Has anyone here been covered by their insurance to see a neuromuscular dentist? I am hoping with a referral it would be. I spoke with one office today that said I have to come to the initial exam for $98, then they will check with the insurance. The oral surgeon I went to first got approval for all pre-treatment and surgery, because he coded TMJD as a medical condition. I am just wondering if the same is true for other treatments.....Thanks for any input.

Shelle,

I'm taking my son to see a Neuromuscular dentist right now. I believe that he started going in late May. The insurance IS reimbursing us slowly for some of the things that we had to pay up-front for. They are covering it. This is being sent in to our medical insurance though. His diagnosis was Myofacial Pain Dysfunction, which is a medical condition, so fortunately, it has been working out well for us.

I'm a bit surprised that your surgeon got your claims paid for by listing TMJD as a medical condition.
Take Care,
Cheryl

Hi Shelle-
Well, I do not have any insurance at all. The thing I know from this board, be sure that the nueromuscular dentist does not put it down as TMJD, as most insurance companies will not pay for TMJD treatment because there are so many bad treatments out there. As I understand though, they will pay for MPD Myofacial Pain Dysfunction. I would think the nueromuscular dentist would know that, but be sure and point it out to them when you go in for your first visit.
Hope this helps out

I noticed you said the insurance is slowly giving you back some of the money you spent on a neuro-dentist. Is the neuro-dentist you use doing the insurance submissions for you or do you have to do that on your own.

The reason I ask, I don't mind doing the work but when ever I submit myself it seems things never get paid. I also don't know what to think about a medical/dental establishment that doesn't offer to bill insurance on your behalf even when you do pay upfront because ive dealt with a guy who made my splint last year that turned out to be a big fraud.

Thanks Cheryl

This is my experience exactly. I figure if a dentist wants my money (and a lot of it) the least they can do is help get my claims processed faster. Im going to look around and see if I can find a neuro in my area that is more patient friendly.

I feel your pain. I just got my bill from my TMJ dentist and it was $3,000!!! There is nothing on the bill, however, about my insurance. Plus, he charged me for the NTI ($1100) which is totally ridiculous because he said he would only charge me whatever the insurance would pay. Hopefully he didn't go back on his word. Arg, I should have got that in writing.

Anyways, I'm going to call their office tomorrow as they are closed today (Sunday). If I have to pay $3,000 up front, I don't know what I'm going to do as I definitely do not have $3,000...I'm already a poor undergraduate. Weep...

WOW.........$1100 for an NTI!!!!! That's the most expensive NTI that I've ever heard of. My son used one, and the dentist 'gave' it to him, saying that they didn't cost that much.

You're telling me! They didn't even tell me how much it would cost. They just said they would charge me however much the insurance would pay. But then I get this bill with $1100 for the NTI and $1300 for the ortho splint. Is this reasonable at all? I'm worried that my medical insurance won't cover my TMJ...but they called before any payment was made and they assured me my insurance would cover at least 40%. But none of that was deducted from my bill. This makes no sense.

literati - $1100 for a NTI? that's ludicrous! mine only cost $100 [CDN]! maybe you should contact dr. jim boyd, the creator of the NTI. whenever i chatted with him, he was very helpful... maybe he's got an idea of how *not* to pay that much for it. jeeze. im sorry that your dentist screwed you like that.
