Hi ALL:

I had a ruptured ovarian cyst (I wrote a post about this earlier in the week) and my obgyn is now suggesting I go back on bcp to prevent further cysts from forming and rupturing. I have had my tubes tied already a little over a year ago after having two kids and lots of trouble in between with miscariages etc. I really am leary of going back on the pill as it used to give me lots of side effects such as bad headaches, bloating, weight gain and nausea. My doc assures me that bcp have come a long way these days and that they can try me on differnt types until I find the right one for me. Yikes, who wants to be a guinea pig??? Has anyone had experience with cysts and gone back on bcp??? I am not really wanting to go that route but definately dont want to go through what I went through these past few weeks with this ruptured cyst either.....lots of pain and still a possible DNC looming in the future if my uterus doesnt absorb the excess fluid from the rupture. Help! I have a follow-up appt tomorrow and I guess need to make a decision concerning bcp by than. He swears this is the answer. I am not so sure!

Thanks for any advice,
Beth :)

I know what you mean by not wanting to get back on bcp because of side effects. I'm in the same boat..sort of. I have several cysts on both my ovaries and 1 has recently ruptured. My Doc suggested the pill but we want to get pg so THAT certainly defeats it all huh?!! Cysts are painful but unfortunately the pill DOES help. I had cysts YEARS ago and got on the pill and it helped with the pain. Women who ovulate every month are more at risk for cysts I believe than those to don't b/c of taking bcp.

I wouldn't necessarily say the pill has "come a long way" but there are many more forms and types to chose from now than just the straight one dose of one hormone for 21 days. Triphasic pills tended to make me more moody although they supposedly "mimic" your natural hormone cycle.

Probably didn't help much but if I were you I'd give the bcp a try....

good luck!!

Birth control has come a long way from where it used to be. It is really low dose now compared to what they had way back when. Back then, they just gave major doses of hormones and it worked, but there were tons of side effects. Now, they have figured out that it takes a lot less of the hormones to do the job.

I went on one of the triphasics about six years ago because of a ruptured cyst. I didn't feel the pain, but I had spotting because of it and I didn't like that. I also had a strange nauseated feeling each month during PMS and the doc said the bc would help. I never had another cyst, didn't notice any nasty side effects of the pill, and my PMS was much better two out of three months. Plus, my cycle got longer by about three days and my periods got a little lighter and shorter.

If you have to try more than one pill to get it right, you are not being a guinea pig, you are just learning about your body and what it responds to the best. It's for you, not for anyone else and there are a lot of us who think it is definitely worth it. You might even get the right one the first time like I did. You'll never know unless you try it. There may be some side effects for you, but yuo will have to weigh them against having more cysts and, perhaps, surgeries.
