View Full Version : Mirena IUD

Hi, I had the Mirena IUD inserted 10 days ago on my doctor's advice. Apparently it has been shown to be very effective in reducing the symptoms of endometriosis. However, since I have had it in I have been bleeding continuously and have really bad cramps. I do have my period as well but this is very much worse than usual.
Anyone out there any any experience with Mirena IUD?
Thanks CAS

Hi,

I had a copper type IUD which I ended up having removed due to an ectopic pregnancy that was facilitated by it's use. Although I don't have personal experience with the Mirena IUD, I have heard about side effects on it during it's use. That aside, when women contact me regarding my website (do an internet search under: "An ectopic pregnancy: The failue of my IUD") they often ask me what birth control they can use if they have adverse reactions to the pill. I often tell them to try Mirena because of the addition of hormones (the copper type doesn't have this) and the higher probability that pregnancy will not occur.

After reviewing several message boards on IUD's, one major side effect that happens in some women is that they have continuous bleeding. In some women this does go away in time - in other women, they elect to get the IUD removed because their sick of the constant bleeding and it doesn't seem to stop for them. I guess the call is yours - you can keep it in and see if it stops on it's own, or you can have it removed.

I would hold out for a bit longer. Especially if you have your period, the continued bleeding does not sound too big of an issue (yet).

If you're still bleeding in a week, though, the IUD may not be for you...

I'm considering having the Mirena inserted, but one big concern is Acne. Has anyone had problems w/worsening acne after insertion?

For the past couple of years I have taken Yasmin (a combination pill) and my skin has really cleared up, but it has made me crazy with PMS. I'm almost 37, so the thought of having breakouts again is very depressing.

Thanks for any comments on this.

 Hi everyone I'm a newbie. I had the Mirena inserted one day before my period stated. Doc felt it was a good idea because of ovarian cysts, heavy periods, bad cramping. So far all I have is really bad lower back pain. No pain in usual lower left abdomen. I would hold out on getting it removed as your body needs to adjust to something foriegn plus new hormones. I just keep in mind the warning sighns. Fever, Really bad cramps, or unusual discharge. Keeping my fingers crossed! Anyone experiencing lower back pain like me? Bye, Kim
please let me know if anyone else has the lower back pain upon recievin Mirena IUD? Thanks

I had the mirena inserted almost 2 1/2 years ago 2 months after having my fourth baby. I spotted for about a week. I was breastfeeding at the time and never got my period after insertion. Talked to my doctor and was told that 25% of women will not get their periods at all. I guess I was lucky! I do not have any cramping except for what I suspect is ovulation.

I had mirena fitted over a year ago when diag with endometriosis. Everything was going ok untill after about 3 months when symptoms returned and have been getting worse since. Am seeing gyno end of year to have it removed.

Although the mirena has very low dose of hormones there is still estrogen which stimulates the endo.

I have several friends however who have used mirena with no probs although they do not have endo.

I got my Paraguard (copper IUD) inserted about 2-3 weeks ago and I dont have nay bad symptoms but yes lower back pain. By lower I mean really low..I feel it really bad in my tailbone kinda. Almost like my tailbone is brusied. Everytime I get up after I have been sitting it kills me. I was wondering myself if this was connected to the IUD since it started around a day or two after my IUD insertion. Is this the same kind of lower back pain you are experiencing? let me know.

Absoultley! Same thing when I stand up there is major pressure in my back and lower abdomen, I guess it's just foriegn to the body and it will take some time to adjust. I'm happy that my symtoms aren't in my head! I'm still bleeding day 15! And the Mirena has changed my cycle, not supposed to have period till 11th, mine started yesterday. When I as pre  gnant 8 mos ago I had horrible Migranes, Doc said it was hormone related. Couldn't do Low estrogen birth control because of that reason. Now they have returned. I'm bummed! I want this to work, or it's hysterectomy time! I'm only 39. Don't want menopase. Take Care all! KB

I have a Paragard (copper IUD). After I went off horomonal birth control (no BC for a year) I noticed the cramps/aches that I get with my period are mostly in my lower back, having gotten the IUD inserted seems to have amplified this phenomenon.

I had a mirena inserted a couple weeks ago - just as I was ending my period.
Since then - I have been 'spotting' but I no longer have my period. Does anyone know how long this spotting/bleeding thing lasts for?

