Hi!

In my efforts to eat healthier and lose a little weight in the process, I could use some advice when it comes to salad dressings ... I was at Wendy's yesterday and got a caesar salad ( I asked for a pack of the regular Caesar dressing and a pack of the Light Ranch dressing to compare.)
Here's my dilemna ... I have learned the hard way to be weary of fat free or low fat items because of what they add to take away fat or calories.

The Light dressing had 50 less calories, 8 less fat grams (1 less saturated fat), 5 mg less of cholesterol BUT it is higher in sodium and has 6 carbs as opposed to the regular dressing's 1 carb.

My question is, when it comes to weight management, should I opt for the Light Dressing or the Regular??? I hate the carbs vs. calories debate!

(I know no dressing is best but that isn't happening and at least this way I'm not eating fries!)

Advice anyone???

I like to keep my salad dressing very simple and very healthy, i.e.,

A mixture of 1 tablespoon of Extra Virgin Olive oil and 1 tablespoon of Red Wine Vinegar.

Calories = 125
Total Fat = 14 g (Saturated Fat = 2 g, Polyunsaturated Fat = 1 g, Monounsaturated Fat = 11 g)
Cholesterol = zero
Sodium = 5 mg

Extra Virgin Olive Oil is one of the great dietary supplements, IMO. I usually add an extra tabelspoon of EVOO (along with a tablespoon of Flax Seed Oil) to my 'get out of bed first thing in the morning protein shake'.

I second that! I make my own with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and fresh garlic and some herbs. I jujst shake it up in a jar. It's yummy and good for you!

I find that the lowfat/ calorie varieties have too much sugar. Sometimes it's hidden, but it's in there.

I guess it depends on if you're counting calories or carbs. I would choose the one that had fewer calories because I need to stay under 1300 calories a day. If you're doing low carb, then definately the one with only 1 carb.

Look for Walden Farms Dressings. I bought mine off the web. Zero cal, Zero fat, Zero carb. And actually tastes pretty good.

Otherwise I make my own dressing with the olive oil, like the other posters. But my all time favorite dressing is Kraft Light Done Right Catalina. Or if I eat a salad at subway I ask for the sweet onion dressing they have in the squeeze bottle instead of the packet stuff. Low cal, fat free, and 8 carbs I think. Also their honey dijon is the same.

But if I eat out at a fast food restaurant I generally ask for the light salad dressings over the full fat dressings.

Annies Naturals makes a nice low fat honey dijon vinegrette -- 2TBS for 45 calories.

otherwise... i'd make my own also.. olive oil, vinigar of some kind (usually rasberry or redwine) sometimes I add a bit of soy sauce, or some mustard :)

You guys are the best! One of my biggest problems with dieting is the lack of variety when you're cutting things out ... Thanks for giving me some stuff to experiment with!

Thanks Again!
