Hi Cheryl,
Oh gosh, sorry to hear you had to go through so much dental work today. Ouch! I agree with you on the waiting till things hurt to get them done just to avoid the pain afterwards from the TMJD problems. I hope you feel better soon!
That was so nice of the dentist to give Mike another NTI to get him through until he gets the new splint. I hope Mike's headaches improve some after tonight when he start wearing it again.
My teeth are so off Cheryl and it is starting to really bother me. Some of my bottom teeth are starting to hurt from the way they are being hit by the top ones. I am trying really hard all day not to let my teeth touch together. I find myself closing them together to check how the bite feels sometimes. I know I am making things worse doing that though so I am trying really hard not to do it. Thank goodness I am still taking the 1/2 flexeril or I know my muscles in my face would be hurting along with this. I did wake up with a headache this morning but it wore off by this afternoon luckily. I am not sure if I will make it till my appt. on the 11th. If it is still bothering me so much next week I am going to call over to the dentist and see if they can squeeze me in to check things out. I do not know why my teeth shifted so much but I think it started that weekend I tried to stop the flexeril. I know I had two nights in a row where I had trouble falling asleep and did a number clenching too. I don't know why it isn't going back to where is was since then. I was thinking if I took a whole flexeril maybe it would help things to relax more and they would improve again, but I don't want to run out before my appt on the 11th.
Well, I better get going to bed here. Emily is still up too. I think she may be starting on a sinus infection to top it off. She hasn't had one for 2 months and I was just saying to my Mom the other day that it is a record for her. But she usually goes all summer without one. Hoping she is okay for the weekend. I will talk to you tomorrow. Oh and thanks for that info. on the irritable bowel thing. I had read that somewhere about the coconut macaroons too. I never tried them though. The caltrate has worked wonders for me with this. I kinda figured the magnesium would make me run all day so I doubt I will ever try it. Take care, Michelle
PS. Haven't used the oven the last 2 nights. Only the stove so dinner was okay. We are trying to wait till Christmas time when Mike gets all his tips from his paper route customers to get a new one. I just hope it lasts that long and I don't burn too many dinners.

Hi Cheryl,
Well, that is really good to hear that Mike's neck is hurting less today with wearing the NTI. Sorry to hear that your teeth are hurting so much. I get like that every time I have fillings. My teeth are so hypersensitive from the clenching to begin with so my dentist told me that is part of it. I sure hope that wisdom tooth calms down for you in the next few days. I hate new fillings. What a pain for you. Let me know how they feel tomorrow.
Things are really flaring up for me today. I felt okay when I first got up and I was extremely careful not to clench at all thinking I would nip this but the headache just started and all my top teeth feel achy. (also my face muscles) I think the humidity had something to do with it too. Needless to say I took a whole flexeril tonight to see if that helps. I sure hope it does. I hate being so miserable all day. I took Emily to a farmer's market (her cold is not bad at all thankfully, just stuffiness) and it was so hot there I couldn't wait to leave. But she was having fun rooting through Happy Meal toys. We did stay there for about 1 1/2 hours but then she was getting hot too. It stormed tonight though and cooled things down a bit.
Well, hope you have a good weekend. Did you get your cleaning done or should I send the cleaning lady over? (haha) Maybe she can bake some cookies for me while she is there. (one's that aren't burned) Take care and talk to you soon, Michelle

