Hi,
I usually spot for three or four days before my actual menstrual flow starts. Do I count the first day of spotting as the first day of my period, or is my first day when the actual flow starts? My spotting consists of a light pink to dark brown discharge for a few days, and then I start cramping up and bleeding. Anyone get this?

Are you on the pill? Cos' occasionally I will spot a few days before my period break (especially when I've skipped previous periods by continuous BCP) before I get a short, minor cramp and heavier flow that indicates my period starting properly.
Usually the second and third days of period will be heaviest, but sometimes periods just won't follow rules!

Nope, not on the pill. I was just trying to figure out which would be considered the first day of my period...when spotting starts, or my actual flow. I'm 39, and when I was a little younger, my periods used to just start, with no spotting. Now, in recent months, I've had spotting first.

This is exactly what is happening to me now (also not on the pill). I used to just start but for the second month in a row I have exactly the same scenario (light to dark discharge for a few days then full blown flow). I'm 41 now--is this just something that happens with age?
Does anyone know?

I don't know...I'm just really interested to find out which I should count as the first day of my period....spotting, or full-blown flow. I asked some friends and none of them are sure, and I feel too stupid to call my doctor's office to ask that queation. Glad to see I'm not alone, though. Maybe it does have to do with age.

You count the first day of full on flow not the spotting. The spotting is left over blood from your previous cycle and doesnt count toward the next cycle.

that's how my period always was until i got a hormonal imbalance then it started to come bright red and in a gush. But for like the last 10 years exactly as you described....it always annoyed me because my underwear would get ruined, but it was nice to know that i had a day or so before my period really started....time enough to go out buy pads etc ;-)

yes, anytype of blood flow, red or brown, light or heavy you count as your first day of your period.
