View Full Version : Carb and Fat Blockers: My Personal Experiment

I'm on Day 1 of an experiment to see if these Fat and Carb blockers work. I bought one that has what appears to be a standard list of ingredients for the over-the-counter version of this product. Hopefully this will save you all some time and money.
Here are my stats:
I'm 30 years old, 5'3", 150 pounds. I work out regularly and lift weights. The problem I have is that my diet falls apart after 7:00 at night. I eat dinner and can't stop munching. Despite pumping up my work outs to 5 days a week with 50 min to an hour of cardio-vascular with a few days of weights, I have had no weight loss (but I'm also not gaining).
I never used to be this big. I quit smoking about a year ago, and I have put on about 15 lbs since then.
So, here's my report for Day 1:
I took two pills 20 minutes before dinner last night and then did my usual munching. I have had no side effects. I was careful to choose a pill without caffeine, which I'm pretty sensetive to. I slept like a baby. The only noticeable effect happenend this morning. I'm not sure how to put this delicately....I guess I'll just say it. I pooped three times, but it wasn't urgent or uncomfortable, just a little soft. I have a sense now that I'm sort of "empty", which I take as a good sign. I'll report back in a couple days and let you know what's happening.
If anyone has any advice or commentary regarding the fat and carb blockers, I'd love to hear it.

I am myself waiting for an order i placed over the internet for phase 2 starch blockers..i am hoping that it comes today...from what i have read on here that seems to be the general consensus (increased "movement") and that doesnt seem like it would be a bad thing...i am not very regular anyway and it might be helpful to get things moving! sorry if this is gross.. I am hoping that they will help me out...i know that i have to make my own effort but a little help wouldnt hurt!! good luck and keep us posted!!

That's great! I saw the Starch blocker and it's practically the same thing as mine. Between us, we'll be able to determine if and how these things work. Be careful of the caffeine and other stimulants. I get little heart flutters from ephedra and too much caffeine, so I was careful to choose a product without those things. Just out of curiosity, how much weight are you trying to lose?

Hi Mahogany!
I'm using a product called "block carbohydrates and bind fat" by NFI Dietary supplements. But it's expensive and I'm sure you can get the exact same ingredients for less money with a little searching. The key ingredient appears to be the extract of northern white kidney bean, but I could be wrong. FYI, I had lots of energy during my work out today, but I think that was becasue I was listening to a old 90's alternative mix tape on my headphones and probably not the pills ;). I'll try to post daily to give everyone updates. I think this will be good because I'm not changing ANYTHING except the pills. My weighht has been completely steady for over 2 months. So anything I lose will have to be the pills. Likewise, if I don't lose anything, you can all save your money.

okay so I ran into a wrinkle. Last night, I'd taken two carb/fat-block pills before dinner. Later on, before bed, my stomach started to feel a little upset. This morning I was okay, but I didn't have quite the same experience as yesterday morning. Let's just say that it didn't appear that all the fat I ate yesterday was "harmlessly passing through my system". In fact, I got a few bad intestinal cramps and I'm not sure anything outside of the norm passed at all. It's late now and my belly is REALLY bloated...I think it's either gas or water, and I have no explanation outside of the pills. Getting bloated like this is very unusual for me. Regardless, I have a friend coming in this weekend and I have to fit into my cute outfits, so I decided not to risk it and I'm going to put the experiment on hold until next week. So, until next week. I encourage everyone who tries a new product to post the results here, as this information is invaluable.

I am also trying out the "Starch Blockers"....I have been to many web sites and message boards, and they seem to be a good addition to a low carb diet (like Atkins Diet), but I want to be sure they work.....I checked my Ketones today and was burning SMALL (just started induction again last week). I took the tablets tonight and had a Burrito with the bad things being a Regular tortilla and some beans in it(things I usually leave out).
I Will report in if my burning goes down or if anything odd happens.....I have practiced the Atkin's diet since 1995 (3 years then losing 75 pounds and keeping them off for 5 years). I have restarted the diet this year after slacking in my habits and gaining back weight......I have now lost 50+ pounds again on Atkin's thanks to the new Low Card TOrtillas......But if I can add RICE and things back and use these CARB BLOCKERS, WOW! :)

The brand I am using is Dr. Steven Rosenblatt's Starch Blocker, which is Ephedra Free and free of caffeene or any other bad things(the Startch Blocker CHEWS were 4g SUGAR! BAD!) Bottle of 80 pills was 13.50 at Wallmart her in Southern California.

