I haven't seen anything like this on this board yet so I thought that I would put it out there . . .

To those of you that have ever been successful with loosing weight . . .
1. What have you done to do so?
2. How much have you lost?
3. In what timeframe?
AND
4. Did it come back rapidly?

I am asking this because there seems to be so many conflicting stories about how to successfully get rid of unwanted pounds once and for all.

As for me, many years ago I lost 10 pounds in a year's time by simply running (at a pretty fast pace in intervals for 45 minutes) five times a week.

Any others?

1) As far as exercise, I run on the treadmill first thing in the morning 5-6 times a week for 45-60 minutes and I lift weights in the evening 3 times a week for 45 minutes. I drink only water or milk, I stopped going out to lunch (too expensive anyway), I cut back on my alcohol consumption, and I use Xenadrine EFX on and off.

2) Since starting this routine, I've lost about 15 pounds of fat, my muscle mass is the same although I'm a little stronger, and I lost about 2 inches off my waist.

3) I've been following this routine for almost a year.

4) The weight hasn't come back.

Unfortunately, a big part of weight loss is trial and error. What works for one person may not work for another person. As for keeping the weight off once you've lost it, the trick is adopt habits that you know you can maintain even after you've reached your target weight. A big reason why most diets fail is because people resume their original habits after they've lost the weight.

I jog on the treadmill for 3+ miles every other day and do weight lifting, stretching, sit-ups on the other day, pretty much 7 days a week. It's good if you can schedule your day around it and commit to it. Currently my favorite TV show is on when I do my work outs, so I make sure to stop what I'm doing and get exorcising for that hour. I've also shifted my eating habbits and am consuming a lot more soy, yogurt, vegetables, vitamins, and green tea. I haven't given up chocolate, but I eat less.

I lost 10 lbs super slowly over the course of 2.5 years with light periodic exorcise, and not really trying too hard.
Now for the past 4 months I've lost an additional 10+ pounds through daily exorcise. I have a goal of 10 more pounds.

I'm pretty sure that if I stopped exercising and started eating more, the weight would come back. The speed would depend on what I ate and what activity I was doing. However, I plan to keep up my fitness. This is a lifestyle change that you have to stick with. You can never give up. Or when you slip you have to pick yourself up and start again.

(1) First I had a heart attack, then during the first stent, two jolts of a few hundred joules to zap me back into my senses. After that, I quit eating my high fat diet of prime rib, lobster and drawn butter, deli meats and cheeses. I now eat a salad every night, vegetarian 3 nights, fish 2-3 times per week and chicken once a week. I don't exceed more than 6 oz meat per day, and usually keep it at 4 oz per dinner. I get to eat out every Friday night and get one scoop of ice cream as a treat.

My exercise consists of running 15 min after I wake up at 4:15 am. I run 3.1 miles 6 days a week, and on the 7th day (Thursday) I do 1.4 miles. On the same 7th day is when I do 3 miles on the treadmill, bike, arm ergometer, rowing, weights. I also do weights on day 5. On Monday through Friday, I walk 2.6 miles after lunch (around the lake at UF), which takes just under 38 min. On every night of the week, I take a 18 min walk around the block after dinner.

(2 & 3) I weighed 227 on March 15, 2002. On December 31, 2002, I weighed 180. I weighed 157 this morning (April 18, 2003). My end goal is 155, at which time I will reward myself with one slice of vegetarian, cheeseless pizza :) The more amazing part is that I was diagnosed with type II diabetes in 2000. On April 30, 2002, I was at 204 lbs and was able to come off all diabetes medication. Since then, my glucose tolerance is essentially equal to a non-diabetic.

(4) I am certain it never will come back. I have learned my lesson--I like the way I eat now too much to ever go back to that food-excessive sedentary lifestyle. March 15, 2002 was also the start of my tobacco free life. I have never looked back upon quitting, don't miss it, don't ever want it again. I can say the same for foods involved in my eating disorder. The excessive eating and sedentary lifestyle that led to my demise have left a lasting mark on me and effected a postive change in me forever.

1) I started eating a healthy diet. A good balance of carbs, protien, and fat EVERY single day. I eliminated processed foods as much as possible, fast food, quit drinking sodas, and started drinking water by the gallons every day. I get some cardio, but generally do not excercise that much at all. Also been taking Stacker 2 since this all started.

2) I have lost 52 lbs so far.

3) Started my lifestyle change on Dec 30th 2002, and am never going back to the way things were.

4) It's not coming back, and it never is. In fact, the fat is literally melting off my body to the tune of 2-4 lbs a week. I have gone from a 46" waist to being a couple weeks away from fitting comfortably in 38's. I have had to replace my entire wardrobe because everything was hanging on me. It's been expensive, but fun to go shopping for new clothes.
