Every single Thursday and Friday night I go out to either a party or the bar and drink with friends. I don't get drunk much but I know that alcohol is a lot of calories and I am not sure how to go about this without ruining my diet. I also do not want to not drink at all. I was thinking if I could just eat a lot less and cut down on my drinking each night coming out with about 1300 calories total with the food and alcoholic beverages for the days I drink, do you guys think that would work? Would I still lose weight? Please let me know what u all think. Oh and is it better to drink lite beer or coconut rum with diet coke- I really do not like beer but if it is better I could try changing my mind.

Hi Trinket,

I have struggled with this question in my own quest to be healthy and lose weight. It isn't an easy one!!

-Lite beer is ok.. about 100 cals.
-Standard rum and coke is about 160 cals, but coconut rum has more sugar in it, so it's probably higher.
-Wine isn't a bad idea either at 80-100 cals a glass.
-A shot of most liquor is usually around 70-100 cals, then adding soda and juice... and you have a meal in calories.

On days I know I will be having a few drinks, I eat mostly veggies and proteins, keeping my calories down. I also always have a glass of water by me with my cocktail, so I don't drink my cocktail as fast, I try to alternate with the water.

Occasional drinking isn't bad. A glass of beer or wine everyday is actually said to be good for you.

Don't forget that alcohol will also cause water retention, especially beer. Wine is less high in calories, but higher in alcohol content - you might drink less. Another option is club soda/seltzer. If at a bar, get it in glass w/lime and you will feel like you have a drink in your hand, but NO CALORIES.

I really am not sure I ever tried club soda before. I still like the taste of an actual drink. I wish there was a low calorie alcohol out there. Would solve my problems for sure.

drinking on the weekends....love it, miss it, wish i were drunk now, LOL! but back to reality, i am at work.

try vodka and seltzer w/ lime? i don't think vodka is that bad in cals, but i could be wrong.

good luck on finding the perfect bev.

I never even tried a seltzer before. Would that taste ok with something as strong as vodka? I could try it. I did find out most bars around here have Diet Sierra Mist so I have been having that with Malibu rum or Rasberry UV vodka. I still never found out how many calories or carbs either of these shots have. I have been looking online forever and find nothing! If anyone knows, please let me know. I just really am worried that I am drinking more than I know.

I agree with the person who said Vodka. It's some strong stuff and isn't too bad on calories.

Also there is a god light beer by Michelob that is lower is carbs/calories. That one is pretty good too.

It's only Weds. and all ready you have me thinking about the beer I will have on Friday, lol... sad, sad, sad...

LOL, you girls have me pegged too. The same thoughts are swimming thru my head. I also dont drink during the week but watch out on the weekends. The only issued ive had as of yet, is when you low carb and overload proteins, ive heard the metabolism is such that you can drink as much, you get there quicker.....Ive found this true since starting atkins. I cannot drink as much without carbs. Not that that has discouraged me, lOl, no way. I tried the Michelob Ultra, as I drink beer, but Im not too fond of the taste. Im a budlight, corona gal. :-)
Cheers to all

Another trick that allows you to drink less, while still enjoying a night out is to drink a glass of water between every alcoholic beverage. This will make you less likely to have a hangover (no dehydration here) and will slow down your consumption of alcohol. Of course, you'll have to pee all night, but it does work.

If you eat less on the days that you drink and keep your drinking to a minimum, you will still lose weight. It might be a little slower, but it will come off.

HI Cocacola, Newme and Chelle. Thank you for your posts. I always drink water when I remember to inbetween each drink. Sometimes I sorta forget though once I am really having fun. =) oops!

I have a hard time drinking just plain vodka but I really like the UV vodka, prob is that it just really hits me hard. I am so used to drinking light drinks like diet coke with malibu rum. Sometimes I switch it up a notch and have jack with diet coke but that can really make me drunk too if I drink too many. I am thinking maybe I am better off getting a drink with higher alcohol content that does not taste like sugar though because then I for sure know there are no carbs in it at least. But they don't taste as good that is for sure and I sure would have to watch my limit then. I hate getting real drunk. I rarely get that way. A nice buzz is good enough! lol That is what the malibu diet cokes and a shots of tequila here and there do anyway.

I still wish I could find the calorie content of the malibu rum and UV vodka though to see. If there were no carbs I woud be much more content. It is not like I am even following a low carb diet. I just don't like the idea of having more than 150 carbs in a day.

I don't mind the Michelob Ultra light but I found out Miller Light is just as low almost and I like the taste of that more. I guess Bud Light has the highest calorie and carb intake but I have that once in awhile still because it does not give me a headache at least.

I have been still losing weight but it is not as fast as it could be. I really want to be pretty thin by June if possible. I am not about to wear shorts with fat legs THIS summer! If anyone has the perfect drink while dieting, or calorie content and carbs of any coconut rum or Flavored Vodka's let me know! Thanks

Hi Esperanza!