Hi Cheryl,
Well, I am feeling much better today. I think taking the whole flexeril helped things alot. I am going to take a whole one tonight again. I guess my fear is that when I run out they will not want to call anymore in for me since they are not normally used long term. I guess I will have to cross that bridge when I come to it though.
That is good that your wisdom tooth filling felt like it was calming down last night. Does it feel even better today? I hope so. Mine usually feel better after about 2 days and then totally normal in a week. If they don't then I know there is something else wrong. (like the one that was root canaled and crowned) I do get pain in some of my lower teeth at certain spots sometimes because they are so worn out from my clenching. It is a amazing what we can do to ourselves isn't it?
How is Mike feeling today? I hope even better since using the NTI again? So, he isn't excited about school, huh? Tell him not to worry I am sure he will meet some new friends and it will turn out to be a good year for him. Does he know any kids that go there already? That always helps. Emily is excited to go back but at the same time she is not wanting summer to end. She likes swimming too much. Plus she found out that her best little friend is in the other 2nd grade class this year. This is the first year they are in different classes. But they will get to play at recess and it is such a small school that they will still see each other alot. Even when there are birthday parties both classes usually get invited. I honestly don't know how these parents afford it having parties that big. I did tell Emily that this year we could have it at the bowling alley and maybe have 10 kids. (including her cousins) But that is not till Dec. and she may change her mind 10 times before then.
Well, I better get going here. We need to pick up dinner for my Gram soon and get it over to her. We do that every Saturday. Sometimes she treats us too. Well, I will talk to you soon, Take care, Michelle

Hi Cheryl,
That is really good to hear that the wisdom tooth doesn't bother you today. I wonder if it is a bit high with your clenching on it? So funny how our bodies just know when something is slightly off.
Your talking about Mike going to school made me think back to my first year of Sr. High. I was still in Catholic school then and they used to make such a big deal out of Freshman initiation back then that you were terrified on the first day. When I went to the public school for my senior year I don't remember that happening to the freshman there. It was so different between the two schools in so many ways. I honestly have to say I liked public school better. Not sure why, I think it was because the kids there were so much more humble and came from so many different backgrounds. Tell Mike I hope he has a great year and I will be thinking of him on the first day. Like you said, after about a week he will probably like it and make alot of new friends.
Things are okay here today. I am feeling half decent. Took another whole flexeril last night. I think I will tonight too. It seems to be helping even though the bite is so off. I have said from the beginning that if I don't get the bite fixed I will always have this problem and can only manage the pain. I really wish there was some way to fix my bite that did not include surgery. I plan to discuss this with my dentist on the 11th. (or sooner maybe)
Well, I better get going here. I need to run my niece home so we can eat an early dinner. Mike has a softball playoff game at 6. The team captain asked me if I would play tonight as they are short on girls (they have to have 3). I told him I don't really want to but will if it would mean they have to forfeit. I am really hoping they let it slide with only the 2 girls and I don't have to play.
Take care and I will talk to you soon, Michelle

Hi Cheryl,
Yum! Stuffed cabbage. My favorite. Can you send some to me? I bet it was delicious. My Granny used to make it a few times a year and back then I didn't even eat it. My tastes have changed so much as I get older. Now my older sister makes it once in awhile and she always sends some over.
So, how did the urology testing go today for Mike? Was he okay through it. How about you? Gosh Cheryl, you are really in my prayers on this one. Poor Mike. But I hope they figure out exactly what is going on there with these tests. You hadn't said, had he been feeling any better with it or was it still the same?
Things are okay here today. Have a mild headache and alot of facial tension and muscle weakness. I don't think the flexeril is working as well anymore. My body probably adjusted to it now. I think things would be alot worse if I wasn't taking it though. I am really going to try to wait till the 11th to see the dentist as this is Emily's last full week off school and I want to do fun things with her. Then next week when she starts school it is my busiest billing week. I know I am stupid for not getting over there right away but I am so tired of my life revolving around this problem. Guess I am rebelling. But if it gets too bad I will call right away. So far it is bearable. Not like this time last year when I wished I was in bed all day.

