Just out of curiousity (sp?),
Do any of you know how TMJ is caused? I know the whole thing about well if you grind your teeth and clenching, but I mean do they REALLY know how TMJ is caused? When you clench and/or gring does it make your disks slip or something?? I wonder about this...

I was told by my neuro dentist that my tmj problems are a result of whiplash (car accident) and a couple of abusive relationships many years ago. He also said there is no indication that I grind my teeth. I think that stress has alot to do with it for me because I tend to carry all my stress in the neck muscles.

TMJ can be caused by injury to the joint by accident and/or trauma, as well as dental problems such as a bad bite or clenching your teeth. Mine was made worse by having my wisdom teeth removed, which has contributed to more serious problems relating to balance disorders, dizziness, and swelling of tissue in my face around the joint.

I was told that my case was caused by grinding/clenching. My surgeon told me that it stretches out the ligament that holds the disc in place.
Have you thought about checking out any books on TMJD from your library or checking out the books available online from bookstores? I have found the more I understand about the illness the better I feel.

no one has really been able to give me a straight answer as to why i have TMJD. some say there may have been a trauma while others say that it's because i have an underdeveloped mandible and maxilla, which has caused strain on my TMJs. as well, i clench and grind.

Yes I noticed I had pains before my wisdoms were removed, but once they were removed I gradually felt more pain that worsened and is still worsening
