I'm convinced we'd all be thinner if we never watched TV, movies, looked at a magazine, or got on the internet. The media tells us that we're overweight and that there's an obesity epidemic (doesn't epidemic mean it has to be contagious? How do you contract weight gain?), the entertainment industry tells how we should look, and just when we're feeling as bad as we can about our bodies, in comes the weight loss industry to tell us about some new pill or diet that will miraculously cause us to lose weight in record time. I'm sick of it. I'm sick of everyone writing a book about how to lose weight. The latest is Dr. Phil preying on the largely female audience of Oprah. Hey Phil, you're not exactly trim yourself. I bet I know more about losing weight than you do, you overrated sellout!
Sorry, I just needed to rant a little.

Seems a lot of us are getting sick of the whole diet pill/weight loss industry. I am still at a point where I don't know what to think. I am just so p****ed at myself for gaining 13 lbs in the last few months. I was happy with the way I looked a year ago and it was hard work getting to that point. WHY did I let myself gain the weight?????????????????? I really can't blame anyone else but myself. BUT you're right with what you say, they are a large part of the whole weightloss problem. Most people start going on diets when they are young teenage girls, but what happens when you go on a 'diet'?? You end up heavier than when you started. You lose 10, gain back 20. I hear it all the time. It's crazy.

epidemic means "out of control" not contagious.
and weight is at epidemic stages, and they don't mean hollywood thin.
It is up to you what you think is okay or not, how much tv you watch etc.
and obese is judged more by body fat percetages not pounds...you can be low weight high % bodyfat and that is what they are talking about.
thanks to all the processed foods and fast foods..and less exercise amoung all.
weight loss is also a multi million dollar industry so of course there will be lots of stuff on it...and everyone wants the quick way easy way to lose.
hard work and dedication is the only thing that keeps one in shape.
and it isn't pounds but overall fitness i am talking about.

I get disgusted because there seems to be no end to it all! For every diet pill that doesn't work; there are atleast 20 new ones that claim to be the "miracle pill". When does it ever stop? I'll tell you when: it's when we as the consumers stop buying into the dream that a pill is going to cure us. I know that there are plenty of people who benefit from some of these drugs; but for how long? The weight comes back; we search for yet another pill. The cycle is vicious! I'll tell you one thing; these manufacturer's are playing with millions of lives; and I refuse to let them play with mine! I'll take great satisfaction in telling my friends that I lost my weight by taking accountability for myself and that I don't owe it to any little pill!

I think when people say this country is obese, they are correct. It is the most obese country in the world. If you go out in public to a mall for example (and I live in Virginia in case anyone anyone is wondering) I see more very overweight people than healthy people. It is actually very sad. Even when going out to eat, or movies, anywhere, people are just getting out of control with weight. And yes I agree that many in Hollywood are too thin, unhealthy thin. That is just the other end of the unhealthy spectrum. It just seems like we are a very unhealthy country these days and I think everyone is starting to notice except all of the fast food chains who still keep pushing the fatty foods and the people who continuously keep buying it.

I agree... The industry is making HUGE buck off of all the overweight people in America; That being said, I have to laugh when I hear about things like people doing a lawsuit against McDonalds for "making" them fat. OMG, I don't know about the rest of you, but I know that I was the one who made me fat- not anyone else. No one forced me to have poor eating habits, no one made me not exercise. Good grief! And, while I don't like Dr. Phil (I agree that he is a pompous, overbearing @$$) He is right is saying that WE are solely responsible. Unfortunately, we are (and I am talking both Canada and U.S. here) a nation of "pin the blame" on anyone.

Anytime I go to Walmart, I'm amazed at how many overweight people I see and how overweight they are. These people can't all have thyroid problems or be on anti-depression medication. I hate my extra weight but anytime I feel fat, I just go to some public place like a mall or grocery store. Seeing how much more overweight people are compared to me always makes me feel better about my weight.

Donuts...glad to see you around.
I'll totally agree with you. The diet industry makes billions hand over fist on diet products that don't work; of course all of the packaging says that with proper diet and exercise...well with proper diet and exercise you're going to lose the weight without the product most of the time.
I know there are people on this board that are watching Dr. Phil and really like him... but is he saying anything that we ALREADY don't know? And to see he EVEN has diet products on the market. Yes, he's cashing in on the industry too. He's disgustig and he could stand to shed some pounds himself!
About those public places, and seeing so many over weight people; it certainly always makes me feel much better about the way I look and that all I have to lose is the extra 15 I've got left.
Have you ever noticed what's in some of these people's shopping carts that are overweight? Need I say more?

this coming from someone whos taken every supplement, bodybuilding, weight loss, etc for 10 years. i dont blame the industries for trying to make money, i dont blame the media for portraying beauty or being loved a certain way. i blame myself. ive studied nutrition, personal training, trends, fads, and yet i still have fallen for a few (way less over the last few years). nobody wants to get the basics down first, then maybe try to take it a bit further with supplements and fads. they want to go right to the "magic bullet" pill, or cream, or quick fix diet. in the several big name vitamin stores ive worked at, ive seen hundreds of people do this. im a union actor, so ive worked in an industry where 45 year olds are try to look 25, and act like the are 19. ive been 40 lbs heavier than i am now, my brother is 5'9 and 290 lbs, in fact my whole family has obesity in it. i feel like ive been through the ringer with all this wanted to look and feel and be percieved a certian way. i guess im just venting!

Ditto!!! I actually feel guilty about how fat I think I am when I go to walmart and see someone so heavy they can barely walk, they have to hunch over and lean on their cart the whole time. And what are their grocery carts filled with?? Soda, Cereal, cookies, popcorn, icecream, Cereal, bread, chips. It's crazy out of control. I feel sorry for the kids that walk next to them, that are about 10 years old and weigh more than me. Poor kids. Just think about the struggle that lays ahead of them!!

I wasn't blaming any of these industries either. Ultimately, I think the responsibility lies with the people who aren't taking care of themselves. I get sick of people who blame marketing for getting them hooked on cigarettes or fast food. We're a nation of victims where no one wants to own up to their mistakes. I was just commenting on the huge disconnect there is between entertainment and real life. It's always been there, but it seems so much bigger now than it was just 10 years ago. I also felt the need to vent about people like Dr. Phil who'll gladly profit off of other people's insecurities.

Yes, we do have ourselves to blame. However, we should consider the fact that science and the medical profession tell us things that just aren't true, thereby sending us down the wrong road. We think we are doing the right thing by going low or no fat, then they decide it is the carbs, not the fat, that are to blame. So then we all get on the band wagon and try again, and again, and again. Maybe if they would get it right it would help us all.
As for Dr. Phil, I think his program could actually cause harm. When people start trying to analyze themselves they can stir up some real emotional problems. It is entirely possible that some could go over the edge.
I notice he is not only trying to sell books, but is actually selling DIET PILLS and supplements. This man is out to make himself a millionaire many times over on the backs of those of us who need some real help. Do you think he really cares about you? He is arrogant and really full of himself.
Talk about ranting...ha.