Check your guide, I had it inserted on the 9th and I'm still bleeding and it's Christmas. It also changed my cycle, I started that yesterday wasn't supposed to start until 11th.
I could tell it was a cycle due to heavy back pain and cramping. Some women don't bleed at all. Some bleed non-stop that is why they get it removed. My Doc said I would bleed heavy for a few days than I would spot for a week or two? They only predict. Let's keep eachother updated.

Hi Ladies,
I've got killer Migraines starting at the beginning of my cycle. That's why we tried Mirena? Even the lowest dose of etrogen were setting them off! Is it labotomy time? Could it be in my head? LOL, oh, that hurts. Put a call into doc but, has anyone experienced these migraines with birth control? If I keep complaning I feel he will do the hysterectomy! Yikes. Any thought's, I've done inderale, imitrex, you name it the only thing that makes it barable is Fioracet and Motrin. Thanks, Ladies..

Thanks for answering my post.
I had mine inserted around the same time. My cycle has always been kinda wonky, but lately i've had some nasty back-pain and cramps. I haven't had a regular period yet, though. Man i hope this goes away soon. It's like PMSing for weeks on end. Midol has been my life-saver as of late. *heh*
Keep in touch. :)

My friend had the same problem - she had hers fitted for endometriosis and she bled for days after and had some very painfull cramps (even worse than the ones she normally had) they made her feel really ill to a point where she was physically sick.
She went back to the doctors and had hers re-fitted and has been fine ever since.
Maybe you should go back to the doctors and ensure everything is ok. Good luck to you xxx

That sounds almost too familiar. I was thinking about waiting a few more weeks - but if her discomforted ended when she had hers refitted, then i'll make an appointment sooner. Thanks.

I had an IUD put in for pain in my belly. That was on the 10th of sep 04 and I have been bleeding since then. Well there were a couple days that it decieved me thinking the period was gone (lack of major blood on tampon) I didn't put a tampon in, and man was that embarrasing. Its now Jan 20th. The reason I had it put in was for pain, thinking that it was endometriosis. I had a laprosopy (spelling?) done and there was no endo but 6 tumors. That was the reason for the continous pain, we thought. Turns out that the pain and the symptoms are coming back. Me and my doc aren't sure what it is but I can't take the bleeding anymore, I went in to have it removed and the doc couldn't find it. I had asked for another ultrasound to make sure that there was no hidden tumors or that they had not started to grow again, because of the symptoms I was having again. (Just a note: the six were not there in June of 03 but were there in march of 04) so I am scared that they are coming back. Anyways, the doc thought that the IUD had fallen out but we did an ultrasound to find it and also to check if things were growing again. Its in my uterus. I have to go in and have it taken out in a surgery room and am getting stressed out. I was wondering if anyone out there has had a similar experience out there. The doc nor my continous research has given us a definate answer on what I have. Starting to get really scared thinking that it might some form of muscle cancer. So if anyone could write and give me any other ideas that would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thank you, Very Worried!

Did somebody say they had this recommended by their doctor for ovarian cysts? I have always been interested in an IUD but I am at a very high risk for multiple ovarian cysts so I always thought I was stuck with the pill as it ceases ovulation and I always understood that with IUD's you still ovulate but it prevents implantation. Does this one have enough hormones to keep one from ovulating?? If anyone knows, help me out will ya'?
Thanks!!

I think that as the horomons act locally in the uterus it can thin the uterine lining so much that menstruation ceases, however, I am not sure that it affects ovulation. You might want to check this one with your doctor.

Hi,
I am a newbie and am having a Mirena IUD put in on the Jan. 31st.
My gyno put me on Yasmin because of pain and cyst on one ovary.
I got the worst migraine that didn't stop until I quit taking the pill (a week).
My question is does anyone else have this IUD and have increased headaches? I am somewhat apprehensive but I have to do something fro the pain.

