Hi everybody,
I just wanted to give you a update on my situation...went to the dentist today to get new impressions made of my teeth for a new splint which will be ready next week. It was difficult for me to open my mouth wide enough for the plates to go in...so the dentist had to use a smaller plate substitute. I can only open my mouth no more than 2 fingers width. It was not a pleasant experiance for me....or for the dentist. Anyway, I got the whole thing done O.K....so, I will see what my new splint will look like next week.
On my last visit back in July, my dentist had told me I had a super-eruption of my right back widsom teeth caused by my current splint which does not cover my back teeth ( the splint was not properly made by my general dentist)I had worn this splint for 3 years at night only. My dentist had made some suggestions on what to do about that teeth after my jaw is settle down abit, which could take a long time. One suggestion is to grind it down or at the last resort remove the widsom teeth, which I told him that will not be my second choice. So....my question to any of you that had a super-eruption of the back teeth....what has been your experiance with this or what suggestions can you make regarding this issue.
I would really appreicate any response from anybody who has gone through this...or any suggestions or comments.

Hi Sandra:
I don't believe I've had super eruption of my wisdom teeth, but you story sounds very familiar to me.
I had 2 fillings replaced almost 2 years ago and that completely threw my bite off. My teeth no longer fit together properly, they'd hit into each other, eating was difficult and everything started getting sore.
The second dentist I saw, shortly after this happened, made me a lower nightguard which included my wisdom teeth. I didn't end up wearing it much as it was hard acyrlic and hurt my teeth. The third dentist made me an upper, softer nightguard, which I wore to sleep. Occasionally I'd wear it for an hour during the day.
At the time I didn't know I had TMJD and kept getting referred from one dentist to another, with no one able to help. Well, I was finally referred to a prosthedontist. He said because the second nightguard didn't include my wisdom teeth, that they were now too high. They would need to be grinded down 1/2 to 1-1/2 mm. Depending how sensitive they were to the grinding and how much was needed, I may need caps on them. I would also need little adjustments made to some of my other teeth too to correct my bite.
This was a while before I found this board and all the wonderful people and useful information on it. I was at the end of my rope and was prepared to have this work done. Then I read that no teeth should be adjusted before your bite has been stabilized with a splint (or words to that effect). Several people also mentioned that unless you are wearing a splint almost 24/7, your teeth will not erupt. They won't erupt because when your chewing, or throughout the day, they will come into contact with other teeth. At least this is what I've heard from a number of sources. Perhaps someone else can address this better than I an.
I started thinking about what the prosthedontist wanted to do, and went back to look at the first nightguard I'd had made, which was very shortly after the problem started. Well, it turns out my wisdom teeth were high back then too, so my sense it that they've always been high, and they functioned perfectly well in my mouth and met the upper wisdom teeth perfectly. This dentist was wrong about everything he said to me.
There are also a number of people who's TMJD symptoms started by having a wisdom teeth pulled. TMJD can also be exacerbated by pulling a wisdom tooth. Pulling it will not necessarily lessen your TMJD symptoms, and COULD make them worse.
Take care,
Arleen

Arleen,
Thanks so much for telling me your story.
You said that you had 2 fillings replaced and that may have caused some problems for your jaw...well, did you evenually have those filling replaced again or your teeth corrected....what is your situation in that area now?
You mentioned the fact that you believed that your wisdom teeth were always high before wearing any of the splints...that confirmed my thinking that I better double check some things. Like checking out the orginal cast of my teeth that were done by my first dentist ( I regretted now that I never kept the first splint I had worn)So, that's the first thing I must find out, to see if my wisdom were always high. I seem to remember that they may have always been that way...but I am not sure. I am just trying to figure out this whole thing.
It was my understanding as well, that your teeth can only erupt if you were wearing your splint 24/7. But I only have been wearing this second splint at night only for 3 years....so I am still abit confuse about this area regarding super-eruptions. I mean, my dentist said today that he was quite sure my higher teeth were caused by my current splint...but the thing is, he doesn't know my full dental history with my first dentist. So, that's why I am trying to get to the bottom of this.
Regarding about having the wisdom teeth pull...I am not going to go there...period. I agree with you that pulling them could only make my tmjd worse.
Thanks again for taking your time with me...you have a good day....take care.

Hi Sandi,
Gosh...this made me wonder about my current splint situation. I am so crowded back by the wisdome teeth (left side) that my dentist could not manage to get the impression with that last tooth in the splint mold. My nm splint just leaves that tooth uncovered. I am supposed to wear this splint 24/7 - though I've been taking it out to chew food. Do you think I should be concerned about the supra erruption as well. I kept meaning to ask my dr. about this but never remembered. I can't imagine he wouldn't be familiar as he's got 20+ years experience with these splints.... hmmm - what do you think?? Thanks for bringing up this topic!!

RobynRose,
I find it odd that your dentist wasn't able to cover your back wisdom teeth with the impression material...and you ended up with a splint that doesn't cover that teeth...well, what about the other side (right)...is that cover with the splint? As for your concern for a super-eruption in your wisdom teeth...how long does your dentist want you to wear this splint other than for 24/7? If he wants you to wear it longer than 6 months to a year for 24/7....I would have some concerns about that. My left widsom teeth was erupted as a result of wearing my splint that didn't cover any of the wisdom teeth for 3 years which was only worn at night. So, if I were you....discuss this with your dentist...ask as many questions you can think of....and make sure he gives you answers that you will be satisfied.
I would like to hear from you again regarding my question to you....and let me know also when you do see your dentist the next time...what he says about your splint.....
Have a good night and talk to you later.
