I am having a really a hard day today. Some days are just worse than others and today would be one of them. My right side has sharp shooting pains right in front of my ear. I can tell just by the way today has gone that tonight will not go very well...Help.....What do some of you guys do when you are really hurting? I know ice, pain meds, but when that doesn't really help? Cally22

HI Cally,
I'm sorry I can't be of more help. I wish I knew what to tell you to do for the pain. My dentist told me at my last appt that shooting pains that come and go in the joints are sometimes caused by compression in the joints (of the joint space I guess). I'm sure you already knew that, though. Just thought I would pass that along. I know you have been through a lot and hope you get some relief very soon.
Take care,
TC

cally...just thought I would add that an evening walk with the dog helps me sometimes...never really feel like it, but once I get out I am thinking about other stuff and sometimes forget about my pain for awhile! Also, if you own a dog or cat...sometimes it helps just to sit and pet them! This pain is crazy sometimes and I am so new to all this, but learning quickly! Hope you get to feeling better and get a good nights sleep! TC!

Dear mamaslittlehelper,
(hope I spelled your name right, sorry if I didn't) I really appreciate your advice also, only problem is I don't own any pets. See I'm still in high school which makes this tmj thing even the more harder, but my parents don't let us have pets so... but I get your point, and you know what, that is what is kind of sad about tmj, and we suffers of tmj, we tend lose out on a lot of fun stuff, or at least i'll speak out for myself in th past four years. i've satout so much, and I,ve gave up so much. You almost lose out on what is important? Do you know what I mean Or am I out on a limb by myself?

Cally...I am still pretty new at this tmj thing as it had gone "dormant" for several years, but just reappeared after a dental proceedure...but I am getting older(I'm 40!ugg!)and know what its like to not be able to participate in things I used to be able to do! I just try to do what I can and don't beat myself up too much for the things I can't! You are so young, though, and you should try to stay involved with as much as you can...even if it is just painting a picture or writing a poem...getting outside in the fresh air and sunshine is good too...also I have found that just to help or comfort someone else can be the best therapy! So sorry to hear you cannot have pets...but I have an idea for that and this is really silly cause I'm 40 and all, but here goes...I also sleep with a stuffed animal! LOL! It is one of those made by TY and I lay it on my chest at night and am comforted by it! Silly, huh...but I got into the "habit" of sleeping with it several years ago and now I'm very attached to it! So there you go...it might not be as good as the real thing, but you could give it a try! Good luck and TC!

Dear mamaslittlehelper thanks, once again your words are so-- helpful, you know just what to say, its kind of funny, about the stuffed animal thing, b/c I do that already, and its ok if you're going on 40 and still find comfort in it b/c I say go with whats comfortable. Thank you for taking time out and responding because it helps me. You may not think it does,at times but it does...It doesn't matter if you are new or an old pro at the tmj thing, all advice is helpful. and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.Good luck with your tmj problems,Cally22!

Your very welcome cally! Thanks for not thinking I'm silly about the stuffed animal thingy...it really does seem to help sometimes though!
What grade are you in at school? I have a daughter who just started 10th grade today...she has signs of tmj and I worry sometimes that she will suffer with it someday although it doesn't seem to bother her much right now. We are keeping an eye on it though!
I go to see the tmj dentist tomorrow and am hoping to finally get some help with this...I'm a little bit anxious about the whole thing, but looking forward to discussing it with him! I'll let cha' know how it goes...till then take care!
