I'll give this one a shot. I had been using Serzone for my depression for 8 months without any improvement. The more I read and educated myself I realized the answer came in changing my lifestyle and not depending on "masking" the symptoms with pharmecuticals.

I tapered off the medication and began eating much better. Less alcohol, fast food, etc. At any rate, a B-complex vitamin with 50mg/50mcg of each B vitamin is a great start. Add 500-1000mgs of vitamin C each day and you are off to a great start. Don't forget a good daily multivitamin/mineral. Other than that, don't get too carried away with vitamins. Eat a balanced diet with plenty of your favorite fruits and vegetables along with other good tasting yet nutritious foods and you'll see some dramatic improvements. Good luck.

Cutting out all wheat helps me tremendously (and refined carbohydrates in general). Also eating some protein at every meal (at least 15 grams, 3 meals a day).

I used to suffer from depression, but no longer! I tackled mine with a better diet. The two major neurotransmitters involved in preventing depression are serotonin and norepinephrine. Both of these need proper care. Serotonin is coverted from the amino acid L-tryptophan and Norepinephrine is converted from L-Phenylalanine. An appropriate diet for Serotonin would be 500mg L-tryptophan, 50mg B6, 1000mg Vitamin C, and 500mg Niacin, the same holds true for Neropinephine only substituting the L-tryptophan with L-tyrosine. Luckily you can find all the vitamins, minerals and amino acids you need to care for these neurotransmitters in a multivitamin called "SEA SILVER". I've been taking this product for 7-8 months now, with fantastic results. It's also a good idea to stay away from sugar, alcohol, white flour and rice, these foods take away to many vitamins for processing and give nothing back to the body. Foods you should be eating included, AMIO ACID SUPPLEMENTS!!, raw and steamed vegetables, fruit, brown rice, beans, skinless chicken, turkey, and fish. Fish oil is also great.

Life is so much better when you eat healthy!

Look into 5-HTP. I know this is an amino acid builder and helps raise the serotonin levels in your brain. Imbalance of serotonin is usally the cause of depression. You can get it at any GNC store. However, I have not done any research to see if it has harmful side effects, so you may want to ask around or do research first, or see what natural foods will raise these acid and serotonin levels. I do know from experience it can give you hot flashes.

Good luck,
Rob

GABA (gamma amino butyric acid) has changed my life. I take 1,000 mg a day. I've also found fish oil (1,000 mg a day) to be helpful.

Try fish oil. I have friends that say they get to depressed without it. Its one of the good fats that our diets are lacking. I have even read in some of my books, that they think EVERYONE should take fish oil.
It really helps the brain work better.

Hey Nerfhead,
Just wondering if you can also buy the SEA Silver at GNC. If not, where did you find it? Would Walmart carry it? THanks a lot!

As far as any vitamin or amino being of any help with depression (or anything else), it will only be so if your system happens to be depleted of that specific thing, making it a factor in our depression. If you're not really in need of whatever it is that you decide to take, even mega doses won't make a difference. The problem is, how do you know if you need something like this. Supplementing with the proper vitamins and amino acids that are lacking has been shown to be effective in such people for some relief of depression.
