I would like to reply to your sytoms of TMJ.
I had ne wdetures put in, in dec, and then 2 weeks after that, I had this noise in my left ear, and then I heard it again in Jan, and feb, did not hear it any more untill july, now I have this viberating noise in my left ear, all the time, and then I went back to the dentist, to see if my bit e was off, he filed a bit down on the right side, and then 2 weeks later, I got a clogged ear, and dizzyness, in my right ear.
My ears are clogged up, neck pain, and dizzyness, and a feeling of off balance.
I have got 5 teeth left, on the top, and since I had my new dentures, I get this ache, and pain in the remining teeth, which comes and goes.
I have a bad stiff neck, and sore left arm, and back ache.
Does that sound like TMJ, plus I have bad headaches, and a sore jaw, on the right side, which aches near the jaw bone, but not on the disc, where you open your mouth.
Any ides.

Here's mine:

*Jaw soreness that radiates up into my temples
*Jaw stiffness
*Clenching and grinding
*Ear fullness
*Sensitive to sounds
*Neck pain up and down the back of my neck
*HEADACHES/MIGRAINES

*Insomnia...because I ran out of my pain medication early because I have had to take more than prescribed at least twice this week due to severe pain...so I took a Flexeril last night even though it had caused me a bad reaction last time (made me very sleepy and heart fluttery)...so I have slept most of this day away and now I am wide awake and very, very much in pain! Going to go get the trusted heating pad and hit the sheets anyway...nite all and TC! ;-(

hi... dont know if i have TMJ but main symptoms are:

- dizziness/foggy headed feeling
- full feeling ears and pain
- pain around jaw joint
- neck stiffness and pain
- jaw cracking occasionally, stiffness
- swollen feeling in throat

saw a dentist who agreed my symptoms point to TMJ but said my bite is fine and i have no evidence of grinding, and i have a loose jaw so it cant be bad TMJ and certainly not bad enough to warrant treatment.
have also just seen a specialist doctor who didnt even mention TMJ or an inner ear disorder and told me ill magically feel better soon.

but my symptoms feel bad to me! :(

(Sorry, I didn't mean to post twice, I meant to edit the first message!)
My symptoms now are;

- Some mild aching in right joint when I wake or open my jaw.
- Tension and aching in right shoulder, sometimes left.
- When I move my jaw to the right or left I quite often hear a whistling noise like air being expelled in my right ear.
- Ear sensitivity to noise, especially music and car engines, noise starting off humming and rumbling in my ears. Popping in my ears when I swallow.
- Hearing clicking in my head when I run or jump.
- Pressure changes, fullness in my ears if I change altitudes.
- Puffy around eyes (my eye curvature seems to have slightly increased with my contact lense fit too- about .3mm). Light sensitivity.
- spasms/pulsing in face and sometimes oddly in throat, seemingly triggered by noise or vibration in car. Slight hardened mass in left cheek below cheek bone which came after this one and a half weeks ago.
- Some clicking in my neck when I bend my head forward or move my head from side to side, also neck stiffness.
- Sometimes a slight burning feeling in my cheeks and around my ears in jaw.
- Twice - a feeling my throat is blocked, as if I have swallowed something and it is stuck.
- It is uncomfortable to turn my head or twist around to look behind me.
- Some aching in face if I talk, or particuarly, smile, a lot.

My symptoms were:
Fullness in right ear, like pressure, when changing alitutude
Ringing in the ear, 24/7 more like screaming
Pain in the ear
Pain, right side of my face, burning
Numbness right side of face, running down jaw line to right corner of lip.
Shoulder/neck pain
Dizziness
Vertigo – queasy stomach when that happens, not an upset stomach, just queasy.
Eye Pain
Sensitive to light
Sensitive to noise
Droopy eye, right eye
Headaches, forehead, all over head
What I thought were sinus headaches
Ghost tooth pain, back upper right, sometimes spreading to lower back teeth but not as strong.
Right lymph feeling swollen sensation
Crackling sound in ear
Crackling sound in neck
Clicking & popping in TMJS after wearing a cheap nightguard.
Brain fog
Watery eye – right one only
Blood shot eye, right one only
Problems with vision in right eye
Temple area pain.
Soft food diet as eating hard things really irritates and makes symptoms worse
Jitters – controlled by no longer taking Tylenol
Shortness of breath
Could no longer suck through a straw (atryphed face muscles)
Exhaustion

The only symptom I now have is being exhausted and it is just about ready to get kicked out the door as well, with my new night time orthotic. During the day I wear a daytime orthotic. It is moving my jaw forward about 4mm. Yahoo! I can not believe how far my Neuromuscular dentist has brought me!
Please, do not give up hope, there is help out there, non surgical, non drug, relief.
I hope this helps
Diane

I have the following still after surgery, so I agree surgery does not cure all your problems.

worn front teeth on the lower arch

neck and shoulder pain

Left ear ringing and fullness. I did not have this prior to surgery.