There is a very interesting WARNING on the top of the label of the BOTTLE(not on the outside box) and it states:
Phase 2(tm) brand white kidney bean extract has no effect on sugars found in fruits, milk and table sugar.

So that dispelled the hope of getting some decent Sweet and Sour Chicken, but I can maybe have the deep fried parts and whip my a sugar-free sweet and sour sauce.....

Oh well, more to come, and good luck on the experiment!

Hi Spinos:

Your results is really inspiring..
I am jut starting my induction phase for a week. May I ask you a few questions? You mean you lose 75 LB before and restarted Atkins this year to lose another 50+ LB? Wow~~ how did you do it and how long it takes you to lose that much?
Do you feel harder to reach ketosis or weight loss is slower when you "restart" Atkins?
And did you use keto stix to test your keto and it always turned purple?

I am so busted because my stix only turned to dark pink but never purple while I ate no fruits, no nuts, no normal carbs and only allowable foods on induction phase so don't know why it remain dark pink stil...

Thanks for your input and sharing...

 I'm new here but wanted to tell you I think your experiment is a good idea. I, myself, started taking Chitosan (500 mg) before lunch and supper and found it really helps. Have the same results as you as far as the potty goes! Anyway, for some reason I put the pills away and wasn't taking them for a couple weeks. Notice a difference so will begin again tomorrow. I'm 60 yrs old, about 40 lbs overweight, and have dieted in some fashion since I was 10 yrs old. I swear I know eery calorie and carb count of every food in the universe! Keep us posted on how you do with your test.

Thanks for the info Andrea. I do take vitamin C so it should help me, too. I get so disgusted with always being so heavy. How about you? Are you very overweight? Figuring, as I get older, I shouldn't worry about it so much but it's a hard habit to break. thanks for replying. Have a great day.

I want to lose about 40 lbs. Still will be overweight but figure, at my age, who wants to be skinny! Being too thin, as we age, only makes one look older. (Boy, doesn't that sound like an excuse!!!) Take care and don't worry about the wedding. Just knock 'em dead with your personality and a big smile!!!

Hi there all.
I thought I would update you on my little experiment with the carb and fat blockers. In my last posting I told you all that I had some minor stomach cramps and bloating and decided to stop taking the pills for the weekend. Well, they progressed into full-blown stomach cramps that made me feel terrible for about two days. I have never had an experience like this so I'm 100% sure it was a reaction to the pills. In addition to the cramps, I had MAJOR bloating that wrecked part of my weekend :(. Maybe someone else would not have the same reaction, but be warned. So now, I'm back to square 1. I don't need to lose 50 lbs. Just 10 lbs is all I want! I'm not that big and my belly is flat, and since I started lifting weights, I've even gotten some muscle definition. I work out reguarly and I'm generally pretty healthy. What can I do to lose this stupid weight?? Are there any suggestions? I would love to start a new experiment, so if anyone has anything I could try, I'm desperate. I have already tried the three day diet, and it's pretty hard for me to keeep up my workouts with so few calories. Besides, I always put the weight back on right away with that one...is there anything anyone has had success with?

First of all I would like to say that I am sorry that you got ill. That does not sound fun at all. I too, wanted to try the fat and carb blocker but, I opted for a cheaper alternative. I have read and heard various times about the wonders of Raw Apple Cider Vinegar. It is supposed to help promote weight loss as well as help with a multitude of other things. This product at my local health food store cost just $2.51. I hope it works! We have a 25 year reunion to go to at the end of the month.

Starch Blocker Experiment Progress:

Update: Starch Blockers Day 3

I have taken the starch blockers for only SOME of my meals and as long as you avoid sugars, and stuck to the main Atkin's diet guidelines, you can add in carbs now and then with these carb blockers. I have blocked two meals so far and am still buring in Ketosis! I did have a little extra gas the first time, but I am really used to that effect since I eat so many sugar-free jelly beans and gummy bears....it had no effect on the second time. I will keep posting results or failures with these things....may need to start a new topic! hehe.....I think it is most important to stick to the Atkin's diet plan, and use these ONCE in a while to help make the low-carb diet more bearable, and thus hopefully successful.

I have read on a website called Jenny the Bean, that she had used the starch blockers and they will stop the starches from digesting IN YOUR STOMACH, but she seems to suggest that microorganisms in the large intestine somehow get to the carbs and thus knock you out of ketosis, but I have not seen that effect, thought I have only been on it a few days (the starch blockers, I am an expert at low-carb diets) > :)

Oh well, any more input from others is appreciated...