Thanks,

I was never put on yasmine but I had the IUD put in for pain for what the docs thought was a cyst (turned out to be 6 tumors), I was in really bad pain and on narcotics when I got the IUD. It took a while but it took the edge off the pain, not significantly for me though and I had a lot of headaches from the tumors and after the IUD implantation headaches increased and they were more severe. Now the IUD has gone into my uterus and I have to have a quick surgery next week to get it out. I wouldn't recommend the IUD I have had too many problems with it, but your doctor would know best. I am also on the patch and that helps with the constant bleeding and was put on that to help with the pain as well. The only thing that got rid of most of my pain was surgery. I think I'm looking at a hystorectomy (spelling?).
Good luck to you I hope that I helped a bit and if anyone has had similar experiences as me I would be very interested in knowing what you might have had because we can't figure out why I still have pain. I have no sign of endometriosis but I am thinking I might have andomyosis. Any help would be very welcomed!!! Thanks!

I had mirena fitted nearly 18 months ago after endo was diag. At the start my monthlies were v.light but the pain was still there. Since then I am never without sanitary protection and have finally been advised to have a hysterectomy. What they did not tell me at the start was that I also had adenomyosis and more endo than they were willing to tell me about. i am so angry with my first gyno. I had my 2nd opinion yesturday and he told me that he was surprised that I was told the mirena would help with pain control and was not in the least surprised to find that my bleeding/clotting was returning to the levels I was experiencing before i had mirena fitted.

The mirena is a good method of birth control. That is what it is designed for. For some women it also offers symptom relief associated with bleeding but I do not believe that it should be used as a first-line treatment. If you are looking for symptom relief particularly for endo or adenomyosis, then you should also ask what other alternatives there are for you but it will not cure.

Hi there, I've had the Mirena for about 5 mths. The bleeding at first was very light, infact my doc told me that I would probably bled alot right after the insertion, but I didn't. I started about 2 weeks later and it was off and on from there. But now the bleeding has gotten quite heavy and I am having cramps and feeling bloated, I've also been having having pretty bad headaches the last 3 days, and Ihardly ever have them. I'm wondering if I should go to the doc and have it removed or just wait and see what happens. This is supposed to make all that stuff better, my regular periods aren't this heavy or as painfull. UGH...

AM I ALONE?

ive have got the Mirena IUD and also had heavy bleeding at the beginning and after about 2-3 weeks it stopped for about a week then started again, it was a nightmare, but i carried on with it and now after about 7 months or so (sorry im not sure how long its been) i now have no periods or period symtoms, and it has rerally helped me, i hope that this had helped and stick with it, if you do get worried go back and see your doc, they are the best people to speak to,

I am 33 and had the IUD inserted 1 week ago today, and I have to say that I must be lucky and I can not complain. I was 2 days into my period when it was inserted and I stopped bleeding the next evening. (My doctor will only insert while having your period, though some I have read do it any time) I had some pressure while it was inserted and was light headed immediately after but after I had some water I was fine. I cramped a little bit but took 500mg of motrin and just took it easy that first day, just to make sure all was well. I know that I am only a week in to this, and my view may change ove the coming weeks but at this point I am very happy and to those that have had problems, you have my thoughts and I hope that things get better!!

I had mine inserted April 24th. Every day I think I have done the right thing. Every so often I feel a twinge here or there, but nothing bad. I am on day 9 of my first post insertion period- that part is annoying. I did notneed to be having my period for my doctor to insert it, although I have heard that to be true for other docs.

I have not taken anything for pain or felt anything worth figuring out where the Motrin went off to.

Hi, I am new to the board. I had a Mirena inserted in November and bleeding still hasn't really settled. the Gyny put me on a months dose of extra progesterone as he thought the dose might not be high enough (I had it put in to ease very heavy periods). First period after that lasted 16 days, and now starting to bleed again after 16 days. I don't have any cramping or bloating but just a constant dribble for longer than I want to. Anyone else had one settle down after a long period of spotting?

Hi there. I've just joined the board.

I had Mirena inserted on 14 April (mostly to try and get rid of mid-cycle bleeding/spotting I've had for years). My first period with Mirena was lighter in blood flow, but went on for probably 14 days (normally bleed for about 7).

I got a UTI last week. Went to GP for antibiotics which got rid of the burning. Then developed back pain (thought it was kidney infection). Had to go to hospital for more ABs. I've still got pain in my back on the left hand side (kind of achy). Back to GP today. She's sending me for an ultrasound next week to rule out kidney stones.