Hi Cheryl,
Tell Mike I will be thinking of him tomorrow with school starting. Wishing him good luck and that he meets alot of new friends that he can hang out with and have fun. He needs that so much right now.
Oh, I am so sorry to hear about your dog Cheryl. What did they say they can do for it, anything? I understand your attachment I had a cat for 15 years at my Mom's house. (he stayed there when I moved out) (I tried to take him the first time I moved and he wouldn't come out from under the couch for a week) Anyway, he was there through all my good times and bad times and he cuddled up with me every night. It has been almost 2 years since he passed and I still look for him when I go there.
Did you hear anything from the urologist today yet? I sure hope they figure it out and it is something very simple to take care of for Mike. But what a day you had yesterday. And then a thunderstorm to top it off. While Mike is in school you will need to take a nice long bubble bath and do some things for yourself. If we lived closer we could go to lunch and shopping. That would be fun. Now, how will that work with his chiro and masso appts? Will they be after school now? Long days for him.
Well, I better get moving here. Emily is grumpy tonight because she is tired from being up early for Meals on Wheels today. She really does work hard there helping. And she loves the people. It's like she has alot of extra grandparents now. Well, I will talk to you tomorrow. Take care, Michelle

Hi Cheryl,
Oh, please do let me know how Mike did today at HS. I was thinking of him. I am sure it went fine. Did he meet any pretty girls today? That will be next. Oh, I hope Emily waits to talk about boys till middle school at least. Some of the girls in her first grade class had already chosen boyfriends last year. She still says yuck. (haha)
I am feeling okay I guess. Still having a mild headache but what is bothering me most is the bite and the muscle fatigue and achiness in the face again. Even with the flexeril it is there. But I am going to hang in there till the 11th. That is the big day for Mike too with getting his splint. We'll both have stories to share that day.
Boy, I hope it is something they can correct with the dog. You definitly don't need the stress of losing her right now. What is her name anyway, Cheryl?
How was Mike feeling this am? Is the NTI still keeping things somewhat under control for him? I often wondered if that would help me with the clenching problem. But I have such an overbite and I guess it may make that worse for me. I think I will mention it to my dentist though just to see what he says. It was the orthodontist that said it wouldn't be good for my overbite. Maybe my dentist will think differently. Clenching is my biggest problem rather than grinding. But right about now just chewing food gives me a flare up. Oh well, maybe I can lose the 10 lbs. I had finally gained back. Good thing I kept all those clothes. (haha)
Well, I better get going here. Emily and Mike are down at my parents pool and I promised yet again to walk down and watch her swim. I will talk to you later. Take care, Michelle

Hi Cheryl,
I have to be quick as Mike and Emily are starting a movie without me but I just wanted to check in and see how Mike made out today. So sorry to hear he has been so nervous. You know what Cheryl, I have a niece that just turned 15 and she is driving my sister crazy already with the nervousness. She won't eat anything before she leaves the house and here the girl never ate any lunch yesterday and then had tennis practice after school to boot. 12 hours with no food. My sister was ready to scream. It must be the age or something. I sure hope Mike did better today for you. That is good that he met 2 new friends already. Tell him not to worry about lunchtime to just go sit with some kids and start talking. Maybe they are nervous too and he can help them. Mike sounds like such a nice guy. Too bad you aren't closer and he and my niece could meet.
So, how is Holley today? I hope she is a little better. I bet you were so relieved when she ate and was okay. Oh, that is too funny that you named her after the carburetor. Is there a story behind that?
Well, we met Emily's teacher today. She is nice but a bit too organized for me. (and I am a pretty organized person) Would you believe she actually made us put Emily's name on each individual crayon, pencil and marker we brought in? She actually made me quite nervous. Hopefully it will be okay as Emily is a good student and the year will just fly by without any problems.
How have you been feeling Cheryl? How is that wisdom tooth? Feeling totally normal yet? I was okay today for the most part. Hanging in till the 11th.
Well, they are calling me to watch the movie with them. I better get going. I will talk to you tomorrow. Take care, Michelle

