Honestly, I don't know how I'll ever lose weight b/c I'm so confused on the different aspects of weight-loss.
I've never lost weight by anything besides starving myself but I don't really want to do that.
I just don't get it about low/high carbohydrates, protein, fiber, lean meats, what you should/shouldn't eat & in how many servings, sizes, portions, eating 5-6 meals, what exactly is a small meal, etc.
I need to understand all of this before I can lose weight, & I want to be skinnier by the end of December, so I can ride a bike again.
I still can but I don't have one yet & I'd prolly look like an escaped elephant on wheels.
I don't know how big I look or if I'm really considered fat, b/c I'm fairly tall & bony in some places, & not a total heifer. (I hope)
For some reason, I feel that I won't be overweight forever, it's strange but it's there.
Anyway, I've already asked questions like this before, but I'd still like more info, just to totally clear up my misconceptions & such.
Thanks for reading :D

I think food is the wrong thing to think about, but you have to consider that what you eat needs to be healthy. In general, I would say refined sugar is bad. Definately, hydrogenated oils are very bad. And the rest is to just follow the FDA guidlines, the food pyramid.
Aside from that, the key to health is excersize. Rigorous, grueling, push to the limit excercize. I'm suggesting at the very least 30 min/day. Its the only way to be truely healthy.

Just watch how much fatty, sugary food you intake (that doesn't leave much to eat does it? lol) and stick with things like veggies, fruits, lean meats and basically just natural, whole stuff. Make sure your getting the calories that someone your age/height/ and activity range needs. If you eat too many calories or if you eat unhealthy, but you exercise, you aren't going to lose it. And vice versa. The two, healthy eating and exercise, must work in tandem with one another for weight loss to happen. Just be patient and persistent and you can do it!

Isn't sugar in everything? (except water)
I try to eat healthy, but it's hard to get used to b/c the bad foods for you taste the best but I'll live.
But I still don't get it, how many calories should I be getting & how do I figure them out?
I asked my mom what are 5-6 small meals, & she said it could be like crackers & cheese, for ex. but that doesn't seem too healthy to me..
Today, I had some Cream of Wheat for breakfast & a couple hours ago, my dad let me try a mix of white rice, sugar & butter & it's so good but I'm sure it's very bad for me so that stinks.
Also, I do 2 15min. periods on my treadmill at an incline- for the 1st 5mins. I walk at 2.0mph/next 5mins.=2.4mph, then 2.0 for last 5mins.
However, I don't think I'm ever going to lose weight on those speeds so should I increase them?
It hurts for me to walk at 2.9-3.0mph though.
I also use my stationary bike for 10mins. 2x daily on resistance but will this & me working on the treadmill & eating healthier help me lose weight?
sorry for the length http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/redface.gif

Koden,
A ROUGH rule of thumb is to take the weight you want to be, multiply by 10, and that is ROUGHLY the number of calories you want to take in each day.
For example, if you want to be 140 pounds, you would take in about 1400 cals a day.
If you are extremely overweight, there is a different formula to use, email me: nitenurse@3k1.com and I will give you a link. (moderator: it is not a link to a website, it is a formula for calculating the # of cals needed for maintenance or weight loss, so don't delete this post!)
Try to get a balance of fruits and veggies, DO NOT eliminate carbs completely, but try to cut down on white breads, sugars, white rice, etc. To be very basic, cut down on the "white carbs". Try to increase the amount of protein you take in, without going overboard on it. And lastly, cut down on the fat you take in.
Don't worry about percentages for now. If you follow the above advice, continue your exercise (I walk for exercise, about 4 times a week, at least 4 miles, but I had to work up to that--at first I could only do 1 mile!) you WILL start losing weight safely, and in a manner you can live with for life. No pills, no weird drinks, just safe, sane eating for life.
email me if you want advice/support. I didn't have that much to lose, was 163 at 5'7, now 142 goal 130-135.
Lost it all in the above manner.
Good luck!
PS--no more white rice, sugar, and butter breakfasts. EEEK! Try oatmeal, with 2% milk and Splenda (sugar substitute). Vast improvement.

Everything does not really have sugar, but everything you eat is converted to some form of sugar in your body. The problem is with refined sugar (pure white sugar). While fruits can have a lot of sucrose (another form of sugar), it is no where near the amount one consumes in a regular soda (like 10 teaspoons).
Everything in moderation, but no trans-fats (hydrogenated). I dont see a problem with natural fats, like butter, but of course butter on everything is not good. You need some natural fats to survive. But you will get more than enough from most of the foods you eat.
Excercise--pain is gain, in some respect, but dont hurt yourself. I do not think walking is going to be strenuous enough to achieve great results. If you are severely overweight, walking is a good start, but also try to find a way to elevate your heart rate, get a good sweat going. Swimming is the best excercise. You will use more muscles and burn more calories than with most any other form of excersize. And if you can swim, it much safer than many other forms of excersize.

