I am currently considering the Depo Provera injection as a form of birth control. I've heard many horror stories about weight gain and other side effects. Can anyone respond with something positive about it? thanks.

Although I've not personally had a depo shot, i know many women who are extremly pleased with it. Depo is one of the best hassle-free forms of birth control. All you do is get a shot every three months, and you're pregnancy-free. Depo is 99.7% effective, and works very well for many women. The first month, you'll probably experience some weird bleeding. random spotting, and maybe a little period like bleeding, but you won't have a normal period. By the time you have your second shot, your period should disappear all together, and it usually won't show up again for awhile. Some women go years without a period, and some only bleed every six months or so.
there are a lot of great websites that give info on depo if you're interested, just do a google search. Remember that birth control is a personal experience, and every woman reacts different, so don't take all the horror stories to heart.

Sure. I just got the shot for my very 1st time about 3 weeks ago. I have not gained any weight, and even if you ask your doctor s/he will tell you that most people dont gain more than 2 pounds on it, mind you if you work out sometimes, or a lot you shouldn't gain anything! My doctor's only concern which you may think about, is that if you have any side affects to it, you can not get rid of any of them until your 3 months is up. I gotta tell you, there is many "possible" side affects, but there isn't too many people that experience them. I know a lot of people that have gone on the pill instead, and they have had many more side affects, and lots of them had depression and other things and they had to get off it. Depo is very affective, and so far i've not had one side affect. It's a great choice for birth control.

Do a search for Depo on these boards. There are way too many long term nasty side effects that you need to be aware of. I have a friend online who was very ill for a couple of years and was literally not able to function daily, the doctor spent thousands of dollars running tests to try to find out what was wrong. I kept suspecting that Depo might be a part of it and when her hubby finally convinced her to read up on it she was horrified and showed her doc. The doc was so apologetic and said if only she had known what can happen with Depo she would never have prescribed this for a birth control pill. Some women do have good results but there are more women who have nasty long term side effects from it than there are women who have good results from it. Do your research before you ever decide to use for a birth control.
