I also started taking alesse recently. I stwitched from ortho cyclen and I am on my second week. I am also experiencing some mood swings. I called my MD and she said that it is a common side effect. She recommended that I take it for 3 months because according to her these side effects often stop after a while. So I am going to wait and see. I am also experiencing some hair loss.

you know what is soo weird? i called my doc office today and the nurse said that depression and mood swings are not listed as one of the symptoms for alesse!
moodieness seems to be the only side effect that i seem to be having (so far)

yes, they don't list depression as a side effect. But many people experience it while on the pill. Did your doctor tell you to stop taking it? You have only taken it for 4 days, and it takes at least one cycle for your body to get adjusted to it.

yes she said to continue taking it until i finish the pack, she also said that it was too soon for me to start having symptoms! i guess i'll just have to wait
but in general do you like the pill?

I am sorry to tell you but the information your nurse is giving you is wrong. All hormonal contraceptives cause mood swings, they vary from patient to patient. You are altering your hormones, same idea when you have PMS or are pregnant. They should subside, sometimes they don't. That's when you look for another pill. I am on Alesse and I have had mood swings, it varies though. You CAN have side effects from the pill that quickly. Good luck to you!!!

hi mona,
So far I don't like alesse because of the mood swings and the hairloss that i am experiencing. However it is too early to stop and give up on it, so I am going to complete the 3 months trial period and see if the side effects stop or get better. We should keep each other posted.

I'm on my third kind of bcp, after nearly two years of taking them (I'm 28). I started out with allese, but I couldn't take the depression and mood swings for the three months you're supposed to give it for your body to adjust. A month later I was switched to Ortho-Tricyclen. I was on that for nearly a year, until my next yearly appointment. I told my doctor that I was still experiencing moodiness, and I had developed an even shorter fuse than I had previously had (I have a nasty temper already. I don't need it to be worse). So I was switched to Yasmin, which I am currently on. When I go back to the doctor, I'll ask again about a different prescription, as my boiling point is still really low, and it's so much worse when I'm stressed (which is most of the time). Good thing for my I have a very laid-back and understanding boyfriend who's stuck with me for almost three years, two of which I've been a nutcase.
I'm a little concerned, though, because the last time I mentioned my issues to my doctor, she said I may want to try a different form of bc, since pills don't seem to be working much for me. I don't want to do depo, based on the horror stories I've heard, nor do I want a diaphram or iud. Taking the pill is fine for me, I've only forgotten twice in two years, so the routine isn't an issue. So I would be perfectly willing to try a different pill, as I know there are a lot out there. As I've only tried three, I wonder why she's so keen to put me on something else entirely.
Not to skew the topic at hand, but if anyone has any advice, I'd be greatful.

have you thought about the patch? i think its the next one i'm going to try becasue i'm too moody on allese
my only thing is that i've been on it only for a week or so can the depression and moodiness happen that quick?

In my case, I had a quick reaction. Perhaps because I'd never taken bcps before, I don't know. All I know is that after several nights, huddled under my covers, crying, fearing my future and the world at large, I'd had enough. I don't even think I was on it for an entire month.
Haven't tried the patch yet, but it may be my next venture.

hi mona,
If the symptoms that you are having are so intolerable, then give your doctor a call and tell him/her that you want to stop. I think you are better off tellinh him/her first since they are aware of your medical histoty and are in a better position to give you advice. If you can handle it, then you really should try to finish at least this pack. It will be easier for your body to adjust if you do this.
Also, I wanted to let you know I am felling my better now. I am on the 3rd week of my first pack of alesse, and I am not as moody anymore. My skin is clear(although it was also clear when I was on ortho cyclen), and the hairloss is far less intense. I have not gained any weight from this pill. But best of all, I haven't had pain in about 2 weeks. I have endo wich causes me almost daily pain. This is the reason why my doctor wanted me to try alesse. I am still going to finish the 3 months trial period and see if the mood swings stop(i did not have them when I was on ortho cyclen). Best of luck.
