Just in case something funky was going on with the post....
Hey,
I'm just wondering how many calories everyone eats? When I'm die-hard dieting, I usually stay between 1200-1300, but have often wondered if its too low because I get a LOT of headaches when I'm dieting. I did that thing that roni posted yesterday on one of the millions of challenge thread and it said I should never go under 1650 at my current weight (depending on exercise I should loose easily at this level). So....I'm just wondering...do any of you set your calories this high? And does it work for you? I also don't lose very fast even when i'm die-hard, do i'm wondering if i just have enough muscle that it's like a less muscular person eating 900 calories...yuh know what i mean? well, i've been thinking about uping it, but i'd really like to know what you guys do before i really decide.

Ok, calories is kinda my thing. I still haven't done that thing Roni posted but I will after lunch :)

Last summer when I lost 30 lbs I averaged between 800-1200 calories per day and I was losing steady. Right now I try to stay under 1200. Let me go to lunch and then I'll come back and post what that thingy says I should be at...

:D

I still can't read the other one, but I see it got bumped up!! Can anyone else read it??

hey shel...i was able to open it just now...

as far as my cals are going i think i am averaging 1000-1200 mostly right around 1000...i am always trying to save a few because i am afraid i will get hungry later in the day and dont want to run out of cals so i end up not eating the full 1200!!

I just wanted to post this one here, so that the other can just fall down on the list...

Originally posted by Lindarella:
Everyone probably does it a little differently depending on our situations. I think a major factor is how much you weigh to begin with. If you weigh more, you can eat more calories and lose. Another major factor is exercise. Exercise a lot, you can eat more calories. But either way, when you're close to your goal, you have to eat less calories or exercise more or both and even then, it comes off much slower.

Personally, I had 25 pounds to lose and lost 35. I went from 156 to 121. I kept track of every single calorie at www.fitday.com. (http://www.fitday.com.) I ate 1200 calories a day, every single day. I did zero exercise.

Since I've lost the weight, I eat between 1300-1400 calories a day to maintain. Zero exercise.

Now I'm sure I could have ate more if I'd have exercised OR I could have still ate 1200 calories a day and just lost faster.

My philosophy was this: I don't know one person, nor have I ever known one person, in my entire life that exercises on a regular basis and has been doing it for years. Not one person, and I'm 43 years old. Now sure I've known people who do exercise but I'd guess over 90% of them were trying to lose weight and eventually quit. I didn't want to use exercise to burn calories as I know I'd never keep on doing it forever. I was very realistic with the way I know I am, which is too lazy to keep up an exercise regime for years. :)

I choose to only use calorie control. As a consequence of this. I can't eat much because I'm not burning much. But that's ok with me as I'm not going to exercise. HA! I'm not saying this is right or healthy or any other thing. I'm just telling you how I did it. :)

If I set my calories at 1650, I'd gain, no doubt. But again, I don't exercise. I didn't get headaches.

Good luck to you happy.

Thanks Linderella, Snoopy and Shel (anxiously awaiting the rest :) ) and :D heehee AP...seriously it's like reading novels per day! It's great, tons of motivation, but it must be like a full time job for you to be replying to everyone!
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't gain at that level because I haven't gained in years, even when I'm eating pretty crappy. Since my daughter was born I feel like I'm on the lose 5 lbs in 6 years plan. I lose, but VERY slowly. My current weight is 189.5 (according to my new oh-so-evil-and-accurate scale), and I do try to exercise (i know it will stop Linderella...no truer words were spoken, but i figure its a way to get it off! :) ) and I have a 5 year old so even when i dont REALLY exercise, there is at least 1/2 hour of park play time a day. So, the main thing is the headaches....its really affecting me b/c i just can't do the tons of things i gotta do...or at least i can't do them as fast...AND i can pretty much forget exercising when i want to throw my head in the compactor! so , i don't know. i think i'm gonna try it for a couple of weeks at least, but i'm still very interested to know what all of you do... :D

Ok, let me post this and then I'll go back and read what everyone else said (incase I get caught, lol)

6. My RMR is 1464.5

7. Maintenance is 1757.4

But just to be safe I think I'll stick with the 1200 calories or less days, and have my 'cheat days' be the Maintanance number!!!

I LOVE Lindarella's story. Makes me believe that it can happen. Oh and with my numbers I chose the 'i don't do any exercise' number for step 7, but I do go through phases of working out every day for a month, and then I get bored and quit for a while.

And 5'4" = 64 inches right? if not I have to go back and do it over, LOL.

:)

although total calories based on height/weight/activity level is important. WHAT you eat is also important.

i think if 2 idential people are given:

#1 eats 1200 cals coming from fast food and sugar

#2 has 1500 from lean protein, low glycemic carbs, and healthy fats

i think person #2 even though they are eating more calories, the type of foods eaten have impact as well.

