Starting a new thread as the other one is so long.
How is the Atkins crew this morning? Please let me know-there are so many I haven't heard from lately :(
I will complete the first week of induction today!
I feel great and the scale is really starting to move.
Which brings me to my question- What type of scales are you guys using? I had an old fashioned kind of scale and went and bought a digital scale. I know that my old scale was a little off but compared to my new one is was very off! So, now I have really no idea how much weight I have lost! Are you finding the digital scales are a good way to go? Or did I just waste my money!

I bought the Digital Scale but wasn't happy with it because it was too inaccurate. The Healthometer Professional scale was was suggested. I bought it a year ago and so far it is accurate. Even when it shows that I have gained it is right. My weight is the same at home and in the doctors office.

Well I hope I haven't made a mistake. I paid a lot for it. Hopefully some of our other Atkins friends will share what they are using as well. Hint, Hint...

Hiya friends! :)
I'm not sure whether this is the appropriate place for me to pop in to ask my question, because I'm not on Atkins exactly, but I do watch my carb balance pretty closely. So here's what I'm wondering:
I'm experiencing a good deal of gastro upset/pain lately, from lots of painful churning and lower-abdomen bloating, to what feels like trapped intestinal gas. LOL, sorry if that's a little more than you wanted to know.
The only dietary change I've made is a bit of extra fiber, high Splenda intake (Diet Rite, coffee/tea, cooking). I've also experimented with some low-carb pre-packaged items (Atkins muffin mix, Keto hot cereal/pancake mix, La Tortilla Factory tortillas, Boca burgers, etc.) ALL of which contain lots and lots of soy. I don't tolerate veggies like lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower well, so I don't eat them...so I know it's not that sort of issue.
Any ideas/experiences/opinions with these products, gals? Could it be the soy, or is it more likely something else, like the artificial sweetener (although I thought Splenda wouldn't cause an upset), or something else altogether?
Thanks ladies if ya have any input. ;)

I know what you mean about those scales. You rely on them so much to tell you if you are progressing and the slightest bit of weight change can make such a difference in my mood for the day. I bought a digital scale from sharper image, and it always seems to be off. I don't know of any good ones for the home, but if you go to the gym they usually have the ones like they have at the doctor's office. I think of these as the most reliable.

HI
Well, I made it through another cheat free day...NUMBER 7 http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dance.gif
Xia-the bloated feeling could be caused from the fiber. If that is the only changes you have made. I dont really have an answer for ya. Sorry. :(
GG-my scales are some 5 dollar scales from walmart. So i go workout and see how much I weigh fully clothed then come home and set them. LOL To my surprise they were off by 1/2 lb. So I really weigh 101 1/2.
I am suppose to go to the Doctor Thursday but dont know if I will cause a big uproar when I refuse to get on the scales. I get on the ones that I am used to...and I hate doctors scales. Also w/ me still getting over an eating disorder I dont think I should be getting on too many different scales. Ya know. i seriously try and stay off of them for fear of something in my brain triggering a relapse. I dont want that.
well I have to run..let me know of any suggestions I can give the doctor Thursday.

although I am not in your group I enjoy reading all the different posts on weight loss. On the scale topic I use a triple beam scale or what you would call a doctors scale which can be calibrated to less than 1/4 lb off. My boys used this when they were in the wrestling program in high school and had to be very accurate with their weight for weigh ins. I believe it ran about 175 dollars and was worth every penny. Ive had it for 10 years now. As for the atkins diet, I started it on dec15 and to date have lost 28 lbs. I understand that your not suppose to weigh yourself everyday, but it was motivational for me. In fact I weighed myself about 3 or 4 times a day-lol Any ways I started out at 258lbs and today I am at 230lbs with a goal of being at my visionquest of 210 by june. Ive dropped two pant sizes from a 42 to a loose 38. Good luck to you all on this diet- it works even when you fall off on a cheat day every now and then like I do!! Starting tomorrow I am going back into the induction phase to start my final phase up , for about 3 weeks. Keep up all the good informative posts that I enjoy reading!!!

Xia - I'm betting its the increase in fiber. Keep up with the changes and I think you'll notice the discomfort dissipating in a few days. Your body just needs to adjust. Next time, add the fiber in more slowly to avoid this problem.
GG - Don't look at it as a waste of money. Instead, determine your starting weight for THIS scale and try to avoid weighing on the older scale, or any other scale! ALL scales are different. Heck, just moving your scale from one type of floor to another could change the reading. Use your scale to judge trends (are you basically losing or basically gaining) vs. a be all end all measurement of your weight.

