Hey,
Has anyone been to any doctors in NY? I have to been to quite a few and am still looking for someone to properly help me. If anyone knows anything about any docs, please let me know.

I'm here in NY too. Also interested in finding the right doctor. I've only had one consult thus far - and I'm continuing my search. I have other joint/muscle conditions, and my physical medicine doctor just referred me to a tmj specialist - DR. DONALD R.TANENBAUM. She said he's relatively conservative and understands the neuromuscular implications...I believe trained in the "Gelb" method.
I'm still not clear as to what the "Gelb" method is, but I plan to do my research there. Are you (or any others familiar??)
In any case, I'd like to keep in touch on this - perhaps together we can locate the best doctor for the mission. How long have you had problems with the tmj?

Hi Robyn,
I have been suffering from TMJ for 6 years now. I've been going from doctor to doctor, and haven't found any help yet. I know there is something called a "gelb" appliance - a special type of biteplate invented by Dr. Gelb. But I have no idea what the Gelb method is. Every one of these docs seems to have his own special trick that he claims works, but I have yet to find one that worked. Some tried tens unit, which didn't help. I'm hoping to get a biteplate made. I'm in so much pain. it's driving me crazy. My discs are out of place and that's whats causing me all these problems - jaw locking, popping, inflammation, headaches, diziness, and more. I've been to some dentists and some oral surgeons. The surgeons immediately wanted to try arthoscopic surgery to try and recapture the discs but everyone on this board says NO to surgery. The docs themselves told me the surgery hardly ever helps and it almost always causes some type of facial disfigurement, usually temporary and sometimes permanent. I went to one surgeon who seemed very confident about the surgery and I went for a follow up appointment a few weeks later to discuss the surgery, and it turned out he lost his license. So i'm glad I didn't have that surgery. I'm getting very hopeless. Hopefully the biteplate will do something. Just need to find someone who knows what they're doing. Some people have also recommended physical therapy.
So what's your story? How long have you had this and do you know exactly what's wrong?

Have you tried splint therapy before? You need conservative treatment before any talk of surgery occurs.
Some tmj drs just don't know how to handle the situation
and refer you off to surgery, which is horrible.

I have a friend who was treated with the Gelb appliance, after that appliance she was moved to several other appliances and eventually ended with braces. She is very pleased with her results and is no longer in pain. I'm not really sure what the Gelb method is but she swears by the Gelb appliance which is different from other splints. If you do a search on the net you can find information on the Gelb appliance and even some pictures of it.

I think your mention of the "Gelb" appliance might be what was meant by the Gelb method. I believe the doctor who invented this appliance was named Harold Gelb - and is located in New York City.
As for my "story"-- it's pretty long and complicated, but my major head/neck symptoms came on following a myelogram test that was done as I was preparing to have a spinal fusion (lumbar). This never happened.
I've suffered with headache and neck pain - as well as jaw pain and subluxations for almost a year now. My spine woes go back 10 years. In a nutshell, it seems my ligaments are extremely fragile - stretch out way too much and don't support the joints. Of course then the muscles respond by trying to guard - and go into wicked spasm. I never new how all this could impact the tmj??!!! I feel like I've gotten on a runaway train and can't get off.
Anyway, Stacie - since you've seen so many ny doctors... by any chance did you ever hear of this Donald Tanenbaum?? I understand he was trained by Gelb - and does only tmj casework. I'd love to know more if you are familiar. How about a doctor named Barry Cooper?? Like you - I'm on a mission to find the right doctor -- quite an undertaking I know.
Are you in NYC -- or nearby?? Keep in touch -- I'm due to have a consult with D. Tanenbaum beginning of June, so I'll let you know what happens. He has an office in NYC - and one here on Long Island.

I have had it done on my neck and it never did anything for me. Someone also mentioned Dr. Barry Rosenberg. I think he also has practices in Long island and NYC. If Gelb is so great and is in NYC, how come we all don't go to him? No one has ever told me to go to him...i've just heard of the Gelb appliance.I'm just outside of NYC and I've been to a lot of docs in Manhattan, dentists and oral surgeons and am still looking! Let me know if you heard of Dr. Rosenberg. And let me know how your consult goes!

Thanks for writing!! Yes... I asked my physiatrist who referred me to Tanenbaum, why not Gelb. She said the "senior" Gelb (he has a son who joined the practice) - is really not seeing patients any more (either that or it was impossible to get an appointment?). She didn't feel his son was nearly as skilled - so she preferred Tanenbaum who was trainted by Gelb, but was talented in his own right. Who knows.
I've really considered Barry Cooper because he seems to have phenomenal credentials - lots of research and scientific publications all on tmj disorder. I'm with you though - the tens therapy has never done a thing for me with the spine problems, so I'm reluctant to think it could address the tmj.
I haven't heard of Rosenberg... but will do some research. It sounds like this is going to be a very tough road ahead. I've dealt with the same issues with my "loose back".... can't believe it's happening with the jaw now. Do you have other muscular/skeletal issues as well? I know you mentioned the neck.
