What things bring on severe TMJd on out of the blue?
Is it tooth aligment problems, stress that people grind so much the disks get our of place? Braces? What about surgeries, has anyone ever had jaw problems after surgery from the breathing tube in and holding the jaw so far open for a long surgery?
It seems there is no age limit on this board either. We have TMJd people who are 15 on up, men and women.
Do you think the LV school would be able to answer these questions for me. I only get suggestions from my doc and "we're not quite sure........."

Hi! From all that I have read, each one of these can possibly cause TMJD. In my case, I have no idea what caused it. It could be any of these except braces or an obvious tooth alignment issue--of course, just because my teeth line up properly, doesn't mean my jaws do.
Good luck,
TC

Hi MDLA!
Okay, the my nueromuscular dentist explained it to me, in regard to my TMJD.
As a little girl, I began to breath through my mouth because my parents would smoke in the car and couldn't handle the smell. Well, because of that, my upper pallet did not expand the way it should, which to do so, as a child, you must breath through your nose. That is what started it for me. Now, I was "subclinical" until 2 years ago when I had a bad filling that changed my bite. That took me from the "subclinical"... no symptoms, to full blown TMJD symptoms. Some people may have TMJD but have no symptoms all of their lives, until something like a bad filling, injury, car accident.
I hope this helps!

Hi MDLA,
I had the clicking in the late 80's then in 1996 I locked for 5 hours. Yes. My mom took me to the ER because at that point I was freaking out. Since then no problems. Just clicking when I was really tired. However, November 2002, I had a biopsy done in my upper left area (oral surgery). I had packing put in there and I couldn't open or close my jaw. When the packing came out it was okay. In Feb 2003, I had the surgery. Since then I have been locking periodically anywhere from 2-4 hours. My dentist feels that while I was under (in surgery) they yanked open and past my jaw's range and damaged it causing my locking. I am seeking help from a specialist now.

Hi Kim,
They think that surgery is what gave me TMJ too, at least my dentist thinks so, that with the breathing tube in my mouth and it being proped open for so long wacked out my disks. Now I lock all the time. I posted because all the docs seem to dance around the issue. Its like they kinda say that's what happened but not 100%.
