Hi Michelle -

I don't know how painful your periods will be - I think that is different for every woman.

As far as how long it will take, it can take several months for everything to get back to normal, and at least a year to get pregnant for some women, if that is your goal. Do a search on here for this - there are lots of great threads.

Good luck!

I went off depo awhile ago and switched to the pill because I lost my sex drive. Did that happen to you? Just curious. Also, I went on the pill, Alesse, and found that my periods started out painful (like they always were before depo) and then after time on the pill they lightened significantly.

Depo provera is synthetic medroxyprogesterone acetate, basically a synthetic progesterone given in high doses to trick your ovaries into believing that you are pregnant and thereby stopping you from ovulating. I have seen at least five women who after they stopped the injections not have a period for 1 year. I have also seen menses not return until after one year whatever happens, everyone responds differently to the onslaught of synthetic hormones. It also depends on how well you liver is working, and how healthy you are, the faster the hormones will be excreted by you.

Hi Michelle,

I was on the shot for 3 1/2 years. I got my last shot in November and have yet to have a period. Yes, I lost my sex drive, was tired all the time, and gained weight. I'm sure everyone is different.

I was on the depo for 3 1/2 yrs. I think it is the worst method known. I gained lots of weight and alot of other things but when I stopped it my period never came so the Dr. put me on the pill to regulate periods, which did when I got to the non-active pills and after that period I stopped the pills and my period continued. But it took over a yr & half to get pregnant.
As for the weight, I excercised and was very active. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/bouncing.gif Ate right and still gained but once I went off I continued my health style and lost it all.

Hi,
I am 26 and was on depo since I was 20. I quit taking depo back in January and went on the pill. I am taking Mircette. It took I think 2 full packs before I got a period. I think it was the end of April that I did get a period, then the next month I didnt get one, then the month after, I did.
This past one I did not get one because I skipped the last week of pills and went straight to the next pack.
I quit taking depo because of the weight gain. I am 5'8, and in January I weighed around 195 http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif Now, I am down to 185. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif And that was after going off the shot. I've also cut back on my french fries and hamburgers and soda pop, which I think has contributed.