Just wondering if other people have had kidney-type pains after having Mirena inserted - and how long they lasted for??

Cheers,
Fiona in Oz

i had a copper IUD removed on monday (surgically) after having it for a year. it had slipped out of where it was supposed to be and was causing my uterus to contract for over 4 months. during that time it had slipped and become stuck in the side of my cervix. my gyno said that it was no longer working and that it was a good thing that i didn't ovulate. he had tried to remove it 3 weeks ago and was unable to do it in the office because he said "it will hurt too much, we are better off to take it out surgically". I had used it to treat my endometriosis and polycystic ovaries as well as a birth control, it worked wonders for preventing the endometriosis and cysts from returning (i didn't get pregnant either). i regret though not listening to everyone that i had talked to about their experiences with the IUD. everyone that i have talked to have had negative experiences with it.

I just wanted to thank everyone for taking the time to post their messages. All of the postings have been extremely helpful in knowing what questions I should be asking the doctor tomorrow for my first consultation. I first read about it in a pregnancy magazine at the doctor's office when I was eight months pregnant. My daughter is now 2 months old and I feel very comfortable with the general pros and cons that seem to be associated with this IUD. I feel a lot more knowledgeable partly due to having read this thread!

Hey guys. This is my first time posting, so bear with me.

I'm 25 years old. Got Mirena IUD inserted April 2005 as a "last resort." I have been on BCP for years until I had a DVT blood clot in December 2001. Taken off of them, got rid of the DVT with treatments.

April 2005 period went from bad to worse...extremely heavy bleeding, passing many blood clots in 30 minutes at a time, loss of blood, and it was just a mess. It happened before back in 1994 and they stuck me on BCP back then. This time around, they put the Mirena IUD in me due to blood clot history. It was either that or do the ablation (spelling?) or another option that would cause me to never have kids.

Before the IUD, they did the biopsy and it was fine. After the IUD, I saw a big change in my overall body. The bleeding stop...well should I say slow down, stopped, and came back. I had the same full heavy bleeding until about September 2005 (5 mths after insertion). Then afterwards until now, I would go bleeding for a week-two weeks at a time every day and then be without a period for a few days and back having a period for a day or two at a time and then stop.

Along with the bleeding, I gained weight (10 lbs) even with exercise and eating right. In July, I started to have low back pain that has yet went away. I also became very sleepy all the time and acne became a huge problem that I hadn't have in years. My legs are also swelling up a lot as compared to before.

Because of my back troubles, I had MRI's done in August, November, and March. All showed cysts on both ovaries. I had ultrasounds as well. In one year, I had a major increase of cysts on my ovaries as compared to beforehand. I do have Polycystic Ovaries but the IUD seemed to make it worse. The GYN that inserted the IUD really didn't have an answer for what was going on and all I got told was "it was normal." Not only that, she tried to get me to use the patch (even knowing I had a history of DVT) and said that it wasn't a big enough dose to cause a blood clot. My pharmacist thought otherwise and the new gyn thought otherwise because the old GYN tried to give me double dose than what is recommended! I don't know what she was doing...and this gyn is supposively highly regarded since she teaches at the local university. Boy were they wrong!

I went to a new GYN and talk about a big difference in care! She's carefully monitoring the cysts, my diet, everything. She did an ultrasound and my uterus lining is too thick and really hasn't thinned any since I've had the IUD last April. She said that she feels the Mirena IUD is doing more harm than good for me given with my past. She tried to manually get the IUD out this past Monday, but without success. She said that the string was cut way too short and it was hard to get a grip on it. She went ahead and did another biopsy to make sure nothing else was going on. All that fooling around in there really was a painful experience.

In a week and a half, she is going to use an ultrasound and then a pair of tweezer like things to pull it out. She said that if that doesn't work, then I will have to have it taken out with an outpatient surgery.

My questions are:
1) Anyone have increase # of cysts being on Mirena IUD?
2) Did anyone have periods pretty much all the time and never stopped?
3) Which was worse, getting the IUD put in or taken out?

My number one piece of advice is to take some pain medicine when you get it inserted and when they do a biopsy because it is a very bad cramp feeling. Have someone to go with you in case you need them to drive or just for general support.

Anyone have any advice of what I should do to help control periods, even with a past history of a DVT caused by BCPs??

