My husband has been having trouble maintaining an erection for about six months now. It is really eating at his self esteam and he has expressed interest in going to the doctor. What type of dr. should he go to? Will a family dr be ok or should he see a specialist? If a specialist is necessary which kind? What kinds of test should he expect or ask for? I dont want a doctor who is just going to put him on Viagra or some other wonder drug. We want to find out what the underlying problem is. Thanks for any info.

He needs to go to a urologist. The doctor will probably run some tests on his blood to check his hormone level. At least temporarily, he may put your husband on Viagra.

I would go to your family doctor first. He will give your husband a physical which will include an EKG to verify if there are any heart conditions and a testosterone check as well. He may then perscribe a sample for your husband to use. It's worth it. I know at first it feels a little embarrasing but if he is truly having erection problems, go see your family doctor first.

yes his own dr will perhaps take a blood sample for analysis, erectile disfunction can even be caused by something as simple as stress, his dr could perhaps refer him to a specialist for further tests.
