(I was diagnosed with PCOS about 1996, but would now like to consider treatment for it for the symptoms discussed below)

who can diagnose and treat PCOS? I know an endocronologist can, but what about a gynecologist? We don't have many endocronologists in our area.

Second question: what can I expect a doctor to prescribe for hair loss and gain related to PCOS. Does the birth control pill help prevent male pattern hair loss? or is it just spironolactone?

I am looking for a doctor now and would like to have some info before setting up an appointment.

Thanks for your help

A gyno would be iffy because they may know some about PCOS but mabe not enough to properly treat you. Endocronologist will be your best bet. Matter of fact I am waiting to a referral to see and RE(Reproductive Endocronologist) because it looks like I have PCOS. My regular doctor started to treat me but realized it would be better for me to see and RE.

The BCP might help but again that is where a doctor comes in handy.

Sometimes the BCP will not help with PCOS, as a lot of PCOS is due to what is known as insulin resistance. This means that your body is unable to utilise the insulin that is around, so Metformin is usually the drug of choice to help this and people notice an improvement on this. This needs to be combined with dietary measures also, such as diet and exercise to loose weight if you need to.

You need to get all your hormone levels checked, such as estrogen, progesterone, Lutenising hormone and follicle stimulating hormone and also get blood sugar levels checked to see what kind of treatment you need. Also, an ultrasound scan of your belly will pick up ovarian cysts.

Go to your doc and get all these tests done first and then take it from there.
