HI, I just wanted to let you know that the reason I am not posting very much is because I am really not feeling too great. I am trying to go off of the amitriptyline at night (just 10mg) because I am gaining weight and I really don't want to be on it anymore. IT also causes me major heartburn. So in trying to get off of it, I am getting mild jaw pain and headaches during the day. I am taking motrin but it doens't seem to help. I am also stressed and trying to keep the house quiet while my husband sleeps during the day. Thank God tomorrow is the last day of that, next week starts normal hours. So say a little prayer for me, not feeling good at all, an tired of being the noise police, mommy on duty, taxi driver, cheif cook and bottle washer! I am a bit tired and worn tonight. The tens machine works but I think I might need another adjustment to my splint, locking up again. ONe step forward, two steps back sometiems, huh?
Thanks,
Mary
Thanks,
Mary

Hi Mary:
I'm so sorry to hear you are hurting again. Stress just seems to make the symptoms so much worse. I'm sure it will help when your husband goes back on days. If the medication you have been on is helping you maybe you should consider just cutting your dose down for a week or two and then try going off it again. I always find that if I taper off medications, going off is made so much easier. I used to be in a hurry to get off medications in the past too but then I finally said "oh the heck with it, I am going to do whatever I have to do to continue on and if that means taking medications so be it". I totally understand though when a medications is causing you problems like weight gain it becomes even more important to get off it ASAP. So, maybe consider tapering off instead of going off all at once, that might help. Hang in there.

Hello Mary -
Oh my goodness Mary, I was just going to post to see how you are doing.
(((((Mary)))))
Mary, might I suggest something. I know how badly you want to get off the drug. However, it is addictive, so your body might be use to it being in your body. What you need to do is gradually wing off of it. Unless you haven't taken any for awhile now. If it has been just a 2-3 days, then start tonite with like taking 3/4 of the pill. Then do that for a couple of days, then just keep stepping back cutting that pill smaller and smaller until you are off of it. But if it has been a few days, then you are most likely getting towards the end of your body wanting it, so don't do the step down program.
Call you NM Dentist, let him know you think you might be ready for another adjustment.
Also, when I was coming off the valuim, I started taking 2 Magnesium with Calcuim, made by Metagenics. I would take about an hour before bedtime. Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxer. Be careful though, it can cause the runs if you take to much http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dizzy.gif
You take it easy Mary, we are praying for you!

Mary,
I'm sorry to hear that things haven't been really good for you lately. I think that the girls are right....try weaning off of it, it may work out better for you. You are right, it's ALWAYS one step forward, two back. You're in my thoughts.
Take Care,
Cheryl

Hi Mary:
I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well. I was on amitriptyline briefly. The dentist recommended 10mg, but my doctor filled the prescription for 25mg. When I asked why, he said that was his usual starting dose!?, After 4 days on it, I woke up with my teeth more tightly clenched together than they'd ever been. I stopped for a few days, then thought I'd try half the dose. Got the same result, except it took longer to happen. I wasn't on it for more than 8 days and when I went off, I felt worse for a few days. That made me think it was something wouldn't want to be on long term, if going off after such a short period caused me some symptoms. It also made me a bit paranoid. Also like I was walking through life in a daze, observing myself going through the motions, but that I was removed from the action. If that makes sense. It made everything seem worse than it really was. Scary drug for me.
All of this will pass and you'll start feeling better. Perhaps a nice soak in the tub, then a relaxing tens treatment, and off to dreamland. zzzzzzzzzzz And tomorrow will be a better day.
Hugs,
Arleen

WEll,
I just decided that after 5 days of a headache I think I should stay on the amitrip... I was hoping that the tens machine was helping so much that I could do without it, but the truth is, it really does help me feel better. I only take 10 mg and I guess I can live at 142 lbs, when I know darn well I would look great at 125 it just does not seem to be happening in my 30s. I am going away next week as a camp counselor with 200 teen-agers, and I just can't be in this pain. So tonight I bit the bullit and took one. I have been so enjoying popping awake at 7:30 all week without it, but this dull aching pain is too much to bear. I guess I will try again in a few months. I am also going to call Dr. Wolford in the morning and see if I can't go for an adjustment before I go away. Thanks for the sweet wishes you all, you make me feel better knowing you care!

Good morning Mary!
I think that it is a good idea to stay on the amthp. especially knowing that you will be with 200 teenagers for a week! How fun though!
I did a little research on Amatrip.... also known as Elavil. Here are a couple things I copied for you to read:
1.
"Elavil is not addictive. However, suddenly discontinuing Elavil may cause withdrawal symptoms. Dosages should be gradually tapered to minimize withdrawal. Even gradual dosage reduction may produce some withdrawal symptoms."
"Elavil can cause photosensitivity and can reduce sweating which impairs the body's ability to adapt to heat. Patients should avoid saunas and other very hot environments."
"Antidepressant withdrawal, (Elavil) must be gradual to avoid withdrawal effects.
Make each dose reduction as small as possible, e.g. by halving the tablets or using a liquid preparation.
If smaller doses are not available, reduce by taking a tablet every other day, then every third day, etc.
Allow 1-2 weeks between each dosage reduction.
If withdrawal symptoms are severe increase the dosage slightly (e.g. to the dose at your last reduction). When symptoms have settled, resume withdrawal at a slower rate.
With slow tapering, as outlined above, withdrawal symptoms from antidepressants are usually absent, or if they occur, are mild and short-lived.
I know this is scary Mary, but it is the best way to get off of it, without symptoms of withdrawal.
Our bodies get use to the drug, so it just takes some time to get off of it.
I understand being able to get up bright eyed in the morning. It makes such a difference.
When you decide to get off of it, find some herbal support stuff while you go through. Milk Thistle & Alovera really helps in supporting your body while tapering back.
Enjoy those kids next week!

Hi Mary!
I am so glad you are feeling better Mary. When you decide to get stop taking it, just do the step down program and you should be okay. 10mg is a small amount but enough for your body to miss it. Boy, sure wish my body would miss about 25lbs!
How do you feel the tensing is working for you? I know with the splint, just about the time you really, really feel great, get ready for another adjustment.
Mary, Hugs to you, I hope you sleep tight.
