WOW, how did you figure out all those measurments? Dentist? Mine did not do that for me!!!

Ear ;)

P.S what is an overjet? My dentist told me I had one of those with a measurement of over 5mm.

I really wish I had taken the time to write mine down for comparison as the dentist said it had gotten smaller since the last apt...he also said that if I didn't get my act together (ha, like I have some sort of control over this?) that I would have to be sedated and my jaw pried open anytime I had to have any sort of dental proceedure...even teeth cleaning! This is the tmj dentist I stopped going to BTW!

My daughter and I both have our annual cleaning apts next Tuesday...I am wondering if I should even go right now or wait awhile? Any advice on that???

Ear,
My opening has been 5 mm , 10 mm for quite a while after surgeries, 19 to 24 for many years. Physical Therapy and Theraputic Massage helped me stay between 19 & 24. Even with these therapies, it was a battle. I was back down to 19 mm when I started my splint therapy. I am at a little over 32 mm with my current splint. This may be it for me with no disc, but I am completely happy at 32 mm. I can talk without problems and eat many things that I could not before.

Elaine,
19 was a misery. 10 is a horrible way to live. I know.
I pray for you and anyone else who is living this way to find help. :(

mama,
you can buy a small plastic metric ruler, similiar to what the Dentists use or use a regular ruler and make a pretty accurate conversion.

I would not let them sedate me and pry my mouth open.
Many people have developed TMJD after procedures when their mouth was held open too wide, too long. My Dentist has always had someone who could clean with a very slight opening. I've also had other Dental work done with barely any opening at all. (Thay can make your condition worse.)
Just my opinion.

Ear-Pain:
Started at 55mm. Looks like it has decreased with splint treatment!!!!

Elaine:
I feel very sad about what you have been through. I hope something comes up that will improve your situation.

Your opening has decreased with splint treatment? I thought it was supposed to increase? How are you doing with your treatment otherwise? What does your doctor say? TMJ sure sounds hard to treat.

ouch - i believe that overjet refers to an overbite.. otherwise [crudely] known as "buckteeth".

what does it mean if you have a normal opening? does it have anything to do with TMJ being a muscular or joint problem? or does it mean i only have a mild case of TMJ despite other symptoms?

I have a normal opening, I even wondered if my jaw could be hypermobile but the maxillo facial surgeon I saw said no, it looks normal. I do recently feel my jaw is going slightly to the left when I open my mouth though, not sure if I'm imagining this.

However I have a clicking right joint and I think the disc there may be just starting to move or get stuck because it isn't quite smooth feeling when I open my mouth though I can open it to normal width. I was told my problems are muscular, but also the lab interpretation of my tomographs said something about there being slight differences in the joint space (I think, a friend picked them up and read this and then the dr didn't mention it to me so I'm really not sure, I need to collect them and see another professional too really as I am too unclear about what is actually happening with me).
