I accidentally burned my leg with a very hot iron two days ago. It turned into a blister and has sinced turned into a scab. ( Sorry for the graphics!) I have treated it with Neosporin and bandaids but it seems toonly make it "ooze" and not heal. Should I just let it "air out" without ointment or bandaids instead? The burn itself is about 2 1/2 inches long abd 1/2 inch wide. It is also staring to hurt very badly. Thanks for any help!

Diva Girl,
I would suggest you have it looked at by a doctor. It could be a second degree burn, which would require special treatment. It's probably not 3rd degree, or you wouldn't feel pain, as the nerve endings would be damaged.
Most burns will ooze somewhat...if the liquid coming out is clear, it's probably not infected, and the neosporin is good to keep it from becoming infected.
I'm not a nurse or a doctor, but I can tell you what I would do, and that would be to keep using the neosporin and keep it LOOSELY covered until it stops oozing...this will keep dirt and germs from getting in to the raw skin. Once it stops oozing and has a good scab, the scab will keep dirt/germs out. The trick here is to cover it very loosely...no tight bandages. Maybe a double layer of gauze layed over it lightly and taped on only two sides with adhesive...make sure some air can get in under the bandage.
Also, you might want to take the bandage off when you're just hanging around the house but not doing any housework (like when you watch TV in the evening, if you do)...that way it'll get some air, which will help it dry out and form a good scab.
Incidentally, next time you burn yourself, immediately run cold water over it...that takes the heat out of a burn and can help prevent it from blistering. Don't use ice, as that can actually do further damage to the skin...just very cold water.
Good luck!

also if you happen to burn yourself again, and you have an aloe plant, as they are common in the south, pinch off a bit of the plant and squeeze the juice out of it and apply it to the burn, works wonders!!!

Thanks Magnolia! I have two aloe plants in my backyard and my mom said to do the same thing! Great advice!

Hi,
Just to add my bid of advice to all the rest. Make sure that when you burn yourself you immediately run the affected area under cold water for a good 5 to 10 mins.
Flamazine cream is very good for preventing scaring and helping healing. You should then cover the affected area with an NAD and bandage.
Take care

Thanks for the tip - do you know where to get that type of cream? Over the counter or perscription? Thanks!

Hi,
The one time I burnt myself severely was when I was working as an RN in a hospital, so I went and got some from the ER. Go talk to your pharmacist and see whether you can get it over the counter, as I'm really not sure, but if not, then I'm sure your doc would be willing to give you a script for it.
Good luck and take care.

Sarah - I called my pharmacy ( Walgreens) and the pharmacist hadn't ever heard of it, either over the counter or by perscription. Do you know if is has a different name or brand name? Thanks!

a few years ago my son had a 2nd degree burn on his arm. I don't know if yours is this bad but this is what I learned. It is important to prevent infection. We were given a white cream called Silverdine (I think)and we applied that every day and changed his gauze dressing every day. He had this done at the Dr's office for the 1st week or so as they had to trim off excess skin etc. (sorry so graphic) Maybe your dr. will presribe some of this stuff for you. It worked great. Hope all goes well.
