Hello, I want to lose 30-40 pounds that I have put on after a car accident 2 and a half years ago from lack of working and medication that puts weight on you. I have a serious spinal cord condition and I am not to lad the neck put my head down or try to turn it. I am not to lift anything either. I am allowed to run on an elliptical machine and rowing machine and stationary bicycle as long as I keep my back and head straight. I also have soft tissue injuries to my mid and low back and chronic pain which I take the medication for.
I have reduced the bread, pasta, cookies, and other carbs from my diet to the point that at least 3-4 times a week I do not eat anything but meat and spinach or ceasar salad and an apple for dinner and a couple of rye crisp crackers with cheese on them for lunch. I rarely drink pop. I do have a low fat vanilla latte each day as I hate drinking milk and I feel I at least get some milk this way.
I go to the pool and do water aerobics type exercise 2 times per week. 2 times a week I go to the gym and use the rowing machine for 12 minutes and then the elliptical machine without the arm movements for 20 minutes and after that I go to the pool for some gentle stretching and range of motion exercises. I try to go to the gym one other time each week to row for 12 minutes ride the bike for 12 minutes and run on the elliptical machine for 15-20 minutes.
I might have lost 3 pounds in a month if even that.
What else can I do? Any sugestions? My next options are to either start smoking again (I quit 7 weeks before my accident) or demand that they give me those pills that cause weight loss.

Sorry to hear about you being in a car wreck, my husband was in almost 3 years to the date and is still healing.I hope all goes well.
These are just my thoughts and from things I have picked up along the way.
Make sure you get atleast 1200 to 1300 calories a day.I use fitday, look it up in your search box its free and helps keep track of your daily calories and stuff.
Drink your 8 8oz glasses of water.Another thing I have read is, you drink an extra 8oz of water for each 25lbs you want to lose.Daily water should be 64oz plus say another 16oz =80oz for you.I think I am right.Don't hold me to that.LoL
For your work out go by what your doctor's say you can and can not do.And dont worry about it.You need to heal your body first and that takes some time.
I hope this helped you in some way..

Thank you for your reply. I am not going to heal anymore and could get worse so I can't count on waiting until I heal. I have an incomplete spinal cord injury. I have never had a weight problem and know nothing about dieting. As to exercise I was very active always and just did things without thinking what they were working on or how many calories I was burning off. I have no clue as to how to lose weight and inches.

I wish you luck.My hubby will never be back 100% either. With him we have had a weight problem with him putting it back on.
In 3 years he has only gained back 47 pds.He was at 250 before and the day I brought him home :) he was at 146 this is a man 6'5...He has used weight gainer and all kinds of things. He looks great now.Not to skinny not to big.I miss him being a big man. When I say big I mean in a healthy way.His ring size was 13 now its a 11.
It takes a long time for some to make a come back.
If you can't do alot of working out his PT told use just watch your calorie intake. For a long time from being in a coma and on a feeding tube it was hard for him to go back to soild foods. But then again we had to start all over on everything.
Best of wishes for you.

I agree with southernmama - I too am sufferring from a back injury. I have 3 herniated disks and degenerative disk disease. I have been going to physical therapy, and so am learning what I can and can not do. I am so out of shape that after 20 minutes, I am actually breaking out in a sweat! I realize that I can get a bit better, but with DDD, I will never heal. Losing weight is better for back injuries - particularly mine, as it is located in L4,L5 and S1.
I started Jenny Craig, but I also use fitday, because I am trying to relearn how to eat. When I first started dieting - before I went to Jenny Craig (I really didn't care before, but having thrown out my back three times in 2 months definately put the fear of God in me), I began to log what I ate. I found what my problem areas were and knew I needed the extra structure (at least in the beginning) to get me going. Jenny Craig has a special for 6 weeks for 36 bucks - but the food can be expensive.
I have lost 8 pounds since I started Jenny Craig in earnest - that was April 2nd. So, there can be success with moderate exercise.
Keep in touch with us - this board is so helpful and motivating. I understand your pain - I still have pain, but at least I feel that I have begun to take control for what I can handle - how does that prayer go??
Oh, by the way, I have learned alot through this board - such as preferred fat, carb, and water intake. Using fitday has been fun and kept me honest. Blessings and a big universal hug for you from me.

PSS - I gained 50 pounds after I seriously broke my anke which required surgery, rods and screws. Because of calcium problems (I can't ingest it because it causes me kidney stones and I have lactose intolerance), it took me a loooong time to heal.
Don't give up on your exercise regiment - I did, and believe that this led to my herniated disks.
Oh, by the way, I am a smoker and they told me that my back problems occur more frequently with smoking. I quit several years ago and have regretted taking it up again - it takes so long to get re-motivated to quit again. At least I am puffing on a cigarrette rather than puffing on my out of control 18 year old. ;)

Ya'll hang in, like I say "This Too Shall Pass"
And dont let it get to you on how long it takes you to recover or to settle your cases, WE have no control over it,that is all up to the good lord, lawyers, judges, and doctors.I let it get to me so bad I got depressed and all I kept hearing was take this pill it will help you.I said one day to the doc ,Ok I will take that pill if it will settle all this legal crap, make my husband better, turn back my life to how it was.He said it wont do that, and I said well then until then I wont take it.
This is my life and I just have to deal with it.It's the way I look at it.It happened for a reason .That I still dont know why.I control what I can and let the rest play it's self out.
Same with my weight if I lose I lose if I dont oh well that means I have to work harder at it.
But fitday has been my biggest help and reading thru the internet about food and all.
**My tip on fitday LoL I dont call it cheating if I mark it down on my daily food. :).
And this board helps alot, we are all here for the same reason. So we know we are not alone.. :)

Well I must be doing something right. I have gone from 190 pounds 3 weeks ago to a definate 185 pounds today. I will keep doing what I am doing and hopefully in another 3 weeks another 5 pounds will be gone. I have to keep telling myself what my neighbor said to me when I was starting to get out for my walks after my surgery. "Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and you'll get there." Guess the same thing applies here.
Thanks for all your tips and replies.