I know currently have pain in my ears, especially my left ear. It is worse since surgery.

poping/cracking sounds in right jaw-new symptom

opening of 28 mm after surgery

occasional headaches

Prior to surgery I was unable to eat on my right side at all, face pain, opening of probably 18 mm, severe muscle spasms in my right side of my face. I also had the worn teeth on the center bottom arch. I did not have alot of headaches right before my surgery, but I did have many years earlier. I have always had neck problems such as stiffness and poping sounds.

My symptoms are:
headaches: on the bone right above my ear, and pain that radiates through my head all over I have headaches almost every day. I also have fluttering, and pulsing feelings on the sides of my head. Anyone else have these?
neck pain
ear fullness and ringing
eye pain and sometimes see spots
jaw grinding, pain and popping
I think mine is due to stress because I catch myself clinching down on my teeth all the time. I plan on going to the dentist to get fitted for a tmd appliance this week. How much do these cost?
I am sure I have TMD but have not been diagnosed. I was scared for a long time b/c I wasn't sure what was wrong with me. I am sure it is TMD after reading a lot about it on the internet. What do you guys think?

I don't know yet if I have TMJ. Haven't been diagnosed with it but I'm suspecting it. Here's my problems, none of them are really that bad except the last one.

*Recent headaches-I usually NEVER get headaches
*Teeth clenched tightly when sleeping
*Slightly sore jaw
*Slight fullness in ears
*Slight ringing in ears
*Back teeth sort of sore
*Neck and shoulders tight with occasional twinges of pain
*New symptom today: When jaw is opened to fullest I hear a grinding noise (like pop rocks)

but the biggest problem so far...

*A lump feeling or clicking on one side of my throat which happens only when I am swallowing fairly often. Not when I eat food or drink, but only when I swallow dry or swallow saliva. It doesn't hurt per se, but it doesn't feel very comfortable either.

Hello everyone. This is the first time I have looked at this board, and I must tell you, I am amazed. I had no idea TMJ disorder could cause so many symptoms. I feel like you all are my long lost brothers and sisters or something because I can relate to what you are saying. So here is my story, I feel compelled to tell it since now everything is starting to make sense.

I was diagnosed with TMJ disorder about 5 years ago. I have always clenched my teeth, and from there I started getting pain on my right side and then I couldn't open my mouth all the way. I was in my teenage years, and my mom wouldn't believe me that I was in extreme pain. I finally saw an oral/maxillofacial surgeon after years of suffering. My articular disc on my right side had slipped forward and was keeping me from opening my mouth all the way.

So I had an arthrocentisis (spelling?) to flush the disc back into place. From there I got a splint that I wear at night to keep my jaw in alignment when I'm clenching in my sleep. It has been better since then, although I still clench, I have masseter muscle stiffness, ocassional popping in my jaw and still have some pain (the pain is more on the left side though, I think from overcompensating for the right side all those years).

OK-so I thought those were all my TMJ symptoms. But I guess I have MANY others....here they are...

HEADACHES, all the time, forehead, temples, sometimes back of head. Migraines, tension, sinus

-sensitivity to light and noise (often causing a headache)
-can't 'find' my bite
-jaw deviates to the right when I open my mouth
-ocassional swallowing difficulty
-sore throat (attributed to tonsil stones)
-constant clearing of throat
-stiff/painful neck, shoulders, back, poor posture
-and lately stuffy ears that pop when I swallow--this is causing terrible dizziness

Some of this I have attributed to stress, allergies, etc, but I am now starting to see that this may be TMJ related. The worst is the headaches. I think I will make an appointment with my doctor to discuss this.

Thank you all for enlightening me and for listening. Take care!

So familar. Mine is a left only problem.