Thank you in advance for your help and advice!!

Hi kycountrygirl,

Just wanted to post because I am in the same position as you in that they can't find the strings and Im going in on Monday 3rd July to have it removed with tweezers. Im very worried about the pain, but think that I have to give it a try as it will be easier and quicker than surgery. Ive only had it in for 6 weeks but am so fed up of the pain and stomach aches I have had. Ive also had loads of dizzyness - its a lie that the hormones don't enter your body - they do. Ive started having migraines which I have only ever had on the pill.

Let me know how you get on and wish you all the best with it. It sounds like you have had more than your fair share of problems, hope you start to recover now!

Best wishes

hello! i am new here and would enjoy hearing some advice from other women with mirena. i had mine inserted on 6-13-06 during my cycle. it was painful going in that's for sure! :) anyway, a week later i had what appears to be like a stomach flu with diahhrea and vomitting. that was on tuesday and wednesday of this week. since then i have been nausous on and off. my legs have these weird looking pimples on them (about 9-10) and i have cold sores all over my upper lip. i tried today to feel the threads and wasn't successful. my husband tried and no go either. just today i started to have light brown discharge as well i am worried that something isn't right. either i am just fighting a flu bug or my iud is visiting other areas of the body other than the uterus!

i appreciate any replies!
have a great weekend!

I've had mine in for over a year and love it. I got sick the first week because my body was adjusting but now I get mild cramps and haven't had a period for a year. About the strings, I couldn't find mine either. I went in a month after I got it put in and the dr. checked and it was there but she said that the strings somtimes become wrapped in the uterus and that's fine...nothing to worry about. I hope it helps.

An update here....I went back into the GYN office to see if they could take it out with looking at it with an ultrasound. The ultrasound tech couldn't find it on top of my belly but finally found it somewhat when she looked vaginally. Plus they found another large cyst on my left ovary.

My GYN gets everything ready, shines the light inside and puts the scissor/tweezer looking things in me. I am getting dizzy as as the same time the ultrasound tech is pushing on my stomach to get a better picture on the ultrasound. With my gyn fishing around for the string I was starting to hurt with high pitch pinching pain, nothing like when the IUD was going in there that's for sure! The gyn couldn't reach the string and couldn't find it. She stopped thanks to my much relief.

Soooo....now I have to go and have it surgically removed next Friday. It will be outpatient and I'll be under anesthesia and not feel a thing...thank God.

Has anyone ever had to deal with taking it out surgically? After all of this, I'll never have one placed back in that's for sure!

Hi,
This is my first time writting. Its sad to read so many women feel unwell, but kinda reassuring that my symptoms are not all in my head.
I had my mirena iud inserted in beginning of May 2006 and also had flu like symptoms immeadialty afterwards. My IBS started up after being dormant a year, acne has surfaced, spotting almost daily (only a week or 2 without something), and just generally feeling awful almost daily. Its so strange. I thought I was imagining it all. Being a hypochodriac!
I thought it would be a life saver as I need the hormones for nasty PMS/cramps etc..., but I am thinking that is better than how I feel with my iud ($350 later). Anyone else feel awful almost daily since insertion? Some days are better than others, but generally I feel run down though I take good care of myself. I see the gyn in 2 weeks! Thanks for reading....

Hi
just thought I would add my 2 cents worth to this thread to give some hope to those of you having teething trouble with your Mirena. I had a Mirena inserted early December 2005, age 49, for horrendously heavy periods which only lasted three days but meant I couldn't leave the house and left me anaemic.

I was 'aware' of the IUD for the first few weeks til I had a period and it settled in. That period was a heck of a lot lighter but dragged on for 10 days. Another ten days later I started spotting for about 2 weeks, clear for a week or so then another ten day period. This longterm spotting went on for a while and I was thinking 'this isn't actually any better' and thought about having it out.

In March the gyny gave me a dose of oral progesterone (28days), because he thought the dose in the Mirena might not be enough to stop my bleeding completely. I had a period on Good Friday which lasted 10 days and absolutely nothing since! No adverse symptoms of any kind.

A lot of my friends have them in for different reasons - most have settled down to little or no period after 6-7 months.