Hi Happyphantom! I'm wondering if because you're eating fewer calories now, you're not getting something that your body needs, like a vitamin or something and it's giving you headaches. Do you take vitamins? Just a thought.
I'm very frustrated right now. I'm eating about 1300 calories a day and walking a lot, but I'm gaining weight!! ARG, I hate this!! I just started taking CLA yesterday, and it hasn't done anything for my appetite yet, but we'll see. Hopefully in a few weeks I can start seeing some results.
Good luck with everything! :)

Yup...I take an the active women multi form one-a-day, calcium (cuz my dr was giving me greif), and kelp (cuz i don't eat iodized salt). And I tend to eat really healthy (my friends swear they've gained time on their life if i cook them dinner) most of the time (obviously we all have our downfalls). So, I agree the quality of your diet matters, but besides going completely organic (which i can't afford) I'm pretty sure I couldn't eat much healthier most days.
Thanks for your thoughts! It's hard to keep EVERYTHING in perspective, isn't it?
Shel - the 1650 for me was the RMR or whatever that acronym was...but it said i shouldn't go below that. I multiplied a couple of different for the xercise. So on 1200 do you exercise? And do you feel ok if you do? I've been trying to exercise to burn 300-400 calories a day, and was only eating 1200, but not much luck....

That's great that you eat so well. I try to do the same. I think you're doing everything right, so I'm sorry that your headaches are so bad. Have you talked to you dr. about it?

HP, I did exercise last summer when I was losing and only consuming 800-1200 calories a day! I was very dedicated I would do a walk/run/walk of 3-4 miles. BUT I didn't start the exercise routine until I had already lost 20 lbs just counting calories. I think exercise is very important, I just don't have the willpower to do it anymore. Wish I did. And I totally felt fine, but I wasn't cutting out any foods, just counting calories.

I totally agree with you on this, but I eat out 2 days a week, sometimes it's fast food and sometimes it's not. I'm not saying that eating like that every day is healthy, but once a week isn't terrible and if you stay under your calorie limit you won't pay for it on the scales the next day. If I eat at McD's or some where I try to order a salad or just a sandwich and not get the whole meal/fries. But once in a while i do splurge and get the fries.

When I'm dieting I usually stay between 1,000 - 1,300 calories a day. But if I go over 1,300 by a little I don't get too upset b/c I'm supposed to eating around 1,500.

I just don't get how many cals I'm supposed to eat! i'm 23 and although I have a desk job, I am pretty active. I go to the gym at least 3 days a week, but normally 4-5 days, and I eat 80-90% very healthy and I've even started counting cals on fitday. According to fitday, without even going to the gym or moving I burn enough cals to eat at least 1500 cals a day and not gain weight. But I do! I have been eating around 1400 cals/day and going to the gym regularly and have lost nothing!

any help I would absolutely love!!!!

list a typical days diet. it may be easy to pinpoint aspects of your diet that are holding you back.

Keilani
10-06-2003, 02:49 PM
Hi Roboto...I'm assuming you were asking moi to list what I eat, so here goes...

Breakfast...a bowl of Special K with fresh strawberries and fatfree soymilk or a piece of wholewheat toast with peanut butter....and plain tea or OJ.

Snack...soy yogurt (100 cals) or a piece of fruit.

Lunch...salad with veggies and either a bowl of veggie soup or a 1/2c pasta or a small piece of fish

Dinner...never over 500 cals, usually 1/2 c pasta and a salad or tofu/broccoli/brown rice.

Dessert...(if I have it)....toffuti (120 cals)

I eat soy products mostly, if I go out to eat I might have a salad with a bit of cheese on it though. My cals usually total around 1400. I get plenty of exercise.

I was just told by my friend who's a personal trainer that I've plateaued b/c I'm not eating enough to keep my metabolism going and that I need to eat around 400 cals more each day (slowly increased) to give me the energy to burn off fat. Is this true? I've read some about this but it's hard to figure out if the problem is too little or too many cals. I'd hate to eat more and gain more, but it does make sense.

Anyone know about eating more to lose more when you've reached a plateau?

girlygirly

Keilani,

I noticed that you mentioned that you eat alot of soy products. Soy has been known to inhibit thyroid function. You might want to do a search on soy, you might be surprised at how it isn't the "health" food that it is marketed as. Soy can also intefere with your menstrual cycles. I ate soy not knowing and my periods came twice a month, and I do now have a thyroid problem, I can't say that soy gave me the thryoid problem, but I think that it contributed. The bad news is that soy is in everything, but I only eat whole foods, mostly organic.

To the poster who said that it is too expensive to eat organic..Pay now or pay later. Seriously though,if there is a Whole Foods Market near you or a Trader Joes, then you might want to stop in as they have Excellent prices. I went for the first time 3 weeks ago and the the selection is great. I feel that their prices were equal to a regular supermarket, the only thing that was priced alittle higher was the meats and fish. But they are soooooooooooo good.

