You may want to try ice on your jaw. Ice is good for pain. If tight, spasming muscles are the case you may want to try moist heat (wet washcloth in the microwave). You may try cycles of heat, ice, heat, ice for 15 min each, but always end in ice. Tylonol is also supposed to be helpful with tooth pain.

I don't know if your teeth pain is the same as mine (mine feels more like the gums) - but I finally went on neurontin. I'm up to 900 mg - it has helped tremendously, even though it can make you a bit dizzy and sleepy at first. My TMJ dentist, who is also an orofacial pain specialist, is managing my neurontin, but other doctors use it for all kinds of pain. Nothing else worked for me. But my pain may not be the same.

Thankyou everyone last night was so tough I even thought about suicide. I don't have 1600 for the treatment, and I cant live in so much pain. Quinn, the neurontin what is it for? Did you have pain in your teeth all over?

JP123,
Neurontin is a non-narcotic drug that is used to treat nerve pain. It works on the brain's neurotransmitters. That's about all I know. It was initially developed for epileptics, but is commonly used for people with all kinds of nerve pain, including severe back pain. My sister-in-law who has suffered from headaches (migraine) for years has been on 1200 mgs (900 is the basic dose for pain) for a year and a half. You have to work up the dose gradually and when you go off, you have to go off gradually also. It is also used for anxiety (my niece is on it for that). It has recently been in the news, because recent tests indicate it is good for sleep disorders and hot flashes. I can vouch for the latter (I am 56), since my hot flashes pretty much disappeared on only 200 mgs. My TMJ dentist uses it for people who have severe orofacial pain. It was taking me two hours to get to sleep before I got up to 900 mgs. I take it 3 times a day, but some people take it only twice or sometimes only at bedtime.
My teeth pain feels like my gums usually, but it also feels like the teeth sometimes. It moves around, sometimes, only the lowers, sometimes only a couple teeth, sometimes only the upper right teeth.
I know how you feel, I was beginning to think about suicide and death, too. (Pain and sleep deprivation eventually causes depression. I am also on Zoloft, have a psychiatrist who is wonderful, and I am looking for a counselor.) I am still not out of the woods with my jaw/neck. I am waiting for a splint, and I have just begun intensive physical therapy for my neck and jaw/head. I am still dizzy and have tinnitus, but I can sleep much better and have even gone back to work, even though I still get pretty tired. I am only eating soft stuff and pureeing other foods.
This whole TMJ/facial pain/neck stuff is a journey, a process, and it takes time - I keep telling myself, but I know exactly how you feel.

Hello people.
This is my first time on a bulletin board. You don't know how esctatic I was last night at 3am, not sleeping, and finding out there are others out there with the same kind of grief I'm suffering. The constant headaches, eye pain, ear pressure, etc. I thought it was a tumah! 'It's not a tumah!' I kept telling myself. My dentist has recommended I see a prostodontist. I looked that up on the net and found out they are basically tooth fixers with a side of TMJ specialist. Has anyone had success with a chiropractor or physiotherapist to relieve some pain and possibly work the muscles out? I'm on vacation now for a month and not looking forward to taking Tylenol every 2 hours...HELP!

Quinn, the tooth/gum pain that you have/had does the neurontin help that at all? Yes this kind of pain and the long journey to get well is very depressing, I have beeen on wellbutrin for 4 yrs because I have depression, and I am going to be starting another one soon, hopefully it will help with the suicide thoughts, although w/the pain still being there I doubt it. I just want to be able to be me again and to enjoy my kids 4, 22 mos.
Is there anything that you have found that helped with the tooth/gum pain, didnt it drive you crazy? DOu you still have it and if not what made it better? Can't wait to hear from you and thankyou.