I know I'm sounding like an air-head, but what are carbohydrates & protein?
Are they bad in high amounts?
That sugar/hutter/white rice mix I had yesterday was the 1st time I'd ever had it, & I like to eat wheat bread over white, & my mom usually gets 1% lowfat milk, but we tried fat-free milk the other day & I liked it just the same but she went out & bought the 1% again..
Would it be better for me to drink the fat-free milk?
I'd like to swim (but not in lakes) but the one near me is shut down for some reason & I wouldn't go anyway b/c I don't know how very well.
Most overweight people probably wouldn't want to go swimming in public either.
I think my biggest problem is that I'm so bored all the time that I just eat w/out really being hungry, to have something to do.
I don't like doing it & try to control myself, but it's not that easy.
Especially when there's lots of food I like around..
Also, if yall don't feel like answering my questions, b/c I have a lot of them, can anyone give me a link to a website or such that might tell me more about carbs, proteins, etc.?
Thanks for reading :)

Koden,
I am very sorry, but this Bulletin Board will not allow is to give any links--if you do, you run the risk of having the whole thread deleted.
How old are you? Height? Weight? Sounds like you have a good relationship with your mom--can you ask her to either take you to a dietician/nutritionist, or even to take you to your family doctor for some advice and guidance.
Sometimes the whole family has to modify their eating ways in order to help. Congrats to you for identifying this problem so early in your life! PLEASE don't go overboard with dieting. It can lead to an eating disorder. Begin by cutting down on fat containing foods, and cutting down on the "white foods" I mentioned. That, coupled with something even as minor as walking every day will start you on the journey.
(1% milk is fine. Don't sweat it. Just don't drink gallons!!!!)

I would recommend buying a really basic weight loss book and reading it. It will help you understand things so much better, and you can always refer back to it later when you have a question. I read the "Fitness for Dummies" book, and it was really great about explaining everything very simply, and didn't assume that you already knew what things were. I think this sort of thing could help you out a lot!

yeah, I really didn't think anything could be posted for me, but I just wanted to make sure anyway.
I'm 16.5, 5'8", & my scale is 10lbs. off, so it says I'm around 145 but I think it's actually 155.
Actually, me & my mom aren't always on the best terms, & I know she & my dad wants to lose weight too, but they keep buying sodas, cake mixes, etc. & it irritates me b/c they keep tempting me. (those foods)
I think I have made improvements though, I've stopped drinking chocolate milk b/c I threw it away & told my parents not to buy it anymore, I only eat wheat bread, I actually ate an apple the other day, & I don't really eat meat.
I very, very rarely eat candy bars at all, & same thing for other candies like that.
They're small, but hey, it helps, right?
But, I think I'd rather rot than go to my doctor/nutrionist though, that's humiliating & we can't afford it either.
My mom's got lots of weight books, but I'd like to read that Fitness for Dummies book BlueAngel mentioned, so if I ever get money, I will try to buy it.

koden, i completely understand what you're going through, at least so far as the part about your parents. I'm 21, so i'm a bit older than you, but i still live at home during the summer. I've tried so hard to get my parents to change their unhealthy habits but it never happens. It's really discouraging to your diet when your mom brings home 3 gallons of ice cream and 2 boxes of klondike bars. Yikes!! It's so annoying!! I dont have to worry about that stuff for most of the year because I have my own house in Va where i go to school, and i simply dont buy those things, but when i'm at home I have a really hard time dealing. One thing i've done that's helped is I got this jar, and then i got all these little pieces of paper, and on each little slip i wrote an encouraging statement and something to do, for example: read a book, or go for a walk, and then when i felt like cheating on my diet, i'd just draw out one of the slips of paper and do what it said. It kept me busy and kept my mind off food. So, just a suggestion. oh yeah, and hang in there, i understand what you're going through ;) ps have you tried cutting all soda out of your diet, if you stop drinking soda for one year you'll lose about 15 lbs....just a tip ;)

hey :)
It's so hard for me to ignore foods that I like when they're sitting in my cabinet, but nothing keeps my mind off food when I'm playing video games, esp. fighting/racing ones.
On my racing game, I can play for hours at a time & I can't think about food since I have to keep my focus.
Reading helps too but it's so much easier to put a book down & go get snack than when I'm playing video games, but I jokingly told my mom to put locks on the cabinet doors..
I don't raid our food constantly or pig-out; I think I'm a nibbler, eating foods off/on when I'm awake.
I have been able to totally un-hook myself from sodas, & don't even really desire them anymore, until I see 1 in the fridge & have to have a sip.
I'm really trying to get my parents to stop buying them.
gotta go now
later :D
