Hi Im 22 and I have larger Labia and they have recently started bothering me and causeing me discomfort. They get swollen after my period every month and it has happened for 6 month. Only the last 2 month have they started causing me discomfort. I have been to the Gyn 2 times and both told me its normal hormone varations causing it. when I told the one doc that Im having discomfort she told me she thinks its in my head. I also think there are new folds and wrinkles forming. Im thinking of surgery but Im scared and dont want to spend too much money. If I did I just want a Gyn to do it. the last Doc also told me they COULD just stretch back out but she also seemed to be trying very hard to talk me out of it (she did say she would do it). This Doc was kinda harsh with me. will they strech back out??. mine stick out a little over a CM past my Majora I hate them! Its not so much the looks but the discomfort. I think the swelling has stretched them out. Im also worried this swelling is something worse. does anyone know anything? I know Im freaking out but I dont think its all in my head. does anyone else have larger ones that bother them? what would you do?

I've had this problem for as long as I can remember. I know the discomfort is very real and not in your head. The general swelling around mid cycle is caused by hormonal changes related to ovulation. In those of us with larger labia, the problem is much more noticeable. It doesn't sound like your dr. was very sympathetic. You may want to check out the cosmetic surgery board, there are several posts on this topic. Good luck

How much are they swelling and why is it causing you so much discomfort?
I only recently noticed that my labia were larger than average, they stick out from the outer lips and are quite thick but I don't remember them causing much discomfort and I'm sure they've been like that forever. The thing is, once I was more aware of them I started to notice every time they rubbed against my jeans or a pad, and they definitely seemed bigger during and after my period. My mom said it was all in my head and I was noticing it because I was thinking and looking at it all the time. I think thats partly true.

If you are sure there is significant swelling maybe you should ask another doctor? But if they don't find anything wrong you could try to ignore it for a while and see what happens. What do you want the doc to do? Mine definitely wouldn't do an operation for something like that, only if the swelling had a specific cause which needed to be fixed.

Thank you both for the reply
Xiona, I hope you are right that it is something that I have planted in my head. I think about it almost 24/7. Since my last post I went to another Doc. He made me feel much better. Basically He told me yes they are larger but normal and there are lots like that. as far as the swelling it is prolly hormonal like you said Vali and Ive been told that before. Also he told me too look at changes in my life in the past 7 month that could be effecting that area and I guess mabe it could be cause I have a phone job where I sit ALL day and some of my clothes ride up a bit. I dont really wear that tight of clothes. he definatly discouraged surgery. I dont know.. I know they have atleast changed some sinse this whole swelling deal. I just dont want them to get bigger. I want to be patiant and see if I can take it off my mind and stop noticing every rub or move from my pants underwear and pad like you said Xiona. It makes me feel soo much better that you said that. So once you got it off your mind did you feel better?? I guess I will put surgery on the back burner and hope it doesnt have to come up. Thanks!!!

Hi.
You all should go over to the Cosmetic Surgery thread. This subject is being discussed at great length over there.

I have this problem. I never knew what it was called, to be honest I always thought it was some sort of cancer. I've noticed it since my early teens. I'm now in my late teens and am actually really glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem. It's very uncomfortable... especially like said before- wearing pads is the worst. It actually sticks to the pad... ugh, I hate it. I am going to see a gynocologist for the first time in the end of October so I'll surely talk to her about it- never told anyone before since I never new what it really was. I was reading and a ton a places said reduction was for sex purposes, but how about plain old discomfort? I'd love to get rid of it- I hate it. It looks funny, it bothers me and it causes major irritation. I think it's constantly getting slightly bigger. I don't know how to bring up the topic with my mom- so I figured a doctor would be best. I have a ton of medical problems and am always in the doctors office. They don't get too concerned- over new problems. Any advice? I've had it so long- I hate sitting, riding a bike... sometimes standing is even weird. I'm actually realld happy to find out not only is this not some weird cancer but it's fixable.

ok I have a problem too! mine are big as well but I have this big lump in my left labia. I lost my virginity about 2 months ago, and a month ago I saw this fairly big lump in my labia. well I told my boyfriend and he told me not to worry about it and in a few hours it was gone. well just this past wednesday I saw that it had returned. I told my mom and she wont bring me to the hospitol, and I have to wait till friday to go to the GYNO. I am really scared, it had been getting bigger and it looks like there is some kind of fat forming around it. Does anyone know what it is, or had anyone heard of this.... if not does anyone know of a web site wher I can talk to a doctor?! I need help this lump is huge!