Hi Spinos,
Thanks for your sharing.

Can you tell me how you know you are in ketosis? If you use stix, usually when you use them? And do you think those low-carb or 0-carb candies like bars and gummy bears would delay or get you out of ketosis?

Thanks again!!!

My day with the starch blockers

I am on the ATkins diet, I'm in induction week after having taken a break from the diet for a week...
I had just started burning again & figured I had not more than a week to lose if I tried the blockers.

So here I was, burning large & staring at the bottle of pills, reluctant to try them in fear of getting knocked out of ketosis, but I figured it would be worth it to find out how it would work out.

After cussing the pill companies up and down for a millionth time for having to make such huge horsepills for people to choke on, I chewed up my 2 non-chewable Starch blockers & went to lunch.
It was odd actually ordering fried chicken with french fries (my god it's easy to order out when you're NOT modifying anything to the Atkins diet!! :))

Anyways, I was happily chewing away at my carb-enriched foods and when everything was consumed, I had eaten about 50-60 carbs worth of foods and strangely enough I didn't feel full at all. In fact, this was a feeling that would continue to bother me throughout the entire day, the feeling of not being full!

I went the whole day being hungry, no matter what I ate or how much I ate, I was hungry.
Of course I didn't touch much more carbs after lunch, because I'm uncertain as to when the blockers actually stop working & when you have to start counting your intake of carbs again... But I ate pork rinds, jello, sugarfree chocolates and other carb free snacks and foods throughout the day....

Well, anyways, I tested my burning level again this morning and it had knocked me down 1 level from large to moderate. I did not take in any more carbs than I should have (except for the lunch which was moderated by the starch blockers).

My burning in general is affected rather easily, I burn fast & strong, but then again it doesn't take a whole lot to knock me back down, so I'm satisfied with the result that I can eat 60 carbs and only get knocked down one level... I didnt feel gassy at all, no bloating or any weird after effects.

I'm happy on the Atkins diet as is, and intend to use the starch blocker as a treat once in awhile.

Hi All....

Update: The Starch Blockers do seem to block SOME of the carbs, but I was knocked down a bit. I think I need to start a NEW thread and define the "rules" needed for others to possibly help out on this test....

In response to JennyG:

>Can you tell me how you know you are in ketosis?

I buy these little strips called "KetoStix" from the pharmacy....ya pee on them in the morning and it changes colors depending on how many keytones are present in your urine. The scale is: NONE, TRACE, SMALL, MODERATE, LARGE, VERY LARGE. I use them daily at same time in morning after I wake up, seem to get consistent results that way.

>And do you think those low-carb or 0-carb candies like bars and gummy bears would delay or get you out of ketosis?

I eat the low carb candy daily without affecting my "burning". If you have too many of the candys, it has a laxative effect and flushes your system (sometimes I use this strategically).
My main caution with the candy is not to have it in excess....I eat about a 1/3 bag of sugar-free jelly beans now a day(about 1.5 ounces) and have no problems. As for the candy bars, I have 1-3 a day, but spread them out over time. My wife and I have converted our pantrys to have ALL sugar free stuff available and that helps a lot....we are hoping for good results of adding these starch blockers into the diet, but like I said I think the "Rules" need to be defined better to get some results.

Take care.........

Spinos

tigrazhia - it is funny that you mention about the hunger thing because i have been feeling the same way...no matter how much i eat i never get the "full" feeling.. i am not hungry anymore after i eat but that is is and then i seem to get hungry a bit faster for my next meal...i have been careful to space food out so i dont go over cals for the day and that helps..but boy do i wake up hungry... it is a good hungry though...sometime i have a problem with gas if i get too hungry and it is painful..i am glad that i dont get that though...
i just though i would let you know you arent the only one.... anyone else with that same thing???

Hi everyone. I am a regular on the back board, but this is my first post here, although I've been lurking for a couple days. Here's my story. In January, I was about 70 lbs overweight. I made up my mind to do low carb, and hubby did it with me. I lost 50 lbs in 6 months, he lost 30 (he wouldn't give up his beer or popcorn, just cut down). And the thing is, it wasn't that bad. We went on vacation in March and I had already made up my mind I wasn't dieting on vacation! You know how that goes. Well, we found that we would splurge just one meal a day, maybe a baked potatoe with dinner or something. It wasn't even hard, and I actually lost a couple lbs. Now, unfortunately, I fell off the bandwagon BIG TIME in the last 2 weeks. And boy, did I get out of control! It is amazing how when you go back to eating carbs, your body craves more and more! Well, I gained about 4 lbs in those 2 weeks. So, I started induction yesterday. I did buy the carb blocks based on what I'm reading here. I plan on doing induction for 2 weeks, so I wont need them yet. The thing that really helped me stay on the diet this time as opposed to when I tried it before, is I buy the Atkins products like the breakfast and candy bars. They really help me. Very expensive, but oh well. I have battled weight all my life. But never got into the 200's until I quit smoking a few years ago. Well, I'm smoking now, and my quit date is 10/1. Plan on doing induction for those first 2 weeks also. Anyway, that's my story. Take care everyone! ~Daubie