So far I lost about 30lbs in 3 months by calorie counting and exercising. I make sure I have 1000 to 1599 calories a day and I try to keep my carb intake below 150 grams a day. I also try to keep my fat intake about 20% to 30% per day. I use fitday.com to work this all out. I think if I just did the calorie counting it would work fine, I just like to really get into things once I get going. I think it is fun for some reason. I have been having about 2 to 3 days at about 1550 calories and then the other days of the week are about 1000 calories to 1200 at the most. I also go on my stationary bike with moving handle bars 3 to 4 times a week for 30 to 40 minutes and I make sure to have a vigorous workout. I drink 2 cups of green tea every other day lately and then have one flintstone vitamin everyday, but thats about it for supplements. I do have bad days here and there where I have over 2000 calories but I try to make up for them. I do go out drinking with friends twice a week and that does count as calories so I just can't eat as much that night. One or sometimes both of those two drinking nights are usually a high 1550 calorie day and then plus Sunday usually is a high day too because my husband and I eat out that night and then we go to my parents house and they have lots of candy dishes full of bite size candy bars there and I know I am going to have some of them so I just expect it. Anyway, this is working for me but it is a slow process because I give myself lots of leeway. If I would stop drinking for the rest of my diet, I am sure it would help me lose faster, but I can't seem to give it up so I figure I might as well stick to a diet that I can do for the rest of my life even if it takes awhile to lose the weight. Right now I am losing pretty slowly but I guess it is one, or sometimes two pounds a week which is actually the healthy amount to lose in a week. I still wish I could be thin RIGHT NOW! LOL

Trinket - you are my hero and inspiration!

Thanks for that site by the way, I have been using it for the past 3 days and this has allowed me to substitute some of Jenny Craig's stuff for my own food - I want to become independent, but knew I needed to relearn alot. This message board is wonderful in that I have become inspired by all those success stories and even the "sticktoit" attitude, and of course touched by those like yourself who really do care.
I enjoy my wine and movies with hubby on the weekends, so like this weekend when I had company, I was very careful about my intake and allowed myself the pleasure of wine and still didn't go over 1500 calories. I am like you, if I have to give up the pleasure of eating, please don't take away my pleasure of wine.
Keep us posted - you are such an inspiration.

Wow, thanks for the very nice compliment. I feel good that I can be a "hero and inspiration" to you. Your words are going to make me do even better when I feel like giving up. You really made my day. Thanks a lot! I am glad you are using fitday.com. It helps me a lot.

I have the web site i think u have been looking for. Its www.sotallytober.com (http://www.sotallytober.com) and there is a spot where u can calculate calories...its under in the deptartment section to the left bar enclyclopedia and there's a section to calcualte calories and just find out a whole shat load of information on different drinks. It helped me! hope it helps. And also, Ive been struggling with the same issues with keeping to my diet yet sticking to my fun with drinking. So far, drinking miller lites, mandarin(absolut vodka) and soda with an orange twist (or lime) and my glasses of red wine have let me keep my weight coming off. Cuz if u think about it, a TBSN of mayo can equal one lite beer calorie and carb wise. I think I dont feel so guilty drinking lite beer when i put it all into perspective! And diet cokes with a shot is 100 calories as well. I think there arent carbs in hard alcholhol, actually I know this b/c I got the carb counter booklet from atkins. So all u have to worry about is the calories (which is not terribly too much) and what u mix it with. Hope I helped!

HI Grape and Cocacolagirl,

Grape, thank you so much for the web site and your advice. I found the part that said calories but it doesn't list much. Where is the calculator part? I can't seem to find it. Is red wine a lot of calories? I am going to having more diet soda with an orange or lemon slice or maybe try that absolute orange vodka drink you get. I get a rasberry UV vodka drink all the time with water or Diet 7up. It is pretty good. I think I am going to try to drink more lite beer too here and there because the problem with me is mostly that the drinks are real tall around here and I really have no idea how many shots are getting poured into each drink. The bartenders don't measure out shots or anything. They just pour! The drinks are filled with ice though but I still have no clue. I always calculate about 3 shots a drink if they are tall or 1 to 2 shots if it is a short glass. Do you think that sounds fair?

Cocacolagirl, I know what you mean. It is my biggest battle right now. I am losing so slowly lately and it is getting so frustrating because when I drink a lot I barely get to eat and I starve! I really am thinking about just going out one day a week for awhile instead of two. That way I can see if it is really the drinking slowing things down. I really wanted to lose 30 more pounds by June 28th but it don't even look possible anymore. I think I am going to stop weighing myself all the time. I was much happier with my losses when I waited an entire month to weigh in but I just can't help myself. I go on the scale at least 2 times a week now.
