ok,I'm only 18 but I'm really starting to feel over weight, everyone tells me I'm not but when I stand in front of my mirror with just bra and underwear, and well I feel very fat, I get jealouse of other girls who are quite thin and I want to lose weight so badly but it's so hard and I'm always hungry and I have no idea how I can drop a few pounds and I'm just getting very frustrated...I have a boyfriend and he's always telling me about how good I look so I'm really not trying to lose weight for a boyfriend or anything, I just want to do it for me, I used to be really fat when I was younger, like at the age of 11 to 14 and I was always made fun of. I have a few low self esteem problems, which really sucks, I have my good days and my bad days, sometimes I feel so fat and ugly I dont' even want to go to school and other days I feel quite good about myself and am quite happy with how I look, but stil I would like to drop a few pounds cause I know I've gained weight over the summer and I was just wondering if anyone out there had any suggestions..please and thanks I could really use them.

Can you give us some of your stats - height, weight, what size clothes you're wearing, what type of build you have (large frame, med, small), what types of foods you're eating, any exercise you're getting, etc?

This will help us to give you the best advice we can!
:)

you know..i had a similar prob when i was younger in that i was overweight all my like and sooo used to being called names and dealing with the "fat" issue that for a while in 7th grade i had been skating regularly and was actually the correct weight for my age and i never even knew it! i remember being told in gym that i was not overweight and i couldnt believe it and then i have looked back at pics and realized i was okay but i had heard it and felt it so long that i never knew that i was okay then until later and the time had past and unfortunately things got much worse in high school before the got better..mainly because i had quit skating and my parents divorced etc etc...
someone said here that it takes a while for your brain to catch up with your body in how it perceives itself. is your weight good as far as the charts go?? is your bmi healthy?? maybe you might need some toning but i would be you are just fine and just havent gotten used to the "new" you!!
good luck to you!!! hope i made some sense...

Hi given_to_fly, welcome to the board. It would help us if we knew your stats, such as weight and height and what you typically eat in a day. You also have to remember that your still young and your body can still be changing so don't be to hard on yourself. Your lucky to have a boyfriend who likes you regardless how you look. Your too young to be so critical and hard on yourself but I know were your comming from. Anyway post your stats and were try to help you as best as we can.

well..I am now 160 but before the summer i was 145 and I was quite happy with that, my height is about 5'7, and I'm about a 13 sometimes 14 depends on the make of the clothes, what I would like to be is a 12 maybe even an 11, but I don't know. Now I'm sure I just sound like a whiner cause it's really not that bad, but I would like to loose a few pounds. I'm also a vegitarian..so..I think that may be a reason as to why I'm gaining weight. I eat chicken sometimes so I'm kind of a semi-vegitarian, but still, I try to eat healthy but it's so hard I just thought that someone could give tips...also with the whole exercise thing. I tried to walk to school everyday, for the first two weeks it worked but it's so hard because my apartment is right at the bottom of a hill, no matter which way I go I have to walk up a hill and I almost die walking up the hill, I like sweat to death and end up completely out of breath so I didn't want to deal with that anymore so I decided to start taking the bus.
I do a bit of walking, I tend to walk home alot, unless my friends there to give me a ride, i have my lisence but no car.

well I was pretty thin untill the age of 11, I gained a lot of weight and from grade 6-8 I was picked on all the time by all the other kids, I had 0 friends and no one really talked to me, the summer after grade 8 I lost a bit of weight I went from 185 to 145-150, i'm not sure how I got there but thats what happened...my weight keeps going up and down through out the past five years between 145 and 160..i've actually never been 160 but now i'm almost over it and i'm not too happy about that. I think I just need more exercise.

you need to really study your vegetarian diet and ensure you are intaking enough protein..the number one problem in overweight vagans is the lack of protein and too many sugars and carbs...
I bet you need to add some more beans and tofu to get some protein...then you'll slim back down..and if you aren't doing it now...exercise. :)

Hi given...
It seems like if you feel like you look good somedays, you really may just need to exercise a little more....it would probably tone you up pretty quick if you even just did some high reps of light weights. Also, I'm a veg too, (full-fledged... :D haven't eaten meat in over 8 years). Although I didn't gain when I turned, i wasn't eating well at first because my main source of protein was cheese (I was in college and usually my two veg choices were cheese sub or cheese pizza...yikes!). If you can eat more beans, tofu, tempeh, and that kind of thing and it will help a lot. A little cheese is ok, but eggs are really great if you need a burst. Really good protein and they keep you full for a long time. A great option at school can be salad with lots of veggies with chick-peas and cottage cheese/boiled eggs to boost up your protein. It's a very satisfying and filling meal, but really low-fat (unless smothered in bleu cheese of course) and full of fiber. Good luck! :D

Blondie & Phantom are right - maybe you need to look more closely at the foods you're eating. Have you tried using fitday? It's free, and can really open your eyes as to the foods you're eating and what's in them. Just do an internet search for it, and you'll find it. Also, do you drink soda? Try water instead - that can be a big help.

Your weight over the last 5 years may have been going up & down due to growing. I know that this happened a lot with my stepdaughter - she'd grow a few inches taller & her body would get thinner, then awhile later she'd go for a spell without getting taller but would get heavier. She went back & forth with this, even though her diet didn't change. Now that she's 19 and has stopped growing, she's 5'10" tall & a thin 135-140 lbs. Do you think you're done growing at this point? If so, then maybe now you'll be able to get better control of your weight.

I can understand you not wanting to walk to class if it means you're going to show up all sweaty - but is there another time of day that you can walk? Maybe in the morning before you shower, or at the end of the day? Even just a 10-15 minute walk can really help a lot. Or does your school have a gym you can use? Adding a little work with weights can really give you a boost. Try to fit a little cardio and a little weight work in each week.

You don't sound like a whiner at all - you sound just like the rest of us who are here to learn, get support, and drop some weight, whether it's 5 lbs or 150 lbs! Good luck!

Sweetie!! I will tell you what I wish someone had told me when I was YOUR age. Find some type of excercise you ENJOY and can stick with over a lifetime. Mine was and is riding a bike. Yours just may be the walking!!

Having to tackle a hill everyday is a MAJOR bummer!! But, just think, that hill may be the KEY in you losing a few pounds!! Make that hill work FOR YOU!! You say it about "kills you," well, keep at it, and think of how proud of yourself you will be on the day that hill does not "about kill you!!"

And it WILL happen if you just stick with it!! That hill is working on your muscles, making them stronger and leaner. And it is helping to "melt" and shrink your fat cells, too!!! You just need to make "a molehill out of a mountain!!" (If I may twist around an old adage!!)

Given _to_ fly, keep walking, keep trying, NEVER GIVE UP!! You can do it, I just KNOW YOU CAN!!!!!! You will be just like your name, you will FLY!!!! God Bless you, precious!!!!!

hi fly!

It's amazing. We sound like we are in the same boat!

I am also 18 and I am also going through weight lose issues. Right now I am 5'6" and weigh about 150 lbs. (size 13 pants) Though it might not sound too bad, I still want to lose more weight! What is amusing is I also don't eat red meat , though the occasional chicken, so I know how difficult it can be to try atkins or some other high protein diet.

I have been attempting to cut down to small healthy meals, and I have also began exercising at night (running). I am hoping by doing this I can shed some weight slowly but surely, but mainly i just want to get toned and healthy looking. I'll be rooting for you girl! Both of us can get through this!