CARB BLOCKER UPDATE:

Wife and I are burning LARGE on Atkin's diet...

We both took the Carb blockers 20 mins before eating a LARGE Italian mean of Gnocchi, Garlic Bread in Cream sauce at one of our favorite resturaunts (been on Atkins since March, 03).....we had just hit Phase 2 of Atkins so figured if the starch blockers did not work it would only be 2 weeks lost to get burning again....

After eating our fill of this meal, we both tested the next day and our burning was still going! :) I was knocked down a LITTLE (about 1/2 step from Large to Moderate). Also, neither of us has had any ill side effects, except for that odd hunger/not hunger feeling that Tigrazhia mentioned....but it was a lot less this time.

Another POSITIVE side effect of that hunger/not hunger feeling is that it seems to have made both our stomach's shrink....ever since we are on regular Atkin's Phase 2 intake (40 or less a day) but instead of eating a whole bacon-cheeseburger as usual...we could only eat about 1/2! Still working up a plan to get everyone's test results in a new thread.....stay tuned!!

Hi Spinos,

Mind telling me the dosage you take? Your experience is really amazing!!
Did you do any exercise to boost your burinig? I m still hanging on Atkins second time induction phase in conjunction with CLA. Still losing and burning, but just very small and little.. I have a trip with my honey next month and surely would have some big meals. I plan to use Carb Blocker for that feast. Does your box have the Dr.'s head on that package? ^_^

Thanks for sharing...

We took 2 starch blockers each...this is day 3 after eating an entire plate of gnocchi & cheese bread & I am STILL burning large...obviously the plate of pasta didn't touch me at all.

I am still feeling the hunger that I did the first time I tried the blockers, I'm expecting my body to be back to normal tomorrow as last time it took me about 3 days to get back to regular eating habits... then again, you can eat all you want on Atkins as long as ya eat the right stuff :-)

I'm still wondering if these starch blockers are too good to be true, but they do work!!! I'd be interested to see if anyone who has tried them has noticed if weightloss goes slower or anything while doing the starch blockers on the Atkins....

I'm not good at trackign weight as I weight rarely, but it would be intersting to find out :)

So far though... YAY for starchblockers....

:)(Although I REALLY wish they were smaller...I'd rather take 4 small pills that 2 I cant swallow lol... I chew'em up but they taste nasty :-))

Hi Jenny,

I take 2 x 500mg tablets about 20 mins before I eat carbs....and only if I am going to eat any large amout of carbs (I still adhere to the Atkin's Diet Phase 2 40 or less a day). But I have used the carb blockers now and then to successfully block the carbs from meals without affecting my ketosis burning rate.

Now I will monitor my rate of weight loss and see if that goes up or down.....

And yes, I use the pills with his face on the bottle, but those pills are LARGE, and wife hates them....I will get the smaller ones that someone suggested...I think the key with the starch blockers was using them WITH the Atkin's diet.....I can stay on the Atkin's for life now, with very little modification or forseeable end....Phase 4 here I come! hehe

Hi all! I'm new to starch/carb blockers and do not do Atkins although I am really watching and lowering my carbs. I bought Metabolife Carb Blockers. Hello Everyone

So, I am on the Atkins diet and have been supplementing it with carb blockers on and off for about the last 2 months or so. I went A-wall about a week ago because I had cake at a wedding without taking a blocker and it wrecked havoc on my sugar cravings. I had a small binge and have been gradually getting back on track in the last coule of days. Yesterday, I checked my ketostix and was surprised to see that they were at around 40 after having pizza, and breaded chicken wings the day prior with starch blockers. So when ever I had a cheat meal and took the blockers it seems like it really DID block out the majority of the carbs. Now I think I'm back on track and I know that if I am overcome with a craving or faced with something like a wedding cake again, I can be a little less stressed out about it. I've also found that my cravings are reduced when I take the pills.
