How often do you weigh? When I am not doing so well on my eating plan, I tend not to weigh at all because I'm too afraid to see the number. When I'm expecting results, I turn into a person obsessed with weighing myself. I will weigh always in the am and then sometimes later just out of curiosity. When I do weigh, I tend to get on and off the scale a half dozen times, each time making sure it's zeroed properly and then stepping on oh so slowly and carefully. This morning I stepped on only once. I've lost 12 pounds on the mayo "clinic" diet in 8 days, and I feel great! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dance.gif Thought I'd better not get on and off again and leave well enough alone. What do you do?

Congrats onthe loss!! I used to be obsessed like you. On again, off again. If I even left on my gitchies then i deducted a pound!!! anyways, I gave up on the scale because i found it too discopuraging. As women our bodies retain water, go through hormonal changes all that can be deceiving on the scale. I have decided to weigh myself 1x per month. i have chosen the monday after *tom* is gone because then there will be no water retention and I seem to be pretty stable then. i also measure myself but again, I am only going to do it 1x per month. good luck and congrats again!

What does *tom* stand for exactly? I know it must be the menstral period.

I weigh in every morning, after I pee before I shower. I started the 3 day diet Monday though and I don't want to weigh in til Thursday. It's hard to stay away!!

hi redheadtd!

There is no quick weight loss that is permanent. You can do the mayo diet .....do a search on here or on the net and you will see it......it is a 3 day plan I think that you supposedly lose like 10lbs in 3 days. Most people will gain some, if not ALL of it back when they stop.
The best plan is to change your eating habits. Choose a plan that you can do long term. If you have alot of weight to lose the best thing for you is to take it slow toavoid regaining and having alot of loose skin. I have done Atkins for awhile and it is very effective for people who have many pounds to lose. I am now within about 25lbs of my goal and have lost 55lbs already! AND it is all fat I have lost. I lost 12 inches on waist alone!!! 12 INCHES!!! That is alot!
anyways, whether you choose lowcal/lowfat or lowcarb (atkins style) it must be something you can live with.
You must exercise as well to burn the fat and tone those muscles that will be showing before you know it.

Good Luck!

Hi Annes thanks for the quick response. I am doing low Carbs now. Not Atkins, just low carbs. No tators, bread, pasta, snacks. I eat Salads, cottage cheese, meat and veggies. Not necesasarly in that order.

The mayo "clinic" diet is I believe somewhat similar to Atkins, although I'm not that familiar with Atkins. If you do a search on here you will find it. Basically, in a nutshell it is:

Breakfast: 1/2 grapefruit or juice (unsweetened), 2 eggs any style, and 2 slices of bacon

Lunch: grapefruit as above, salad, any dressing, and meat, any style, any amount.

Dinner: grapefruit as above, meat, and salad as above,
and any green or red vegetable cooked in butter or any seasoning. Coffee or tea, one cup

Bedtime snack: Glass of tomato juice or skim milk.

All soft drinks need to be diet and caffeine free.

Stay on diet for 12 days, stop diet for 2 days.

It is very important i think for people to know that this diet did not originate from the prestigious Mayo Clinic. This diet has been around for many many years and has been "doctored" by changing one variable or another over time. I have no idea where it came from and I would like to know. I can tell you that it does seem to work, and it is very easy to stick to. I can tell because I'm having zero, and I do mean ZERO carbohydrate cravings! That is a miracle.

Like someone else said, what about long term results? I guess it would be like just about any other. Like they say eating habits must be of the permanent type, but if I keep feeling this great, I may eat this way forever! (With maybe a few minor adjustments) I wake up better, have no brain fog, and am more alert in general.

I am about to go off for my two days off and I really don't know what to expect or what will happen, but I'm hoping for the best. I will keep you all posted

PS. Can anyone reading this post tell me if it is similar to Atkins?

I weigh every morning, after I pee, take off my jammies and before I shower!

I have to say that I think you should keep on top of even a pound or two. It is so easy to gain a few and then let another few creep on. If you don't know your weight that is.

Similar to Atkins but on atkins induction you wouldn't have grapefruit juice, tomato juice, skim milk and no grapefruits.
as well, there are cetain veggies that are good and ones that are bad. i think the idea is the same...very low carb/sugar.

I weigh in when I want to.

Lately, about every other day because I am losing all of a sudden as a fluke. I'm down 2 pounds in the lat three days, and it's kind of scary to see it going down like that.

The best time to weigh is after extended periods of time. You see the weight change and you just go WOW http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wow.gif!!!

I heard u should weigh once a week because of water weight gain or something. And I know alot of ppl who don't even weigh themselves during "tom" because of water and bloating. Just thought Id let u know. Hope this helps.

I weigh every Sunday morning. There's nothing significant about Sundays to me other than they signify a new calendar week. If I weighed myself every day, I'd go insane. :) Plus, when I lose, I'm more encouraged to see some larger increments.

I personally don't even own a scale. I tend to lean towards the obsessive/compulsive side, and I never want to get into the habit of focusing on the number of pounds that I weigh. I am happy if my clothes fit well...and I concentrate on clothing size rather than pounds. Because although I would love to weigh the proverbial 120 pounds, with my frame size, that would be too thin. So I'm trying to get to a good size 8...maybe a 6 if I'm lucky someday...but that could be 130 pounds, and that is okay with me. Everyone is different.

I weigh once a day. I have a scale that measures both weight and body fat. I record both measurements in a daily log. I step on the scale three times, write down my measurements for each count, calculate averages for the three times I stepped on the scale, and enter those averages in my log. I use my log to track long-term progress.

I'm very strict about my measurements. I step on the scale in just in my undies, because clothing alters weight measurements. You also need to make sure to measure on a hard floor. Soft floors throw off scale accuracy. (It's amazing how much variation you can get on a soft floor!) And make sure you measure yourself in the same position all the time. I hold my breath too (because I read something on the Net about people holding their breath for fat measurements).

Twice a month I use a tape measure to measure various points of my body (but I find those unreliable because I'm not very good at measuring).
