Depending on the food, it takes anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours to be broken down into a form usable by the body. It only "turns to fat" if you are eating more calories than you burn.

so if I ate three slices of pizza @ 12:30pm (ugh, I know!! Its horrible!), and if I go and work out at 5:30pm would most of it already be "fat"?

Thank you, guys!!

it really depends on how much else you've eaten, how fast the food is broken down, etc. What happens with such things as carbs, is that its changed to glucose, and stored in your liver and muscles. Once those stores are full, its changed to fat.

you really shouldnt think of it as "ok if i go to the gym close to when i ate, its better than letting it sit."

thermodynamics is a calories in calories out, theres debates on doing cardio on in a fasted state, but if you take in 3000 cals and do 300 cals worth of exercise, its still 2700 cals as a remainder (im not including cals burn just by living and breathing here)whether you did the cardio close or far from eating.