I have had 2 IUD's before, in my 20s, and didn't have any trouble, except the last one wasn't in properly and I have my youngest daughter as a result!

So, if you had asked me three months ago whether I would recommend a Mirena, the answer would have been NO! but now I am very happy with it :)

Hi, I posted to KYon this thread before and was sorry to read about you havng an op to remove the mirena. I went to hospital today and they poked around for ages, and really tried to find it, but they couldn't. They scanned me today and saw it is in and in the right place but it looks like the strings are coiled round the bottom of the thing. So I have to have it removed by op also, but this is the NHS and so I have to wait until 11th August.
Good luck for your op and let me know how it goes. Im sure it will be easy. Like you I will not be recommending this and I will never have another one put in!

I had the Mirena IUD inserted June 05 (over a year ago). I am 30 and have had one baby 4 years ago. At first, my periods stopped (light bleeding maybe 2 days a month). But now 16 months later, I have had HORRIBLE side effects. I've gained 20+ pounds over the past 6 months despite working out/eating right. I haven't gained any weight in 10 years, so this is a terrible increase in such a short amount of time. I crave sweets non stop (I'm not a sugar person). Lately, I've had symptoms of being pregnant (lactating, abnormal cravings, trouble sleeping, nausea, back pain, cramping, depression, foul odor). But just yesterday, I began bleeding heavy clots (filling 2 pads in 30 minutes). I went to the ER and they went to remove my IUD and couldn't find it. I had to have people poking, prodding, and finally xrayed and an ultra sound to find it. I have an appt in 2 days to have it surgically removed. Apparantly, my original OBgyn cut the strings too short and they just couldn't find them with their forceps. Regardless, my body is not reacting very well to the hormones. It took over a year for any symptoms to show up, but now that I've read these posts, I guess my quick onset of horrible acne, loss of sex drive, depression, PMS, and loss of energy all have something to do with it as well. I'm hoping that having it removed will take all this away. I haven't been myself in months. Anyone else having strange symptoms like this after so long of having it in?

I had my appt for removal today. It was a simple, pain free process.

I read a lot about the Mirena IUD because I'm going to have it inserted probably next week. It's a fact on their brochure that most women can bleed for 3-6 months in the beginning and then periods will be light or even none existent. It depends on the person. Some women claim they only had spotting for the first 2 months and then nothing or normal to light periods.

I'll let you know what my experience is. All I know is that I'm tired of the battle with weight gain and birth control. I gained 13 lbs in 2 month on the ring and the patch has seriouse side effects now that are concerning me.

Good luck to you!

You can bleed/spot from 3-6 months once the Mirena IUD is inserted. But after that, most women have either normal to light or even no periods at all.

Hang in there!

Hi,

I am new to this, I have read some of the posts about the mirena IUD, I had one put in on the 29th of sep this year. I had to have mine done in surgery, due to them not being able to open my cervix at all due to scar tissue, it hurt like hell them trying to be able to do it in the surgery ended up having two different gyno's in room at same time trying with no avail so surgery was scheduled to do it that way.

Since then I have had a couple of days spotting, which ended up turning into what seems like a proper period. I have had bad cramps and no amount of heat packs hot baths, pain killers help with it, my temp keeps going up and down we go by celcius here, it is mainly above the 37.5 which they say is ok as long as it is that or below, mine is mainly above most of the time.

Today how ever when I had to do ones I got a really bad burning sensation, I have not had one like that before, it has only been 12 days since I have had it inserted so I don't really want to go to doctors in fear I will look a fool. At the same time I have to be really careful. I am scared I may have an infection, I have no sphleen which makes it a bit harder for me with infections and am allergic to penicillin. I suppose what I am saying or asking is should I just wait it out a bit longer and see how things go or should I mention it to the docs. I also don't really want to have it removed, I am hoping so much this will help with my monthly's they suggested I have this as I was getting them sometimes 3 times a month and it got to the point I could not keep quiet about it anymore and my gp strongly suggested I have it and referred me onto the gyno's which done all the tests they are to do and said yes it would be wise.

Please advise one way or another. Thanks silkyred1.:)

I had mines inserted 9/11 this year. For the first few days I had terrible cramps, much worse than normal but they eventually subsided and despite bleeding/spotting constantly for a month, the only side effect I've had is an outbreak of spots.
Its too soon to make up my mind about it plus I cant bear the thought of having to remember to take my pill each day.

