you on splint therapy wait now?

hi Sandi
oddly enough, when the weather is nice my tennitus goes up. mainly that roaring noise. the only constant thing i have is like some one shoved cottonballs in both my ears. it's not effecting my hearing in any real way, but everything sounds a little muffled. All of my ear tests have come back okay.
the loud screaming noise has gone down since i got my NTI about 3 weeks ago, actually it was 3 weeks today. :) it can hit me at any time and usualy only lasts for about 10-30 minutes then it calms down a little to the point where i can ignore it. for some reason it's the worst when i try to go to bed. i think it migh be because i'm relaxing and the muscles in my ears arn't ready to relax. or maybe because i put my head down. who knows. what about you? is there any way ot determine if your ringing is from your hearing loss or not? anyhoo, hope this has helped a bit.

one more thing too. my chiropractor noticed that my C1 vert. has shifted to the left. its the vert. right by your jaw just under your ears. that could also be causing my tenn. i'll let you know what my chiro says about that when i see him next.

Anastasia,
Thanks again. I am glad to hear that your screaming in ears is going down abit since wearing your NTI. It must be stressful to hear all that stuff in your ears. I had read somewhere that the reason why some people seem to hear the ringing or screaming or whatever the case may be, at night, is because things are quiet in the room when you are trying to get to sleep and you are more aware of any sounds while awake, whereas during the days you are constantly hearing outside loud noises that are distracting you. I find that my occurs mostly at night on some occasions, just the ringing only. It sounds like your ear problems will go away in time with your NTI. I was talking to a ear specialist (my hearing dr.) and he told me that tinnitus is one of those disorders that is very difficult to determine it's causes. It's associated with both tmjd and nerve deafness. It is impossible for anybody to know for sure if my tinnitus is the result of either of these two. That is the nature of tinnitus. My could be a result of my tmjd or it could be a result of my nerve deafness since birth. So, I guess I will never know for sure which condition is causing my problem...but it's something that not effecting my life because it's really a minor thing to me compared to the other things that come with tmjd...just a little annoying thing that comes and goes. You mentioned that something in the jaw around your ear has shifted that may be causing your problem...let me know later about it...sounds interesting...and hopefully your dr. can do something about it.
Thanks for listening and responding to me. You have a good tmj day. Talk to you later.
Sandi

Hi Sandi,
One late response to add:
I've had TMJD for 14 years and was diagnosed with tinnitus in 1998 by an audiologist. I have no hearing loss, however. Neither the audiologist nor I connected the tinnitus with my TMJD. In fact, the connection was only recently made by my dentist who, in May, started a neuromuscular splint/TENS treatment on me.
My tinnitus is constant, but I only notice it when it is quiet. It is like a "white noise" like when the TV is no longer broadcasting but a soft static sound comes out.
