HI,
ON Sept 19th i went to the dentist to have two wisdom teeth removed. one was upper right, the other lower left. When i arrived at the dentist i had to wait because they said they had a lot of walk ins. when they finally saw me they injected me with novacaine, and i felt a sharp "lightening" type feeling in my tongue, and started shaking. i told them this but they continued with the extraction strarting with the upper tooth, which came out easily.
they proceeded to the bottom, and started attempting removal, and THE POWER WENT OUT! i had to sit the and wait to see if it went back on, but after about an hour they sewed me up with someone holding a flashlight, and sent me home.
they would not see me again until that next tuesday Sept 23rd. i was in extruciating pain, and the same happened with the novacaine (lightening feeling in tongue and shaking). the extraction was long and painful, and i felt like my jaw was going to be dislocated my how far that had it opened. he also put the mirror in my mouth in a way that made me feel like i was gonna choke.
okay, so after the removal, they gave me the tooth and sent me home. i was in terrible pain, and after a few days realized that my tongue was numb, and i can barely open my mouth. i went back for two packings, and all he said regarding this is that it can take up to 6-8 weeks for the numbness to go away or longer.
i am still numb in half my tongue, and my lower left inside. i can still barely open my jaw, and have pain in my jaw on that side if i try and open it further that it can go. i have bad headaches, and i feel like i have an ear infection and swollen gland on that side, numbness in my hands, as well as difficulty swollowing. also i noticed a ball or knot in front and slightly below my ear on the other side. when i called the dentist about this, he says again, it could take months.
because of the fact that i have no pain at the tooth site, and its healed, i am concerned that i will not be able to open my jaw fully again without some type of help, and my numbness may be permanent. i am scared, and upset.
i called my doctor who will not see me. also i was on antibiotics from like the beginning of september because i had a chest cold.
please someone tell me what to do?
Thanks

This sounds like it could be damage/bruising to the Lingual and Inferior Alveolar nerve. Not to panic, it is not permanent in most cases but as the dentist said it can take long to heal. I had this same experience with a novacaine injection -the lightening electric shock feeling. The subsequent pain caused me to begin clenching which brought me to this board. If you do not feel better soon, I would consult a neurologist experienced in this type of pain. Usually oral surgeons know of some-that is where I got my referral. I am sorry to hear of your pain, I know it is very difficult and frightening. Deb

Is that also why i can't fully open my mouth?

well, the numbness in the tongue is the nerve problem.
I am not sure about the jaw though. Sorry. Perhaps they strained muscles overextending during the extraction. I hope you feel better soon.

OMG, reading this made my blood boil. This dentist sounds like a real quack. Perhaps you should contact a different dentist and go in and see them regarding this pain you are in. If you have to have any more wisdom teeth extracted I would suggest you go to a oral surgeon and be put to sleep for the procedure. That's what I did when I had my wisdom teeth extracted. It's much easier on you and probably on them too. I would NEVER trust a dentist to do extractions.
I am so sorry you are in such pain and in such fear. No freaking dentist has the right to treat any person like this one treated you. This just makes me so irate. Hang in there.

I went to the dentis today. The first things he said when he walked in the room was "TMJ huh? I think you need a vacation to the Islands". which made me smile, although i wanted to cry. He gave me an x-ray (the kind that circles your head, and sent me to the oral surgeon thats next door. Before sending me over he said it looks like there was ALOT of drilling on my jaw, and asked if i was numb.
When i went next door, he measured how much i can open, and felt around and asked me about my pain and numbness. he said that at the least i have really bad muscle tension, which isnt allowing the muscle to relax and give me full jaw motion, and at the worst a jaw infection, which would be a long hard road ahead for recovery.
i admitted to him that i havent been doing the heat thing. so he said to do that 3 times daily for 20 minutes, and take motrin every four hours with food (soft of course), not a lot of talking and so forth. i have an appointment next monday, and i hope that i show improvement, and that it isnt really an infection. i was talking antibiotics since the beginning of september, so its weird to me that i could have gotten an infection, but i think that may be what it is.
i will keep you posted with my progress, and anything i learn.
Thanks :)

Okay I have another question...I read a post in hear regarding massages inside the mouth, so i washed my hands and went on in :). The joint on the painful side is so tight, that at first i thought that the dentist sewed me up too tight and thats why it hurts and i cant open it (i work third shift and was yawning ALL night, the worst pain), but i guess its the muscle right (it feels like a ROCK on that side)? also, when i massage there (jaw hinge inside) i feel something on my tongue where its numb, like its connected or i'm on a nerve (it doesnt hurt). do these things sound familiar to anyone? i am going back to the dentist on monday, and want to explain to him how it feels, and also am trying to figure out the way to tell him motrin does NOTHING for me, maybe something else will help me improve. Also i had a 22mm opening when he measured.
i just feel like my head is a big ball of knots, but yesterday the weirdest thing happened. i put the hot water bottle on my face and layed down, and knocked right out and slept better that i have in a month! it felt so good. its bad because i work third shift, so not only is the pain giving me insomnia, but people in my house make alot of noise all day, so i'm lucky to get like 5 hours.
i appreciate any comments :D

WOW - THAT STORY SOUNDS SO FAMILIAR. MY DENTIST TOOK OUT AN IMPACTED WISDOM TOOTH IN THE OFFICE AND I WATCHED HIM SLIDE ACROSS THE FLOOR AS HE PULLED. HE WANTED THE WISDOM TOOTH OUT BEFORE JANUARY BECAUSE MY NEW INSURANCE WOULD KICK IN SOON. HE ALSO SAID I HAD A SMALL CAVITY IN THE BACK THAT HE WOULD FIX LATER. I WENT TO A NEW DENTIST YESTERDAY AND HE SAID I HAVE NO CAVITIES WHAT SO EVER AND MY TEETH IN THE BACK HAVE SEALANTS ON THEM SO I CAN'T EVEN GET A CAVITY IN THE BAck THE XRAYS SHOW NO CAVITIES AT ALL. SOUNDS TO ME LIKE MY OLD DENTIST JUST WANTED INSURANCE PAYMENTS TO COLLECT ON. AND I CAN'T PROVE HE WAS AT FAULT. I WALK IN FINE AND WALK OUT DISLOCATED AND LOCKED UP - GOOD LUCK WE ALL NEED IT

I went to the dentist yesterday, and it seems he's already tired and done with me :(. he told me if i wanted something other than motrin to go to my general dr (who wont help me, i already tried), because he doesnt "believe" in that. he just felt around in my mouth a little bit with a q-tip, didnt ask me if i felt anything, didnt measure me or anything. after i begged and begged he gave me a script for vioxx, and flexeril. after telling me that i may never open my mouth fully i just cried and left.
bad day yesterday :), but pain better today :D

I just want to say... Don't believe that. One of the doctor I saw told me that my jaw would always pop when I opened my mouth. After about 2 months of splint therapy, my popping is almost gone. It does happen sometimes, but nowhere near as much.
God totally has the power to heal you. I believe that with all my heart. If God can cure leprosy, he can heal my jaw.
(sorry, I am not meaning to preach or anything, that is just how I feel. I don't want to offend anybody)
Take care,
Sarah
