I've heard so many different things about vitamin C and how much is safe to take. Is 500mg once a day ok?

Yeah, you will find a WIDE range of opinions on vitamin dosages. I also take about 1,000-1,500 m.g. a day; and kick it up by about 500-1,000 m.g. a day when I am starting not to fell well or am stressed out.

Most people have to consume even more than this before it becomes TOO much, because excess vitamin C gets thrown off by the body pretty well.

Thanks so much for your responses! I have another question if you don't mind. I take a multi-vitamin pill everyday, (it only has 60mg of vitamin C in it). Is it safe for me to take the extra vitamin C pills too? I just want to make sure. Thanks again!

Hi,
Vitamin C is not made by your body. All animals except a South American monkey and a guinea pig produce Vit.C in their livers. Reptiles produce Vit.C in their Kidneys. We humans have to intake it daily because we do not have the 4 necessary enzymes to convert some food to vit C --we are missing one of the enzymes. The 60 mgs put in many multi-vits is the Recommended Daily Allowance so you don't get a vitamin-deficiency disease called scurvy. Vit C is a water soluble vitamin and what your body does use is eliminated in your urine. The best kind available is Ester C---the only vitamin I know that is patented. 99% of the over the counter Vitamin C in made from corn. Taking Extra Vitamin C is really a good health thing to do. There are Books written about the benefits of taking Vitamin C.
Take Care---Harry

Years ago I started taking extra Vit C because I heard it was good for Rheumatoid Arthritis. I just know that I haven't had any bad colds in years. I know C doesn't stop colds, but it does lessen the severity. It also helps to ward off UTI's, which I seemed to be getting more frequently when I started going through Menopause. I take 1,500 mgs. daily.
