I was wondering if this could help us. Last night I was thinking how the splint works. If TMJD is caused by clinching our grinding your teeth that means you would have to breath through your nose. If you were to plug your nose and breath through your mouth would'nt you be less inclined to clinch or grind. Just a thought some of you may have allready thought or tried this.

it's actually "bad" to breathe thru your mouth all of the time. it strains the muscles around your throat and can cause other problems during sleeping - you get less oxygen and whatnot. i dont think that mouth breathing reduces clenching and grinding since i do both, and ive been a lifelong mouth-breather. i didnt realize that it was abnormal until i recently saw my new dentist.

if a child is a mouthbreather, their palate may not form correctly, too, i believe.

I agree with sarah that breathing through your mouth is generally a bad idea. I've read it can cause strain and muscle tension also. Hope you're feeling take care.
