I had a plate put in july of 2001. My dr. fixed 5/6 6/7. He said if the other two (3/4 4/5 didnt move then we would be ok to leave them be. I started getting numbness and feeling of being shocked all the time recently. Mostly it was in the right area of my shoulder towards the spinal cord. I went back to my dr. he said it was my fault for not doing my excesises. HELLO I told him I had been doing them. It kills me that these dr.s think we are stupid.anyway My family dr. ordered mri and both my disk have changed and he is sending me to another surgeron. Some of these dr. really play God and they dont care about us. I am thankful for the ones that do care.

Joyann,

Morning,

I think you would find a lot of support and information on the back problems board. I have lumbar problems and I will be going in on Tuesday for another MRI this time for the cervical area. I will be having my 3rd surgery on my lumbar area on June 19, 2002. I would like to hear more about your problem. I am interested because of my up coming MRI.

Hi, sorry to hear about your back problems too. Mine started in 1999. I had lot of pain in right arm and neck. After the mri found that I had actually 2 disk messed up. Really didnt do much for me but PT. Then it didnt help. In 2000 they did another mri and the problem had progressed to 4 disk. 2/3 3/4 4/5 5/6. They still said to watch them and sent me back to PT. In 2001 I was in major pain in both arms couldnt walk without straggering and lost most of muscle in right arm. They then decided to do mylegram and found lots of damage. I had surgery 2001 and they replaced 2 of them with bone from bone bank. I have been in pain since the surgery, it is still bad if not worse. I am facing another surgery soon on the other 2 . I dont have much faith in the dr. but havent a choice as it could permently damage my cord. Hope this hasnt bored u!! I am goin to lexington soon for it. The neck spasms and pain I will have to live with- but its sad I worked all my life and now had to apply to get ss- which case u need to be about dead to get it. Lol its a endless journey... hope yours isnt this rough. GOOD LUCK

Hello,
Keep in mind that the original post was originated back in 2002 and the member who started this thread may not be still on this board. I say that because their last post on this site was back in 2002 also.
I am going to transfer this to the Women's Health board.

I had 5-6 6-7 done from the front in Nov 2002. The surgery was no big deal, the recovery was, 6 weeks in a neck brace, no driving. The swallowing thing only lasts afew days. The first day or so after surgery was a little difficult, but after that it got better. Good luck.

I have what is being referred to as cervical disk disease. I had anterior cervical diskectomy in 2001 with fusion of c5/c6 & c6/c7. I have had pain that just continues to get worse over the past two 1/2 years. I can't believe the level of arm pain that I am experienceing. My doctor ordered a Nerve conduction test with EMG that revealed no nerve impengement. Not sure what is going on! Anyway, he wants to perform a myelogram on me Monday. Have any of you ever had this type of test? This is where the inject die into your spine so that they can take x-rays. I am scared to death of this test as the risks are terrible!
Can anyone help ease my tension?

Thanks!

The mylogram is not the problem. They give you a little needle to numb the area on your lower back, then they give you a big needle (which doesn't hurt at all) to put the fluid in. The problem is you have to stay in an uncomfortable position for what seems like forever (on your stomach, head up to keep the fluid out of your head). Your muscles start ot hurt. Maybe your doctor and nurses will be faster than mine. Good luck.

I am getting ready to face anterior cervical spine fusion on March 4. I am told that the Dr. will be using a synthetic substance instead of bone from the hip, or from the bone bank, and he will be inserting the material between c/5 and c/6 and c/6 and c/7, with a titanium plate. He has not yet told me what to expect in the way of pain and recovery yet, other than hospitalization for 24 hours and to request 3 weeks leave from work. I had a bad fall nearly a year ago and hit my head, which has now left me with constant neck pain when looking down (my neck gets stuck and won't move), numbness and tingling in my left shoulder and significant pain down to my left elbow, and hearing loss in my left ear. Can anyone advise me on what to expect after the surgery as far as recovery. What limitations will be placed on me, such as lifting grandbabies, etc. Thanks.

There won't be any baby lifting for a month or so I'm sure. Neck brace for 6 weeks and no driving for a while. I don't know whether synthetic bone will chhange things, I had doner bone.

Greetings. I also have cervical disk disease. I had the disks between C-4 and C-6 fused with bone bank graft in 2000. After a couple of months of having no speaking voice and 2 more for the singing voice to come back., I was fine.
I couldn't tell that I had major surgery at all :) The doctor had even hidden the scar in the fold of my neck.

I guess the rest of my cervical disks got jealous because I started having problems again 3 moths ago. I had C-6 & C7 fused last week with bone graft plate. My current MRI showed scar tissue at the other fusion site plus a small buldging and possible of bone scar formation with disks above my first fusion.

I used another neurosurgeon because the one I used in 2000 had retired. He said it would be a good idea to wait to worry about C-1 though 4.

The doctor said that us veterans who undergo the procedure a 2nd time, have more pain. He was right! This time the pain is worse and after 9 days it is still painful to swallow; now between my shoulders about 1/4 down my back.

Last time,I had no swallowing problem at all. I hope this gets better soon. have pain even when I take small tiny bites. If it were not for the pain meds, I couln't eat. Anyone have any advice?

I am an associate pastor/music minister and need my voice!!! My neurosurgeon said he put a "stint" in to keep my vocal cords from being permanently damaged and so that my voice would recover faster. He was right again. This time I woke up with a voice but it comes and goes. I am sure that all the hoarsness will go away quicker than last time.

Thus are the adventures of this "professional pain in the neck" :)

I am a music director and my voice is my bread and butter. IN 1998. I had my first fuson surgery for c-4 through 6.It took several months to get my singing voice back. Speaking voice was a bout a month or so. About 6 months after the surgery, I was completly back to normal. No pain, no problems. Felt just like I had never had anything done.

Last May, I had C-6 &7 fused with a metal plate. I wolke up from the surgery WITH all my voice intact. I lost it the next day but just for a week or so. I had my singing voice within a month.

Now, I am still having some minor pain and my arms still get weak and burn when I lift things over my head or direct music. I take a darvocet about an hour before directing music and this helps the pain.

Remember, each person is different and each surgeon has his/her own techniques. What works for one patient might not work for another.

Trust your doctor! If you think you need some ENT advice, this might calm your mind too.
