Here are some helpful tips/hints to look for when
you go to a tmj dentist-specialist

First of all they may say they are a "specialist" and are
not even qualified to put in a filling.Make sure of their credentials in this field and of course someone who will listen and not rush you out of the office.

A good diagnosis and exam is important this may include
xrays, tomographs, mri if a dislocation/joint damage is questioned.

An evaluation form to fill out describing your symptoms
One approved by the ADA is recommended which is filled out by you and then rated.

After the evaluation a good treatment plan should be discussed with you along with a written evaluation and treatment summary done by the tmj dentist. EG, splint therapy, etc.,

Everyone please feel free to add to this list....

Hi Pinky!,
My "so called TMJ dentist" did none of this for me. I think it was because he was an orthodontist! Thanks for putting this list up! Now I will know what to look for when I do find a TMJ specialist!

Great!!! Im glad this helps!!!
Anyone else out there feel free to add to it.
Also I forgot to add that he should also be able
to "read" the xrays/mri's accurately in order to
properly diagnose and treat you. Even though the xray
technicians give them a report of their findings it is
important that the tmj dentist can read it also.
My dentist was so particular that he ordered another
technician to rewrite it.

Also credential are very important,
find out if they studied this disorder,
are they upto date with their studies,
are they on any tmj/craniofacial organizations,
and what percent of their practice is tmj related.

i always ask for copies of my xrays [and mri], so i can study my own body. :) plus, it's so cool to see the inner workings. i find it interesting to compare my xrays to online "normal" ones.

oh, and i find that the doctors really love it when i bring in my [extensive] medical hisotry. i have kept track of every treatment since i was 7 related to my headaches/migraines/TMJD, and have created a spreadsheet with all of the info. i also included all of the health professionals' names and addresses.

Hi Ouch:
I am being treated by an orthodontist for my TMJ and he did do the things listed by Pinky. I think the problem was not that the guy you saw was an orthodontist but rather that he was just a lousy practioner period. I have seen many lousy practioners before finding this orthodontist to treat me.