Keilani

Girlygirly,

Thanks for the tip! I will definitely look into that. I eat a lot of soy b/c I'm a newly found to be lactose intolerant and I guess I just need to get lactaid. In any case, even when I had regular dairy I had the same problem. I hate plateaus! I'm already hungry eating just 1400 cals/ day so I'm wondering do I eat more for a few days, or lower to 1200 instead?

Keilani
10-06-2003, 03:39 PM
I have to add that i definitely agree....Trader Joes and Whole Foods are wonderful. TJ's is less expensive, but Whole Foods has a great produce section. If anyone lives in the Bay Area, Berkeley Bowl is a phenomenon in grocery stores....the largest selection of produce and bulked foods I have ever seen, literally. Anyone heard of a citrus fruit called "Buddha's Hand?"

Shel,
I was wondering what you ate when you were consuming 800-1200 cals a day. What kept you from not eating the full 1200? Were you hungry all the time?
I could eat throughout the whole day, and sometimes I do, because I get really bad hunger pangs if I don't. Although, I still try to not go over 1400. I eat a lot of veggies, so that I just have something in my mouth! It's terrible, I can't stop.
I've been taking CLA, but it does nothing for my appetite. Any suggestions??

if you are eating too little, your are metabolizing less food, therefore you metabolism is slower. you could try to up calories, maybe in the form of protein or healthy fat. one of those things where its trial and error. i dont know how much sugar you eat, but that could be a factor as well.

Breakfast...a bowl of Special K(suagr) with fresh strawberries(saugar) and fatfree soymilk (suagr)or a piece of wholewheat toast with peanut butter....and plain tea or OJ (sugar).

Snack...soy yogurt (sugar)(100 cals) or a piece of fruit. (sugar)

Lunch...salad with veggies and either a bowl of veggie soup or a 1/2c pasta or a small piece of fish

Dinner...never over 500 cals, usually 1/2 c pasta and a salad or tofu/broccoli/brown rice.

Dessert...(if I have it)....toffuti (sugar)(120 cals)

maybe subsititute some of the sugar foods with non sugary foods. sugar has an impact on insulin levels etc.

Geez, I just posted this and it didn't come through. I'll try again.

I wasn't working at the time so I would get up and work out and then eat breakfast late, usually cereal with skim milk. Then I'd eat lunch late, usually tomoatoes and light done right catalina OR a sandwich w/ only mustard. For dinner I'd have either a lean cuisine or something off the grill. I was taking Xtreme Lean pills from Walmart, it really kept me from getting hungry and gave me all sorts of energy. I am trying to do it this time with NO pills. (it sucks).

I am not saying this diet was healthy. But it worked for me at the time. I lost 30 lbs from May to October. If I could do it again I would, but I just don't have the willpower :(.

Good Luck to you!!

~ Shel

Woohoo Trader Joes!! I could LIVE in that place! I'm excited because they just started building one FIVE MINUTES away from me walking YAY! I'm lucky though, because I live in a very "alternative" area of Seattle, so I've got two organic markets within a 10 minute walking distance :)

sarhay-
i just wanted to tell you that CLA is not an appetite suppressant, so that is why you aren't seeing a decrease in appetite. It is basically like any other vitamin you take- for example: if you don't get enough fiber, you take a fiber supplement, if you don't get enough iron, you take an iron supplement.

Sarhay
10-06-2003, 11:21 PM
notorious b,
I know it's not an appetite suppressant, but do you think I could take something else along with it that would do the trick? Or should I just switch to something else completely that has an appetite suppressant already in it? I'm always leary about mixing pills!

happy, by any chance did you stop drinking soda, tea, coffee or decafinated drinks? This will bring on MAJOR headaches as caffine dialates(makes bigger) the blood vessels in your brain. When you stop caffine abruptly, you'll usually get RAGING headaches for awhile due to caffine withdrawl. It will go away with time if this is the case.

I drink ALOT of coffee. Probably a couple pots a day. It doesn't make me any more active though as I've done this for 20 years or so.

Hi Linderella!
Ah, you guys are sweet to keep racking your brain for me! I actually RARELY drink soda...I just don't like it. I have 1 cup of coffee about 3-5 times a week and I usually only drink herbal tea (no caffeine). Mostly I drink water, always have (too bad I coudln't have gone cold-turkey from soda a lost a bunch!) I've been eating about 1500 this week and so far no headaches. I gained about 1 LB over the weekend (on a little mini-vacation...too many chips and cookies! very little exrecise!) but 1/2 of it is already gone. Yesterday I ate almost exactly 1500 calories and just did about 30 minutes of the NYC ballet workout and i'm down that 1/2 LB. So far, I guess its going pretty well, but I'll keep you all updated...especially for those of you who are wondering what would happen if you uped your calories. Thanks for all the input! :)