Hi. I noticed you both talking a lot about the NTI and wondered if you can give me some insight. I am fairly new to the pain part of TMJD. I was given an NTI by my last dentist 1+ years ago since I had slight headaches. I did not have pain that whole time, then. Nothing. When my new dentist told me that my overbite increased by 6 mm in six months and I needed braces due to the NTI, I was furious and stopped using it, back in May.
I was sent to a Head and Neck pain clinic and they gave me a full splint to go over my bottom teeth. After two months of using it and $400 later, my pain is increasing everyday. It is now 24 hours a day, well, 23 because the 1st hour of the morning is okay. It is extreme, in my jaw muscles, teeth, cheeks, cheekbones, temples, forehead, tongue. I can't enjoy anything due to it.
I am going to this clinic 1x/4weeks for physical therapy, biofeedback, and to see the TMJ specialist himself as well as heat packs 2x/day, stretches for the jaw muscles, flexiril at night once in a while, and 3 minute relaxation breaks every 2 hours and a meditation/guided imagery relaxation of 20 min every other day (this last thing is the only thing that gets me results, lasts 2-3 hours of less pain).
My questions are:
1. Should I just go back to the NTI? If so, won't my overbite increase and then what? Do you just keep getting braces over and over again?
2. What is your experience with the splint? Will my pain go away in time?
3. Do you know anything else that works for pain?
Thank you for any tips you can give me!
Sara

Sara

Hi Cheryl,
Well, sounds like Mike's 2nd day wasn't too bad. It's great that he's making some friends already. As for my niece she is already stick skinny and she eats like a horse too usually. This school stuff just makes her so nervous that she can't seem to swallow her food. My sister is getting her some of those yogurt popsicles for in the morning. Hopefully that will work. I told my sister to be careful she doesn't start with an eating disorder over this. She cannot afford to lose weight.
Emily is definitely ready for school to begin now that we were there yesterday. (me too!! haha) We covered all her books this morning with brown grocery bags and she colored them all.
Sounds like you have a nice weekend ahead. That will be nice having your Uncle in I bet. And the air show sounds good too. The only thing we have is a cookout at my Mom's on Monday. It will just be nice to have Mike home 2 days in a row for once. That doesn't happen much.
Oh, I cut the flexeril down to 1/2 again so that I have enough till the 11th. It has been 2 nights and so far so good.(no changes for the worse) I have been noticing a lump in my throat when I swallow. I didn't panic right away as I remembered reading about that on here already so I figure it is probably related. But now I am wondering if it is coming from my chiropractor treatments at all. It did start last Tuesday after my masso and adjustment. Just a thought. But I am trying not to panic. It is not there all day, it comes and goes. But I do not like that feeling.
It is good to hear that your teeth are feeling fine now. That is a relief for you I know. You don't need any additional problems right about now. You have more than enough already. I am still praying for you every day. (and Mike too)
Well, I better get going here. Emily is waiting to go for a short swim. It is not real hot here, just warm and humid so I told her it will not be a long one today. Take care and have a great weekend, Michelle
PS. The box of crayons was only 16 thank goodness.

TC,
Thanks for the note about the crayons. Nice to know we are not the only one's with a totally organized teacher. How was the rest of the school year with that teacher? I am hoping it will be okay.
Take care, Michelle

Hi Sara,
Wish I could help you where the NTI is concerned but the only thing I know about them is what I have read on the internet. When I asked my orthodontist about it he mentioned it would make my overbite worse so I never went any further with that. I can say that I would not keep wearing one if it was making my overbite worse and I definitely would not wear braces again then. I wore braces once as a teen and have decided that I will not take that route again. The orthodontist had said that braces may not fix my bite completely and that I may need a surgery to go with them. Well, that sent me runnning.
The dentist I now see specializes in myofacial pain disorders. He said that braces can sometimes make a situation worse. But I have never asked him about an NTI. I am going to mention it to him at my next appt. just to see if that is a possible option. Clenching is my biggest problem and the NTI prevents that.
Wish I could help you more. As for things for the pain, pretty much everything you listed is what I have done or am doing. I wear an upper splint right now but it is made of hard acryllic and if I clench on it too much I still get a headache. My new dentist made me a lower one(much more comfortable and softer) but I only wear it during the day sometimes. The upper one had something done to it orthodontically to close my bite up some and when I don't wear it I notice the difference. What do they say at the clinic about the splint making your pain worse? Maybe it needs to be adjusted?
Well, again, wish I could help you more, take care and hope you feel better soon, Michelle