Its funny, I told a few of my female relatives about the mirena and they all screwed up their nose and said 'aren't you too young for that? (Im 21) isnt that what old ladies get?'
Seems to be a lot of misconceptions about this method of birth control........
As far as Im concerned its 1 less thing to worry about for the next 5 years of my life!

Hi, I'm new to posting. I have been reading all the postings on this subject as far back as 2003. I have had the Mirena in since Oct 2005. I noticed that some women noted problems with stomach and IBS symptoms since having the Mirena inserted. Could someone please let me know exactly what their stomach issues have been? I have had severe stomach issues over the past year and they started right after the Mirena was inserted.

My GP, my gyn, and my gastro Drs all have said that it isn't the Mirena that is causing these problems but I'm not so convinced. I never had any stomach problems before the Mirena was inserted and it seems too coincidental that they all started right after the Mirena was inserted for it not to be linked.

I am hoping that my stomach problems are as simple as the Mirena being the reason. Cause if thats the case then I will immediately have it removed. I have been miserable for the past year with stomach pains and lower abdomin/pelvic region pains.

I hope that others have had these issues and that it is not all in my head that I think they are related. Please Help!

Im actually a bit worried.
Its embarrassing but Ive noticed smelly discharge when I go to the loo now and Im thinking I might have an infection, just my luck :(
I phoned the family planning clinic and they told me to call back on monday when there might be some cancellations, but if it is an infection - is it serious considering where it is and, Im probably being overdramatic, but would it affect fertility if there was? Do they just give you antibiotics or remove it completely for good?

As far as stomach problems, I haven't had them after having the IUD inserted, but I did suffer from IBS prior to the IUD. I was on all kinds of meds, but I ended up trying colon-Hydrotherapy (Colonics) and they totally helped. I never felt so good. The pains in my stomach would stop immediately after I had it done. I would look into something like that. It's not as bad as it sounds.

I had the Mirena inserted nearly a year ago (no pain just a slight cramp as it went in) for heavy menstrual bleeding. I've had bleeding almost every day since with the exception of a few days before I went to see my gyno to have it removed and he convinced me to "wait a bit longer" to see if it starts working. I've never had any cramps from it but have had migraines which I never suffered from before and major fluid retention. My thinking is foggy too but I'm not sure if that's related. I called the gyno's receptionist today hoping to get it out, I've had enough of bleeding (even though it's light) for almost every day each month for a whole year, but she said they couldn't fit me in for another 3 months. I'm a bit discouraged here.

How thankful I am to have found this board! I got my Mirena IUD in June of this year. I had one week of really bad cramping, two weeks of spotting and then got my last period on July 4th. From then until the beginning of October I had no major side effects, no spotting and no period but I had major stomach trouble starting in September. In the beginning of October I started having some major PMS, bloating, cramping, irritiability, low back pain (really low) but still no period. Starting the last week of October, I started feeling really tired and the back pain got worse.
I didn't call my doctor as I was just waiting for the period and would feel silly going in only for them to tell me it was PMS. Then two nights ago, I started feeling sharp pain in my lower right side. I ended up going to the ER over the weekend as I thought my IUD had perferated, I had appendicitis, or a entopic pregnancy. They did a sonogram and found nothing (the IUD was in place) so they thought it might be appendicitis. A CT scan showed two cysts, one on each side with no appendicitis. The right cyst was 1.5" in diameter, the other .5".

I'm waiting to talk to my OB/GYN about next steps but I want this IUD out! I've always had perfect health and I've had nothing but discomfort since I had it in save one good month in August feeling perfect. Who knows if I've had cysts in the past as I do have irregular periods (40+ day cycle) since I'm slightly underweight. I'm afraid of the pain in having it removed as it was pretty painful having it inserted.

I would like to go 'au naturel' for a few months to see what my body is really like. I wish I would have seen this board a few months ago when I was researching the IUD. I think I would have reconsidered judging all the trouble people have had. I saw nothing but rave reviews when I looked in the past.:)

I just had mine put in a little less than a week ago but so far no problems. Very little cramping here and there but not enough to have it removed and Im sure my body is just adjusting to having it in there.