Hi,
Well so far so good. Day number 8 no cheats. And i have had so far...11 grams of carbs today.
I only have 6 more days of induction then maybe I will be able to incorperate some sort of fruit in my diet.
But I did workout and am really enjoying it.
I have a doctors appt. Thursday to see about some sort of birth control. So wish me luck getting on those darn scales.

It will be awhile before I try the spin, it looks really hard! LOL! We have a bally's down the street from us but we knew some people that were going to the 24 hour fitness and really liked it.
They have a really nice room for the kids and my little boy had such a good time playing with the other kids.

Just curious, I am considering atkins, still...
Do you guys count calories? I mean, I am jusr afraid with all of the meats/cheeses, etc... that my weight will go up b/c they are higher in calories. I am in pretty good physical health now (especially since I just quit smoking) but I am at a plateau right now and thats why I was considering atkins... Any thoughts...?

okay, this will sound stupid but here it goes...
Just for example, if I wanted to sit here and eat almonds all morning, could I do that without having to worry about the calories and the salt? I normally eat so low fat that I am scared to start eating less carbs b/c I know it means I will be eating many more calories... I am very interested to try it though.

Hey all,
The end of today will be the completion of my first week on induction. I believe i've lost some weight, I can feel it.
I'm glad to see you are all doing well. I am very tempted to start weighing myself to see my progress..I think I will weigh myself tomorrow morning, and see where i'm at so to speak.. so at the end of the second week on induction, i'll know if I lost anything that week. I have what I think is a health-o-meter digital scale. I've had it away in my closet so long I don't remember what brand it is.. haha.

Hi cocacola,
Okay first you need to worry about salt intake..because that will make you retain fluids. So if you could eat unsalted peanuts or almonds then that would be fine. You would not count the calories. But if you are interested in doing Atkins properly know that you need to eat meats like, chicken, beef, fish, pork etc...and most of your carbs will come from you leafy vegetables. Also all those peanuts will make you go to the bathroom..well, they did me. lol
Imarebelspy-congrats on the week of induction...let us know how it goes when you weigh yoursel. :)

Don't some of you all sometimes gather at a place where you can meet "low carb friends" or other "atkins friends"?
Have you been having trouble getting there lately? Or is it just me?

Hey Everyone!!
I enjoy reading your messages and getting ideas. I started the Atkins diet and was kind of doing o.k. But then a nurse mentioned it was totally bad for the heart and arteries and also it was totally against the cancer prevention diets. I got scared and quit! Can anyone help me with this??
I really did lose 6lbs. the first week and then I stopped. Once I had a weekend of regular eating I gained it all back :(
Any help????

Hi Guys, it's day number 3 for me on Atkins. I have already lost 3 lbs. since Monday but today I woke up feeling nauseous and weak. Sinnrah you seem to be having great success with this. Tell me how you do it. I haven't been able to exercise because I feel to weak. I would like to be able to shake up my diet by atleast having a shake in the morning or an Advantage bar or something. I have heard that some people say that those are off limits during induction, but Dr. Atkins says it's ok in his book, I think. Anyway, this is somewhat difficult because I am lacking in energy so much. I just feel like if I could have a nice big bowl of cereal than I would regain some energy back. What do you guys suggest?
Oh and what about sweets? I know we are supposed to stay away from that but my gosh going all day without anything sweet makes it really bad. Last night, I just had some decaf tea with a packet of Splenda and I that worked for the most part. I guess I'm just looking for other ideas. Thank you :)

I DID IT...I DID IT...I DID IT...I DID IT...I DID IT..
I made my goal...for the time being anyways!! I stepped on the scale this morning and there it was, staring at me! I haven't seen those numbers in almost 10 years!! WOW! I set out in November to lose 23 lbs. by April....
Even though I got to where I wanted to be, now I have to learn to stay in control so I can stay where I am! One thing I've learned: you can do anything you set your mind to and to believe in yourself.
P.S. I started Atkins Nov. 13, 2002....

GRACIE ~ I celebrated last night with some olive oil popped popcorn...not a lot, but enough to say "at a girl". It was soooo good! My only game plan I have is to not fall prey to the "well, I made my goal, THIS can't hurt" attitude and start stuffing my mouth with carb-rich foods. I know what it took to get to where I am, and I know how hard it was to get here. Do I want to do that again? I don't think so!! Once was enough! Well, actually, this is my second time around....the first time 2 years ago when I lost 10 lbs., I thought that was all there was to it......I didn't change my eating style after I lost the weight and all the weight came back, plus some. That was so depressing!! I don't want to follow that road again!

I know what it took to get to where I am, and I know how hard it was to get here. Do I want to do that again? I don't think so!! Once was enough!
