The debate over whether or not Atkins is a healthy alternative to weight loss has been getting dragged through the other threads in great amounts. I don't think this is in any way fair to the posters who are looking for support and serious answers to their questions, while continuing to use the Atkins approach.

If you want to tell the world how wrong it is, post it here. I can assure you, most people doing Atkins will see the subject and be curious enough to see what is being said. You'll still be heard.

If you want to tell the world how good Atkins has been for you, debate away.

It's really time to let the other questions be answered without the fighting mess in between. I don't think anyone here is posting a question hoping to get a good fight started.

So tell us, what do you think of the Atkins approach?

Dare I be the first to reply????? you betcha!!!!

First of all; Atkins may not be right for everyone. And it's not meant to be a quick fix; that's why its called Atkins WAY OF LIFE!!!! I agree that if you do any "diet or WOE"; whether it be Atkins, Jenny Craig, WW, low-calorie, low-fat; the list can go on and on------and revert back to your previous eating habits (the ones that made you gain in the first place) YOU WILL PUT WEIGHT BACK ON!!! That's just common sense. But in Atkins defense; there are literally thousands of people (if not more) who have done this diet for any number of years and have kept the weight off. Just read all the success stories; do you think that 100% of them are all made up as a ploy to get us to try it??? Let the success stories speak for themselves. Like I said before; it may not be doable for some people; and that's okay too. People need to find something that they can live with; it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. That's why I refuse to argue with anyone over whether Atkins really works or not. If it works for me; that's all that matters!!!!! And I just don't see the advantages of attacking the program that one chooses to use. Support, support, support. If you ( and I don't mean you 2winsmom) can't support Atkins; then post on a thread that you do support. If you want to give an opinion--feel free; just try not to criticize!

Just my opinion!!!!!!!!!

OK I'm game. :)

I don't think Atkins is unhealthy or any other such thing. I don't think it's wrong or bad. I do think people lose weight on an Atkins diet because they limited carbs. I think any diet limits carbs. Most people are fat because they eat too many carbs. Carbs are high in calories. Carbs such as fast food, processed food, junk food shouldn't be eaten by anyone in excess. I don't think Atkins is magic. Any time you limit or eliminate these foods, you'll lose weight.

I think everyone has to find a way to eat, that will keep them at a healthy weight.

I think the bigger goal is to find a way to eat that you can stick to for life. If it's the Atkins plan, cool---if it's counting calories, cool--if it's counting fats, cool---Weight Watchers, cool, etc.

I think some people need a strict plan that is all laid out for them, others don't. But I also think the bottom line is, if it works for you and you can maintain it with little effort forever, then it's a good plan.

I think whatever works for you is great- as long as it's not starvation or other eating disorders. I KNOW I couldn't pull off Atkins, because I like carbs too much. I also exercise at least once a day, and I feel like I need complex carbs to keep me going. I AM cutting back on them as a result of what Atkins users have taught me about carbs, though. I have lost over 10 pounds with this approach, so it obviously works for me and my lifestyle.

I am so tired of "Atkins people" versus "non-Atkins people." It's a ridiculous debate. There are many more important things going on in the world that would warrant debate. Diet should not be one of them, because it doesn't affect anyone but the person doing it!

I say: Do what you want as long as it's healthy! And don't listen to people who just want to make everyone on a certain plan think they're going to fail. That's not constructive for anyone.

My two cents...

Very good thread!!! I too agree with all of you. We all need to find what works for us. Not all diets work for all people. The support should be left in the support threads and the debates with the debate threads. Here's to whatever works to make us happy and healthy!
