broken_tibia (interesting name???)
Basically you eat mostly:
PROTEIN = meat, fowl, fish, eggs and limited amts of cheese (I think 3 oz. or something?)
CARBS = limit to 20 grams and only 3 cups salad vegetables each day and
FATS = like some butter, olive oils, fish oils, mayonnaise (don't go overboard), sour cream (some) basically any that aren't unhealthy. Don't go crazy with fats, just eat normal amounts.
I eat until I'm full (which at first is a lot, but your appetite will decrease quickly)
DO THIS FOR 2 WEEKS which is called Induction. You will lose a lot the first 2 weeks. Then add 5 grams carbs/day the 3rd week, then 5 more the 4th week and so on until you stop losing weight. Then back off on the carbs a little until you lose slowly.
ALSO take multi-vitamins and supplements during Induction or you'll feel like CRUD! This is required in the BOOK.
I WOULD RECOMMEND BUYING THE BOOK... There's too much information to write it all here, but this is the basic gist of it.
I hope this helps, write if you have more questions and I'll try to answer them.
I have lost 17 lbs total so far. I stopped then started again last Thurs. and lost 8 lbs since 12 days ago. I really like this diet because I have very few cravings and am rarely hungry. :D Good luck!

I'm not quite sure I understand the point of adding carbs after the induction period. What's the point of adding carbs if you are losing weight? Is it because you will lose too much? Can you explain the process after induction in more detail? Also, 5 extra carbs a day isn't much. What exactly can you eat to add those few extra carbs without going over? BTW, I started today and it's not bad at all. I'm a big soda drinker so I switched to diet which has no carbs or calories.

Also, will it matter if I drink diet soda with aspartame?

Hi All!
First off I agree with posey. You should really get the Dr Atkin's book. It will explain a lot of questions you have. Plus the induction diet is only for 2 weeks. But if you want to do it longer.I think it is really up to you & how you feel health wise.
Soon2Bslim,
I drink soda with Aspartame, and I use it for a sweetner. Some people says it holds their weightloss up. Others say it makes you hungry. I don't have a problem with it. But I'm not a big soda drinker either. However I do use it in tea w/lemon in strawberrys, and whipped cream. I really think it is according to your system. All you can do is try it,and see if it seems to hold you up from losing weight. Like I said you really should have the book. It will help you a lot. I got my books off Half.com ,because I got them brand new ,and it didn't cost as much as getting them in a store. I wish you all the best of luck on your diets!!! I have been on Dr.Atkin's 19 weeks & have lost 60 lbs. GOOD LUCK ALL!!! sjg

You probably don't want to stay at 20 grams indefinately because you will lose weight too fast for too long of a period of time (for a lot of people).
Your body uses carbs for energy first, then fat (this is body fat, not dietary fat-there is a difference). Induction gets rid of the carbs fast so you start burning fat. If you eat too many carbs, the fat can't be burned as readily. However, veggies are carbs and you need them for the vitamins and nutrients. Hence you should add carbs after a while.
Induction is more for getting you a quick start at weight loss and getting rid of the cravings and extra carbs that your body is carrying. It is not a healthy diet to stay on for a long time unless you get lots of supplements. You can't get all the nutrients you need from 20 grams. Some people do stay on it for a long time until they are closer to their goal weight, but you won't feel nearly as good and the weight isn't as likely to STAY off.
The 5 grams of carbs/week that you add after induction should be: more veggies or add fruits first (to get more of the nutrients you need) and then maybe whole grains in small amts (1 slice stone ground whole wheat bread is 20 grams). You could even add back milk (small amt) after a while and still lose weight (just slower).
Atkins eventually wants you to be on a fairly balanced diet with no processed junk foods.
ASPARTAME (NUTRASWEET/EQUAL) - studies show that aspartame can have a similar affect on your blood sugar levels as sugar does. Which can cause cravings and even stall weight loss. It is also VERY bad for you (apparently) I still drink it very rarely but I try to use SPLENDA instead. So far it hasn't been shown to be bad for you (splenda or sucrolose).
I myself am avoiding aspartame as much as possible.
Did I get all your questions?
Hope this helps :D