-Ear pain (the inside of the ear is very sensative to touch with a QTip). This is far and away my worst symptom, and it is with me daily.
-Dizziness/Spacey. I can get particularly dizzy after chewing a lot.

(ear pain and dizziness also occur at a high rate when I do jarring activities, like a lot of walking, treadmill, or volleyball)

-Pain in muscles around jaw (i.e. side of neck, front of neck, back of head)
-Sensativity of noise. Loud, banging sounds will actually make me dizzy and ill.
-Tenderness when swallowing (sometimes)
-Slight pop (left) when opening jaw

To me, it doesn't *feel* like a jaw problem. I don't have any locking problems. All I know is that it's extremely frustrating. However, I feel lucky after reading what some others have gone thru.

My symptoms are as follows:
Vertigo/Dizziness 24/7
Clogged ears mostly the right side. Can hear fluid in there even tho ENT scoped me and said all is normal.
Blurry vision in right eye especially
numbness over upper right quadrant of face comes and goes
Sinus pressure, right sinus is always swollen and closed off and feels numb.
Popping Jaw
Locking Jaw
Crunching Jaw
Any other musical sounds a jaw can make!
Sore neck muscles, and shoulders.
Tingly feelings in arms and fingers.
Feeling of thick mucous in sinus and throat but nothing there.
Tightness of stomach muscles.
Trouble urinating.
C-7 subluxation and nerve compression from bruxing for a long time.
Major evidence of grinding of teeth at night.
Asymetrical face.
Anxiety and Depression

Tried zoloft 6 times, and cant do. It exasperates the dizziness and my Psychiatrist is very insensitive to this issue. I have to lie to my family that I am on it because I am so depressed. I go to a chiropractor and a neuromuscular dentist, both of who I love, and got a splint last week. Hopefully there is an end to this living Hell.
PS: Has anyone tried Klonopin for anxiety over this TMJ hell? Please let me know if it has side effects and if you can enjoy wine drinking in the late afternoon if you take this pill in the AM? One of my cheap thrills is sipping a couple of glasses of wine. Wow, big deal!! TMJ has even stolen that from me.

Hi all-

Amazing that we all share so many of the same symptoms. It's upsetting, but certainly comforting.

One symptom I wanted to address, that I saw a few times on this board was sensitivity to noise. This has been happening to me recently, but only at night. I spoke with a psychiatrist b/c I had been taking anti-anxiety meds on an as needed basis. I figured it was some sort of anxiety.

Can anyone describe in detail exactly what types of noise they are sensitive to and what happens when you hear the noise?

Thank you so much. I appreciate all input.

I am sensitive to alot of noise. My house is right next to a busy road, when I go outside to smoke and the cars drive by it bothers me. Often, in public places, people talking and interacting bother me. I know this sounds weird and crazy. I think the reason I am sensitive to noise should be blamed on the brain fog/spaced out feeling I have 24/7. In the past when I have had a bad cold the brain fog would effect me the same way but it would only last a day or two. I am on day 101 now. I have been on paxil cr for two months, it is just starting to work on my anxiety from all this.
For me anxiety is just another symptom and I bet in the future doctors will stop giving this as a diagnosis and seeing it as a symptom. Anxiety is a stupid and lazy doctors best friend. Well anyway I think the reason I feel so sensitive to certain noises is when they are associated with movement. It is almost like my brain is not seeing what it is hearing at the same time, I register a nanosecond later and if it is a moving object my brain tell me it is not right, something is wrong and anxiety starts to sit in.
I dont know if this is how anyone else sees it and I am not that good at describing things, so I am sorry if this confuses you more, I am sure the way your feeling is confusing enough.

I have experienced many of the symptons described by tmj sufferers, but during the last few days they have been a bit different. I hope they are from the tmj and not some other serious medical problem. I can't say it is a headache but rather pain in my head. Just on one side at the temple and a bit higher. It comes and goes, but usually when I chew something even ever so slightly I get the pain referred to these areas. I have had it now for 2 days. If I just lay still and relax it is not bad but if I move a certain way or chew I have this pain in my temple and up to the top of my head. Does anyone else have this problem? I thought I might have had a real night of teeth clentching and this has trigger it off. It is a weird pain that I have not experienced before. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. I went to a walkin clinic today, but it was closing and they would not see me. I will see how I am tomorrow.
