A Dr. tells you that you can only lose 1-2 lbs a week or it could kill you. Now with the gastric bypass surgery many lose 50 lbs. the 1st month? How can that happen? Are they putting the patients on steroid vitamins? (just kidding) If their stomach has to heal before they can eat solid foods, what kind of a diet are they putting them on? Why isn't this killing them? I really don't understand, does anyone have more info. this just does not make sense to me.

Yeah I wonder the same thing. I also wonder how it can be ok for them to starve themselves practically yet people tell me I am starving myself at 1200 calories average a day and am not losing weight for this reason and better up it to 1500 calories. This really makes no sense to me.

It's the strain of losing more per week that could kill you...because if you were so heavy, then your heart couldn't tolerate massive amount of exercise, yet your greater mass of tissues need more calories so you can't cut down as much...when you have the surgery it's a risk vs benefit thing....it's more risky to keep that weight on, than to take a mass off in one go (for severely obese ppl) but since the weight comes off in one go...your heart has less to lug around so u can now exercise more aswell and so lose more weight, plus you have less tissue to supply with calories so u can get away with eating less.

The 3rd year biochemistry course I just took focused on metabolism in the last month. My teacher, who I trust to know her stuff, said that there are medical cases were severely obese people have lived under hospitalized conditions on nothing but water alone. That is, there body has accept the fact that now carbohydrates, additional fats or proteins is coming their way to be digested and absorbed and switch to utilizing fatty acids that have been stored in adipose (fat) tissue. With just water intake to keep them properly hydrated, they have lived off of their own body fat for one year.
Most of us live to eat. I know I sure do, but if you eat to live, that is taking in only what is essential for your body to function you would find the calorie count to be a lot lower. There are stretch receptors in your digestive system that detect a full stomach and signal the brain that you have reach a saturation point. I don't know what people feel like who have had the surgery, but I imagine that they feel fuller sooner because the receptors will be triggered alot sooner in the small stomach sac than in others.
Speaking of eating, have takin my first metabo ultramax, now I am going for lunch

Just saw a t.v. show where people were talking that had this done. One man mentioned that if they eat spicy foods that they get shooting, severe stomach pains. He said the foods have to be pretty bland. Also, if they overeat they also get very ill. Their portions are extremely small. I guess it would be better than weighing as much as some of these people did and the healthrisks involved, but it must be hard to always have to watch everything you eat.

Gastric bypass takes the first couple feet of small intestine as well, the part that aborbs nutrients initially and mostly. That's why I think so many people end up dying some months after the surgery from diseases caused by lack of nutrition/oxygen, like cancer and heart attacks. It's not good.

hi,
well, for the first 2months they pretty much have a liquid diet. this lady came into where i work and she lost 45lbs. why would they die, people can go a month only bread and water if they had to, or just water and would die. or don't you know this?
i checked into it back in 2001, but changed my mind besides i would have had to come up with about 5,000. and didn't have it back then. and you have to take all these pills for the rest of your life.
