Well first of all i want to say what a great find this board is, until a week ago i did not know that my problem existed. I have been suffering with Jaw pain for over 4 years now and in that time i have had most of my upper back teeth removed by a dentist that told me there was nothing wrong with them but thought we should take them out anyway to get rid of my pain.
Needless to say it did not.
I have extreme pain in my jaw, teeth, eyes, and forehead, ringing ears etc etc. I have just lost my job and this week the pain has gone on to another level. I started taking Ibuprofen and they seem to make it worse, the only thing that helps is a hot flannel held on by jaw joint.

My life is falling apart, i feel ill all the time, i am short tempered, bad concentration and my love life is virtually non existent as i can't be bothered at night after being in pain all day i am totally and utally exhausted.

I have an appointment on Friday with a TMJ specialist which is rare in the UK, no one else seems to know anything about it,even my doctor.

I will post the details of the appointment. In the mean time i feel like i have eventually found some people that know what i am going through, i thought i was going mad.

If anyone has any treatment advice on easing the pain it will be much appreciated.

Thank you all
Chris

Hi Chris,

Welcome to the Board!! Good to have you here as part of our little "TMJ family" - but sorry you have to be here. You'll find lots of good people and information here.
You mentioned you get some relief using a hot flannel - is it moist heat you're using? Generally, moist heat is recommended. Most of us here don't like to take a lot of medications for TMJ, but some have found that low doses of an antidepressant can help with chronic pain, and can "take the edge off" tension/depression, which usually accompanies TMJ.
Do let us know how you make out with your TMJ appointment!

Welcome,
Marlene

Chris,
Welcome to "our family". Terrible family ties we have, PAIN!!! :( This disease is horrible but the main thing is try to keep a postive attitude and remember you are not in this alone. Somedays I wonder what did I do to deserve this, but...I have no answer. When I get to feeling down, I come to this board. It does help to be able to talk to others in the same mess.
Sometimes I use moist heat, other times, ice feels better. Have gotten to where I can't sleep with a pillow or end up with a migraine.
I hope you find a good specialist because you are right, "nobody seems to know much about TMJD". A lot of guess work going on and lots of times, patients end up worse off. Make your choices wisely and get more than one opinion if you don't like what you're hearing.
Take care and good luck with your appointment.

Hi C.

My TMJD symptoms have been acting up lately -- ear popping blowing sounds, shooting pain in bottom back tooth(it's under root canal watch but the dentists don't know for sure if it's an infection causing the pain or not -- I bet TMJD), jaw pain, etc;. THe pain behind the eyes is really annoying. I work at a desk job with a computer all day and the pain is unbearable. I don't know how much longer I can go on with my job -- but then there are no jobs so I am stuck.

I've been suffering for a year and a half and my symptoms seem to be getting worse. I just would like to tell people to think twice before even entering a dentist's office because in my wildest nightmares I never would have imagine the allegedly "minor" dental procedure I had done on 9 teeth would turn my life into the misery it is now!!!

Talk about a love life forget about that ... When my jaw and teeth starts up I can't even think about kissing someone on the cheek even yuck -- the whole mouth/jaw doesn't feel right not to mention the pain. It's very depressing.

I was wondering -- how did you develop your TMJD -- accident, bad dental... Once it gets messed up it's something that can;t be fixed in my experience.

Hi Elaine,

I read one of your other posts about a friend that had trouble with a hospital procedure for her back and was "drooling like a dog" and ready to "cash out" -- it was frightening(you have a way with words). IS doing better now????

Antoni,
My friend is doing ok but will alway have back problems. The staph infection did a number on her spine.
The hospital where this happened, should be shut down, it is nothing more than a vet stop. I had a baby in this same hospital in 1971. She was full term, weighed 7-3 and beautiful. She lived for an hour. Died because they didn't get the mucous cleaned out. A nurse made the mistake of telling my mother-in-law that. Do you think I could get anywhere with it? Hell no, another cover up. They wrote down cause of death as something to do with the internal organs, resulting in breathing problems. It makes me sick to see everyday, just how much the rotten doctors do actually get away with, yet they want your life savings to treat you!!! Bad thing is it doesn't matter the end result, they still want their money... http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/confused.gif

Hi C.

I am not surprised my story is similar. I had 9 done(4 on one side, 5 on the other). My bite is off, I suffer TMJD symptoms on and off.

After seeing like 6 dentists and 3 prosthodontists. THe prosthodontist(bite specialist) took a mold of all my teeth and he could see that all nine teeth were hitting or not hitting the bottom ones right. It was all off. What he suggested as being the least painful fix was to shave all my teeth down as well as the fillings. I know this sounds horrible but it really wasn't and things are not as bad as they were in the beginning. He still would have to add more material to like 6 of the teeth to get something in the range of "normal". But if fillings are "too high" it means they have too much material and hit the bottom teeth too hard which causes discomfort to the jaw.

Maybe doing a mold of all your teeth to see where the problems lie may help. GOod luck. I was prescribed tylenol with codeine at one point from my medical doctor when the pain got really bad and till I received the bite adjustment treatment.

GOod luck

Elaine,

I remember what THe old timers(people right from the old country) say just let nature take it's course because they don't trust doctors. Doctors can make things worse.

ANd there's one elderly friend of mine who never goes to doctors or dentists and all people say is that she doesn't know what;s wrong with her, but she seems to be doing OK and functioning with day to day activities.

I mean after what happened to me, I try to avoid going to medical doctors because I think now they may recommend unnecessary procedures for x-rays or tests or whatever. If not in pain, they won't see any money from me.

Antoni,
My dad is one of them old timers who didn't believe in doctors. He could be dying and still went to work, sick. He is now 83 years old and doing well for his age. He had nine brothers and sisters, all died from cancer. He has never been tested for cancer and he said he has out lived all the ones who were treated for cancer, so why bother? He figures if he has cancer and did the chemo like the rest of his family did, he would be where they are. He is probably right as I know a lot of people who did chemo and it spread, resulting in death. I think a lot of things need to be left alone. Look in the olden days when there were no doctors, people lived a lot longer.

I like this post!!! People who don't believe in doctors seem to live longer. The more I think about it and with what I have seen, I think there is a lot of truth to it!

Elaine,

I didn't know that you lost a child back in '71 due to medical errors....I'm so sorry to hear this, that's terrible. I'm beginning to have little or no trust in the medical field. My heart goes out to you.

Hi Elaine, CL

I can't believe its a year since this last thread.

I got a new job so I didn't make it to the TMJD clinic in Buffalo. But some of my co-workers had me go with them to a dentist they swear by near work and she supposedly does really good work. She took a mold of my teeth and is analyzing it. When she looked at my teeth at first she noticed the bite was really off and the partial crowns I paid the prosthodontist 8,000.00 for are guess WHAT TOO LOW???!!!! She says I know you paid alot of money and to go back but I said NO-Way. We'll see what she can do for me. I feel his lousy onlays should be replaced but I run the risk that things could be made worst again.

But as we know the quality of life is so poor with the bad bite, I'll see what I may do.

Time flys but the TMJD stays the same or gets worse. With his low onlays, the neck pain GOT WORSE. Missing back teeth or if they are TOO LOW IS A ONE WAY TICKET TO GETTING TMJD.

How have you beeen Elaine. Will catch up on your other threads.

A

Hi Elaine:

I'm so sorry to hear that you lost a child, especially to medical incompetence. Boy, Elaine, you've been through so much. I hope and prayer that the future holds a lot of happier times for you.

Take care,
Arleen
